    Very well done. Finally someone that sings the virtues of having a zoom lens. So many, talk about fixed focal length only. I use a zoom lens because it has much more flexibility. I love the flexibility of the the Olympus 150-400 f/4.5 with 1.25 TC. Can focus as close as 1.3 meters.

      Absolutely! zooms have come a LONG way! super helpful when you are shooting different sized subjects from a fixed location - like a blind. Yes that Olympus zoom covers a lot of ground a great wildlife lens for sure.

      Perhaps using the house as a blind? Before we moved to the new house my bird setups have always been on another piece of land near my home, like a friend's yard, park, or farmer's property. I would often trade pictures for access.

    Heres an idea set up a protable blind from a window in your home to shoot out of, make a cover to fit it etc then setup your bird area 16 ft from it.

  • @JaminTaylor

    One caution about shooting from indoors through a window is that if it's cold outside and warm inside, your'e going to get heat distortion. Best to either get the camera and/or lens far enough out the window to clear the heat waves coming out of the window or bring the temperature down significantly inside.

    • @SteveGettle
      @SteveGettle  Před 3 lety

      Excellent point Jamin! Shooting through those heat waves will soften the image too. I have a friend who found it better to just shoot through a temporary single pane of glass that he would place in the opening when he was photographing and it was cold out.

    Excellent video. I'm keen to know how you handle the ground around the feeders. With the wasted seed and bird droppings, do you have to clean up to avoid things rotting on the ground, I notice you use crushed rock? Are rodents part of the issues you have to deal with?

    • @SteveGettle
      @SteveGettle  Před 3 lety

      That is an excellent question Pat! We feed hulled sunflower seeds. Yes it is a bit more expensive but it eliminates all the mess plus since all the seed is the same they don't dig around looking for a particular seed they just come in grab one and fly off. I think in the end having zero waste and zero mess the added expense is well worth it.

    Great video - full of useful ideas and tips. Are the perches that you showed part of the natural habitat of your yard or have you cut branches (or purchased artificial ones) that you then place in the plamp? I'm just getting started at bird photography and am looking for ideas for perches to liven up the brown leafless limbs (it's still winter) of the trees in my yard.

    • @SteveGettle
      @SteveGettle  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks Robert welcome to bird photography! All of our perches are always real and natural - taken from forest and field. We find them everywhere! whenever we are out in Nature we keep an eye out for something that will make a good perch. We look for berries, vines, lichens, sturdy weeds, virtually anything that will look great with a bird sitting on it. As you gain more experience you will get a better idea of not only what the different birds will sit on but also exactly where they will sit!

    Great video, I have a wooden blind too and I'm having problems fitting camouflage for the window... I was using spy glass but it reports loss in sharpness and light so I'm trying to replace it... Would be great if you can explain a bit more detailed how you fixer the camouflage and the brown mesh sleeves :) Thanks

    • @SteveGettle
      @SteveGettle  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for the interest! I just stapled the camouflaged materials around the opening and then cut a hole for the lens to poke through. It seems to work well and can be easily replaced after a year or two when it gets too worn.
