@@Veritas-dq2hs yeah. and a stargazer's face isn't squished inward like a pug's, it's features were just rotated towards the top of its head, where they were most useful for its hunting strategy. if you look at a pug skull vs. that of a stargazer it makes the distinction obvious.

As a DK spearfisher, we have several fish that knows that trick, but once you've cracked the code, you can sort of ID the fish by looking at the pattern they leave in the sand when they bury- Rhomboid = Plaice, Flounder, Dab. Round = Turbot, Brill. Elongated oval = Sole, Lemon Sole. "Slash in the sand" = Greater Weaver. I can only imagine something similar is relevant for the Stargazer.
The reason it’s eyes bulge out at the top of the forehead is so they can see unsuspecting prey swim above them, to which they will pounce out of the sand and snatch the fish with that huge mouth. I remember seeing this fish in a documentary when I was about 10 years old and I always seemed to remember it the most.

Everyone is saying how the face looks scary when it emerges out of the sand, but it looks kinda cute ngl. Kind of a derpy Looking face imo.
