  • We have all heard stories of guardian angels who are said to attend upon us at the most desperate of times to offer guidance, but there seems to exist a strange contrast to these visitations. For many people who are at their weakest and most vulnerable also report seeing dark entities, whose intentions seem malevolent and sinister. What are these demons on the fringe?

I was an open heart nurse in 1984.I learned to listen to my patients after not believing one who kept freaking out at night, telling me he saw spiders coming out of his TV.I thought he was confused from anesthesia, and narcotics. Then one night, I went to check on him, without turning on the light.I guess it was the movement that caused me to look at the TV, and sure enough, there were spiders all over the TV.I cut on the light, and wheeled the TV out, called maintenance, and they took it apart.Sure enough, it was full of spiders. They think it got infested when it was stored in the basement.I had another patient tell me she saw her dead Mother at the foot of the bed.She passed away that night.Yes, I believed my patients.

When my grandmother was in her last hour she told everyone to take a nap with her and that she would be okay, she had just came back from the hospital that day and everyone was tired so they took her word. My cousin woke up during this hour and she said she saw a shadowy figure near our grandma, She said this figure had been lingering around her house for the last couple days. My cousin was timid but said the figure held no benevolent energy, she had told our grandma about this and all she did was smile. Within the hour our grandma passed on, we believe that this figure was her late husband, he had passed away 4 years earlier, coming to greet her. She passed away at the same age he did at 89, to this day we joke that her husband did not want her to out live him. One night, about a year before she passed she told me about a dream she had: She explained her husband came to her but this time he wasn't a old man but a much younger version of himself, about the same age when they first met, he told her he was building a "house" for her and he would comeback for her when the time was right, during the time she told me this her voice began to break and I could tell she was fighting back tears. They had been together for over 50 years....

We both felt like we already knew each other, and shared similar thoughts, got along beautifully. We have talked about the afterlife similarly, that we will be together again and whomever goes 1st will come for the other. Kinda sad, but reassuring all the same and we believe it.

The first story is similar to what happened to my grandfather at the hospital. He was a cruel, vicious man, who destroyed everything he touched. He was diagnosed with cancer around 2000. At the time he was living with me and my parents. I was three at the time. A few months later he was rushed to the hospital because of sepsis. About a week later he died. When I was in my teens, my mother told me about his last days and they gave me chills. Just like at home he was vindictive to the entire staff that was trying to save his life. He assaulted my mother and another nurse who tried to change his sheets for him, as an example. Well, one night he hit the panic button in his room. Even though he was an asshole, they still wanted to help him. When they got to the room he had said that they were trying to get him, the things under the bed. He described them as black, with multiple different arms reaching for him at once. They told him to calm down and it was just a nightmare, but it became a reoccurring problem. Every night he went through something similar, to the point where the staff thought someone was playing a joke on him as a result of his actions. No evidence was found. He died a few days later from his ailments. My mother was called in urgently to visit him one last time, and to this day, she remembers his face. He had a look of complete horror on his face. The nurse then told my mom about what he had been experiencing his last few days. In my opinion, those demons were just waiting to take his soul to hell.

That’s horrifying. How bad of a person was he? He raised good daughter that had the heart to help him and you seem like a good person. I’m not saying you’re wrong. I believe you. I’m just concerned at how “bad” someone has to be, to find himself in this state. I’m worried it’s not too much. He was an asshole, but did he have a bad upbringing or did his ailments make him difficult?

He was never formally arrested but was detained multiple times in his life due to his erratic behavior. He always had to have revenge for even the slightest mistake or perceived mistake. My grandma was a nurse for elderly patients for more than 40 years and I asked her about her experiencies, she freaked the hell out of me with one Story in particular, back in the early 80's she was working at a red Cross hospital in our country that was located in what had been a women's prision back in the 40's, she said they could hear women cries and cries for help coming from the walls, up to a point where one night they heard a woman singing in the back patio, when she an another nurse went to investigate they found a doctor in the Middle of the patio still, they had to shake him up and after he "woke up" he said he heard the same thing and that he saw a female "patient" in a gown with really long hair and that that was the last thing he remembered... 😱

I work for a hospital transporting patients to and from where they need to be within the network. Last Christmas we were transporting a patient and I was in the back speaking to them and they kept saying they felt drained and kept seeing shadows move. About a quarter of the way into the 50 minute drive, they went into cardiac arrest and we sped up running code 3. We arrived at the nearest hospital that was out of network and the patient had survived. About 4 days later we were transporting them to their original destination within our system and they said "that car cut us off" but they had no way of knowing a car had indeed ran a red light to make a right turn into our direction. They were dead for 2 minutes 40 seconds prior to it happening...

Having undergone heart surgery in my early twenties I can attest to the fact that the drugs they give you post-op are some serious shit. Mostly you're zoned out for the first few days. Some time later, I had a brief vision of a giant fly or a mosquito sitting on top of a tv set. Another time I couldn't get out of bed because I wasn't sure which way the floor was. This doesn't explain why nurses also see things, but I'm not at all surprised that people who are scared and distressed would see dark visions and entities while heavily medicated.

Some may be religious, some may just over-sympathize with the patients in their care that they indulge or share in their delusions? Some may be spiritually inclined to believe without being religious and, or be overworked, sleep-deprived themselves? I mean, it's not a universal phenomenon, not every nurse in the world has claimed to see these things. I've been in hospitals a number of times throughout my life for myself or family members, even been kept bed-ridden (like you, having weird experiences myself, but stuff that could be easily explained by the condition I was in) and this episode of Bedtime Stories is the first I've ever heard of hospital shadow people. Also have had family members go in for serious surgery and kept days for observation and they've never mentioned anything about it.

I worked in the laundry department of a nursing facility in Missouri for four years, and there were two phenomena that members of staff talked about. The first was the Black Dog, a small terrier-like creature that would be seen entering or leaving residents rooms during the night. A number of people even mentioned the sounds of deep growling coming from seemingly nowhere while in a certain room. The second was the Men in Black, three entities that would appear in rooms of certain residents who were near death. They were described as tall, wearing black suites and having only empty sockets instead of eyes, always standing in corners silently observing until that specific resident died. Several employees understandably quit their jobs after encountering these phenomena.

First one was when I was admitted for severe abdominal pain. Was run through the usual tests, and I warned them not to put me on morphine. Was asleep for a good while, but was awakened through whatever pain meds they put me on by someone yelling my name, and telling me to wake up. I wake up in my room, alone, to find an air bubble in my IV line that was over two feet long. Hit the call button as fast as my freshly awake self could!
Years later, as an employee of a nursing home, I would see a shadowy form ducking in and out of the rooms in the basement. Didn’t know it at that time, but the building had originally been the county hospital, built in the late 1890’s.

When my grandmother was dying of cancer the last hour she was alive she kept talking say she was walking up a narrow passageway and there were steep drop offs on both sides. She kept saying the path was getting narrower and narrower but she believed she could make it through. She said there were awful looking snakes and horrible creatures all over the place down the drop offs. Just moments before she died she oh thank god i made it through. She smiled really big and said oh my how beautiful it is here. To anyone that thinks this life is the end they're going to be sadly mistaken. My dad when he was a young boy went to stay all night with his uncle who was blind. His wife had recently passed away and she was his caretaker. She promised him before she died when she was getting ill that she would always come and check on him and take care of him. He told my dad to not be afraid if he seen her that she comes to visit about every night. My dad didn't believe him but sometime in the middle of the night my dad said he heard what sounded like pennies in a jar rattling. He sat up and said he seen her outline in the kitchen doorway as plain as day. He told his uncle and he said yeah thats her. She rattles the pennies to let me know when shes here. There is a hereafter. We will answer to our creator for our actions here on earth.

I saw something like this as a 14 yo kid. I was walking home from a high school choir practice on late spring night, and, in a large gap between street lights, I saw something fairly tall and vaguely humanoidish, a shadow, suddenly emerge from a bush. It was indistinct but it had red glowing eyes. I stopped, surprised and floored. After a couple beats, it seemed to become aware of me, eyes focusing on me. I could somehow feel what it felt, on top of my own terror. I couldn't move. It seemed...mildly surprised and disinterested. After a moment, it faded from view, but I still felt it there. But then I could finally move, even though I was scared. I got the sense that it yanked on me somehow, to get me moving. I then hurried home, and after about a block, I couldn't feel it anymore. It didn't seem malevolent or even benevolent, either. I wasn't in danger, at that time. That is one of the only supernatural things that have happened to me.

@@HaydenLee 2 incidences stick out. The first is concerning dark figures such as the one described in the video and the other is a bit more light hearted. I work as the in house doctor at this home for the elderly. About a year ago one of my patients, Betty (for obvious reasons, no real names are used) became ill. She was already bedridden due to late stage Alzheimer's and developed aspiration pneumonia. I gave a course of antibiotics and she was responding to the treatment. All seemed well until my nurse/assistant who I will call Rue, spotted a dark figure near Betty one night during rounds. It freaked us out as Rue had an open third eye and often saw stuff like this. This was not her first time and dark figures were often not a good sign. A few days later for seemingly no reason, Betty's condition went to hell and we were forced to take her to a hospital. She was in the ICU for a month but she eventually pulled through. The dark figure was nowhere to be seen until around 6 months later. Betty had suffered heart failure and the dark figure was spotted in her room again by Rue.
This second story hits closer to home as unlike the first story where the anomaly was only witnessed by Rue, I witnessed this myself. Around 2 years ago another female patient of mine, Bea had started to physically deteriorate. The family had signed a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) form and all we were doing was making her comfortable in her final moments. One morning as I was entering the compound with Rue (we live near each other and often come to work together) a white dog suddenly appeared and came to us. It was super friendly to the point that I was able to pet it. As soon as the gate was opened to let us in the dog ran rushed inside. We ran after it. The dog had no collar and we were afraid it might bite a resident. The white dog stopped exactly and I mean exactly in front of Bea's window. Bea had one of the nicer rooms in the home and had a window with a view to the garden. The dog stopped right in front of her window and just sat there. We were contemplating on how to get the dog out when a caregiver called us to Bea's room as her vitals had started to deteriorate. Bea stabilized after a bit and when we went back to the garden to see to the dog. It was gone. We searched the compound and nothing. The main gates were locked and the compound walls were 8 feet high. We were genuinely stumped. Dogs can't open gates nor can they jump walls like cats. The mystery of the dog was further compounded by the fact that no white dogs existed near the vicinity. I live in the area, I know it well and I know the neighbours. No one has a pure white dog. The closest was a neighbours husky but it wasn't all white and the mystery dog wasn't a husky. The city where we are located is also very strict when it comes to stray dogs. You will not find an uncollared stray, it would get immediately picked up by the city. A few days after the incident, Bea passed and we kind of forgot about it until when a few months later one of Bea's sons came to pick up some left over belongings and to finish the last of the paper work. I remembered the dog all of a sudden and I decided to ask the son if Bea was a dog lover. The son told us that yes, she loved dogs.

I grew up in a strict Southern Baptist family in the Deep South right in the middle of the Bible Belt. My childhood was filled with Sunday school classes and dramatic sermons about fire and brimstone and the temptations of the weak flesh that Satan was always trying to make you give into. The older generations still forbade dancing, drinking, or anything that might resemble “indecent, godless vices.” But luckily my mother moved my sister and I from rural Mississippi to New Orleans when we were very young. She was a military brat who grew up all around the world. So she believed in acceptance, tolerance, compassion, and love for everyone regardless of race, religion, etc. I’m so thankful for this! She also never made us go to church or pushed any religion on us because she believed that we should find our own faith. So Ive never been deeply religious, but I still have faith in a higher power. Whether it’s God, the universe, or some other unknown divine entity, I choose to believe that we’re not just an accident of nature and there’s something more than this life after we die.
All that being said, I am not so naive as to think that I could possibly know what lies beyond our biological existence, but I do not tempt fate and try to live a good life with kindness and compassion towards others. My grandmother used to always say, “If I die and there’s nothing else or an afterlife, then I wasted my life believing in something that gave me comfort and hope. If I die after never believing in anything, and I am taken to a place of suffering and pain, then I wasted an entire eternity.”

I’ve been a nurse in open heart surgery for almost 6 years now, and the hospital I work at was opened in the 1800’s. One night I was floated to the oldest functioning part of the hospital and around 2:30am I found myself alone in the nurse’s station. I looked up from my charting and saw in the window a reflection of a 60-something heavier woman staring from the other side of the station back at me. I jumped up and turned around thinking a patient had gotten up, but when I turned around nobody was there. I ran out and looked all over the hallway, no unaccounted patient was to be seen. Everyone on our wing was still hooked up to every heart monitor, so nobody could have gotten up without us knowing. After a minute I realized there wasn’t even a single patient on the whole floor that matched her description, yet 2 hours later a nurse in the north wing saw her too. The old building was full of ghosts especially those of children who died of TB during the outbreak of the 19th century. I hate going anywhere alone there. Night shift is a$s

It's interesting to think about what psychological phenomena might lead to this. Definitely, I think the guy with the heart attack was getting subconscious warnings of danger from his body. Also, I think it makes sense we all see similar things, since humankind does have shared experiences that go very far back, and also our brains interpret things in similar ways.

I can only believe that the Holy Trinity had something to do with it.

He said to me they are turning of the machines which were assigned to each patient. . I tried to tell him it must be mediation causing it. He said he can see them and they disappear into the walls. He told me they were all grey and seem to float and not walk. My husband doesn't believe in anything. But to this day he says they were definitely there. He hardly slept as he said he had to make sure they don't turn off his machine. He rang me every night telling me about all this. I’ve had two brain surgeries, and the first one I had a hematoma where I experienced such immense pain that I can barely remember the events that transpired in that week. They put me on a Dilauded pump and that drug was just way too strong, like it made my body and mind feel like I was in outer space. I could feel absolutely nothing, which scared the crap out of me, and then after a little while, I got the worst side effect that I’ve ever experienced - my body felt like there was bugs crawling right underneath the skin. That was honestly one of the worst feelings ever and I can still picture that feeling today. However, I did not have any experiences where I saw anything like that, and I’m honestly quite glad I didn’t, as I feel that would’ve permanently messed me up quite a bit. I can’t imagine seeing those figures moving around and interacting with you or other people. Incredible post Bedtime Stories!

My mother worked hospice as a social worker for nearly a decade. During that time she told me there were several patterns that she eventually started noticing. The main ones were that when people were getting close to passing they would begin seeing their friends and family come to visit them. Often times the elderly or the dying would begin talking about going on a trip or just going somewhere. And they would talk about needing to pack their bags and things like that. Shortly after they would pass away peacefully. She also said in the entire time she worked hospice she only saw two people who did not pass away peacefully.
She said that they were both afraid and that both had horrified looks on their faces.
One of them died screaming and since she didn't mention it I assume the other man was silent. But she said she wasn't able to find a pattern in who got to have a good death and who had a horrific one. She said even people who were bad, maybe not evil but definitely unfriendly humans and definitely not religious would seem to have their family come get them and a would have a peaceful passing. So who knows what those other two people did to received the bad death. It's kind of scary when you think about it.

Interesting stuff. My father died when I was 4, but shortly before his death my mother said he saw something in the room with him - but he wasn't sure what it was, he said it may have been angel, he didn't seem to be scared. My grandmother before her death was riddled with Alzheimer's and dementia, so she could not talk. But my mother, who was with her shortly before death as well, said that she was watching something moving back and forth in her bedroom. My grandmother had a angry look on her face as she watched it. Demonic? Or perhaps just a mental issue because of her condition? Creepy stuff...

The only creepy things I've encountered when working in hospital was on a night shift.
I was at the nurses station when I heard a noise at the far end of the dark corridor. I had to go and see what it was. We have cupboards on wheels, that hold the clean linen. Well at one of the cupboards, I saw a dark figure slithering out of it and onto the floor. I was instantly spooked until I realised that it was one of the patients with dementia who had gotten up to use the toilet and become very confused, lol.
Another night shift, again I'm at the nurses station. The room opposite contained 4 patients. I went in to check on them at 3am only to find that one of them had vanished. I went back out to ask the other staff about the missing patient and everyone confirmed that they hadn't seen them leaving the room. We all went in to look for him and found hiding in a very small space between 2 curtains and he was just standing there saying nothing. That spooked all of the staff, lol.

My grandpa experienced similar after a surgery. I was staying with him in his hospital room and he was seeing all kinds of weird things. Dark figures, human sized spiders and tigers. Definitely believed it was the drugs.

Have I ever thanked you for having these stories' visuals appear almost entirely in black and white? I grew up watching old b&w horror movies on TV and there is a menacing quality to the lack of color, increased shadows, etc. that I appreciate. Thank you!

Now, of course this is not an explanation, just a wild guess, but I think it comes down to whether or not people have made their peace with their demise. My late dad was stabbed in the back as a young man in the 1960's, and he would tell how he saw the grim reaper galloping towards him menacingly on a white horse.
My grandma was in her 90's when her mind became detached from the real world. She would often speak to her sisters that died before her and sing with them under her breath. She just fell asleep one day, feeling safe and sound.
If death is approached with fear, the brain will show you things to be scared of.

Hospital induced delirium, especially post-op, in older adults, and during long hospital stays, is a very real recognized thing. Between the physical trauma of surgery, the medication, the disturbance of sleep cycles, isolation, it can make the brain react in pretty distressing ways: hallucinations, nightmares, confusion, mania, depression, anxiety... A lot of people aren't ready for it and don't expect to be so intensely psychologically affected, but it's not uncommon.

I remember when I had Sleep Paralysis for the first time. The only time I had. back in 2011.
I felt a dark figure laying on top of me and whispering ( I couldn't understand what it was). I was horrified and awake the entire time. It lasted about 40 seconds.
I couldn't sleep afterwards as I felt a weird feeling someone was there. I waited till morning to tell someone about it.
Me and my dad used to work in the same restaurant and as soon as I got there, I told him about my experience. He just told me to pray and relax...
3 hours later, My dad gets a call from my mom, saying his dad ( my grandpa) had passed away.
Man... I felt so bad telling him my experience after that... still thinking if it was a coincidence or not.
