Those who don't live with RLS will never know the level of discomfort. The name is misleading, and it can't be described with words. I'd rather deal with nausea and pain. When you experience it in both your arms and legs with very little help, sympathy, or understanding, it ain't nothing nice. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I'm afraid to lay down and to sleep because the next six to eight hours are likely to be excruciating. RLS family, I'm in discomfort with you. You're not alone.

I've been suffering with this all my adult life, (I'm 61), and one of the things that has often given me instant relief is laying in certain positions. One position is like the yoga "child" position - legs folded up underneath you when facing down, (I use a little pillow to support my head). The other position is laying on my tummy almost like in recovery position. Sometimes the relief is immediate, maybe only for half an hour but even that is blissful after the constant sleep disruption. I have also been taking gentle iron for years with, initially, huge success but I now take more of it and get less and less success, and of course, you have to be careful not to overdose on iron. Overall, I live my life with a constant headache through lack of sleep; every other aspect is healthy, I keep exercised and fit, eat a good diet, don't smoke or drink, cope fairly well with other stresses, but the lack of sleep is the one thing that messes up my health.

Please try magnesium! When I first had symptoms of RLS it felt like snakes or bugs crawling up and down my legs, mostly at night. After putting up with it for a while I finally went to my local health food store, spoke with the nutritionist and immediately she recommended Magnesium. IT WORKS! RLS forces you to move your legs, modulating the sensations associated with RLS. Most common are tingling, aching, shooting pain, itch you can’t scratch, pins and needles, cold or hot feeling...
So when you move your legs, it goes away for about 5-10 seconds.
From personal experience: magnesium pills, iron, heating/cooling pads, sleeping potions, compression, massages....help.
Some outside help will be exercising, decrease coffee intake, physical therapy etc.
But the most common theory is iron deficiency

It typically occurs at the nap hour, and if you are in an environment whereby the room conserves heat too well, then the best approach is adapting a before nap time workout ethic routine of your choice for an hour and also remember to keep the dry air out during the summer the best way you know how or winter time using the thermo control with the "fan" control setting on "auto" fan setting simultaneously and not "on". Dry fan air will dissipate at auto setting, and it's good for the lungs when you do your work out in your room at night and before bed. That's my conclusion and cure after 38+ years, too. It is the average age experience I've noticed. Human evolution wasn't meant for energy saving high-tech rooms, which trap dry air in rather to the contrary outdoor experience. Who even gets cured off of restless leg syndrome on a couch rather than outdoors doing stuff and then napping in the forest somewhere. I am serious about this. It's a cure on my behalf in every season of the year and counting. My time for a workout is at the midnightght mark to 1am. It is too cold outside to open windows and dangerous too. unpredictable too if you live with your loved ones.

Most of the medication no longer works and I spend my nights moving from a bed to the sofa, sofa to kneeling on the floor, walking and then laying on a hard floor. If I get three to four hours of sleep each night I am lucky. This disease runs in families with my elder brother, niece, nephew and sister all suffering to various degrees. The majority of doctors do not take it seriously, most believe it is a psychological problem and some just dismiss it out of hand. Apart from moving around, I fill my nights doing chores or anything that moves me around.

Look into food intolerance. You could potentially have food sensitivities that deplete you of certain nutrients. Gluten being a big one.
I have this and it came on by taking antidepressants, a whole variety of them. I cold turkey myself off of them.
I was given meripix for RL for 15 years. It worked at first but eventually made it worse. I weaned of that using Zeolite. That helped a lot, everytime I felt them coming on I would take heaping teaspoon of zeolite in water and with in minutes they would go away. Didnt need the medication anymore.
Then I discovered that potassium really helped. We need 4500 mg per day and majority of people don't get near that. I also added large doses of b1, bentiamine, that is really doing something too. I believe RS has something to do with sugar and metabolism. If you notice eating high sugar foods will bring them on.
So nice to feel relaxed now, and I'm sure potassium really helped with that. As potassium helps with sugar metabolism.
Hope this helps you, RL are horrid.

I have sever restless leg syndrome, I had it as a child. My mother and my father suffer also. Im ADHD and have been all my life, it got worse in my late thirties. ALTHOUGH I had this a a child. I’m also iron deficiency, I have thalassemia minor, and I’m sure I need more B12. I don’t sleep at nigh, I’m miserable! I was sent to a “quack,” psychologist, and was told I have OCD, and I am bipolar. Not getting enough sleep is emotional straining .. But Bipolar probably can’t be diagnosed in a ten min session. Im not educated on the subject, but common sense must come in to play here at some point. I’m not a Doctor but I have done quite well on common sense . Gabipintin is something I haven’t tried but ambian is something I have and I thought it worked most of the time. but supposedly it’s like crack on the street and not given out anymore. I’ve now been going on three years with very little sleep. Im sure the quack would have me committed to a new government mental health hospital and in a straight jacket on who knows what medicine and pissing in diapers. I choose to newer enter that place again.. I’ve had to quit work so I can’t get some sleep. I feel electricity is moving through my leg and it travels to my arms. I find walking around at night calms it down in me. but doesn’t help on the sleep side. Believe me I have completed about this for years with all kinds of Doctors. Yes I’m probably a bit crazy by day four without sleep. Do you know of a Doctor in the Dallas are that’s well versed on this? I would be so great-full. God bless ,

Gut brain connection is very important (a lot of RLS patients have IBS), your cholesterol and insulin levels are crucial for you brain as well. The diet should fix all these to correct levels. Make sure you have enough magnesium (most people are deficient) and that it’s balanced out with your salt intake (book: The Salt Fix). I have had RLS since my late twenties, am now 68, and have been taking 5 - 10 mgs of Methadone at bedtime since 2016. This has been the biggest help. That may be true for some people, but certainly not for me. I have had restless leg for as long as I can remember even as a tiny child. I wiggled and squirmed and kicked all night long. I was 30 years old when my daughter was born by C-section. My legs began to bother me on the table. I told the anesthesiologist that I had to move my legs, he informed me that I could not they were stitching me up. He then said he was going to give me a little more anesthesia and put me to sleep, so that I would not have the problem. As soon as he put me under my legs broke through the anesthesia , and went crazy. They had to hold me on the table and strap me down so they could finish stitching me up.. I was in my 40s when I learned that other people had this problem, and it had a name. A friend finally told me that they had a prescription for Pramipexole. That medication has been a lifesaver for me. It mostly keeps it under control. I take it around dinner time, and then another one just before I go to bed.

64 RLS my entire life. As a child they told me it was mental. It’s not
Mild symptoms early age and only in my left foot. That has progressed to currently both legs my left arm and chest. Although I do get the symptoms occasionally in the day it’s primarily at night. Every night.
I could sit here and write a book on what I’ve tried. What works for me and what doesn’t It would take forever so I’ll just list what has worked for me to help me get by the last few years
      Very hot showers at night
When it hits at night don’t stay in bed. Get out walk around the house Move your arms. Lean on a table or counter and do push-ups Any thing that strains your muscles
Kratom powder. It’s controversial but it works for me. Do your research. If you do decide you want to try it make sure it’s the highest quality from a reputable vendor. Lab tested so there is no impurities
That helped me keep the symptoms down enough so I could sleep. Same as any drug you may take. This will eventually won’t work so my new approach is showing actual decreased symptoms
Do not eat anything at least 3 to 4 hours before bed. It is hard to do but it is working for me
I am currently eliminating most if not all carbohydrates from my diet and my symptoms are again decreasing. Still there but way less intense. I really just started this and I’m excited. I don’t know the science but I am certain there is a direct correlation between RLS and sugar. I went against my own advice and had a small bowl of ice cream last week around 7 pm. By 745 it was like aliens were invading all my RLS hot spots at once. I immediately went outside and walked for about 30 minutes and it gradually went away. Proved to me food has a lot to do with this. Bread had the same effect
Now I’m doing my own version of keto. Feel better than I have for years Currently doing intermittent fasting my window that works is 2-6 Don’t be afraid of fat. I’ve lost a lot of weight eating healthy fat. Sugar is the enemy.
Learn the difference between heme and non-heme iron. Don’t just pop in some iron supplement s. Most non heme iron is not absorbed
If you eat nuts. Try eating only sprouted. I like pecans. I’ve found that normal organic or conventional roasted or raw bring on slight RLS symptoms but sprouted does not. Why. No idea
Just wanted to share my journey and what works for me. I hope someone reads this and finds some comfort and relief from this horrible disease as I did. Again it’s not totally gone but I’m confident I’m on to something. Good luck

@@Wizwiz2112 your comprehensive comment is so beautiful, thanx for your heart and taking the time to contribute to lessening this nightmare. I have been dealing with this for decades. The past year IU purchased 3 Purewave massagers, They are cordless I keep them charged up to be sure I have one that works every night. I use it every time I wake up restless I do my neck, back, hips, legs, shoulders and end with hands and feet. Hands/feet have acupuncture points that affect the entire body. What massager does is dissipate or redistribute the electrical currents and I think it confuses the pattern, albeit temporarily but at least I can fall back asleep. I notice that a lot of emotional grief is a component of this dilemma so I allow myself to cry and feel sorry for all the hurts of my life. I release whatever suffering comes up. I pray and ask for help also. I write this here to add to your comprehensive list, and also I will be going back to the bar of soap which at one time helped, either via the power of suggestion or some actual component in the bar of soap. I share elsewhere her that I put it in a sock and tie around my ankle. I know it sounds bizarre but so is this illness. I wonder if electrical current from our devices aggravates it because it seemed to get worse when they installed smart meters at my house. Blessings!
