  • Today we're looking at oddly familiar places a lot of us have seen in our dreams. Liminal Spaces by definition are locations that serve as a transition between other locations, time periods, or states of mind. These are places that North American 90s and 2000s kids are very receptive too, as there is not a lot that is unique about our upbringings. Our brains map it out, our dreams do the rest. This has become a bit of a trend because people are hungry for that abandoned feeling of time lost.

This makes me think of a few years ago, when I went on a lantern-making course. It was in a public hall, but the only bathrooms were down the corridor - the corridor that belonged to an abandoned old school. It was so creepy, with like boarded up locked doors down a long hallway, and broken chairs that hadn't been touched for years. I was freaked out XD

A few years ago, I was in a shopping centre and I was changing in one of the stalls. The lights suddenly went out and I got quite scared. There was only a few lights here and then. I didn't realise until a few minuets after that it was closed and I was there without anyone. I started freaking out and my anxiety kicked in. For like 2-3 hours I sat in a corner and just cried because I didn't know what to do (I was quite young). Finally one of the security guards found me and I kept crying because I thought I was going to go to prison but I explained and he was really kind about it. My phone had died so he called my parents for me and he is literally my saviour. I thought I was going to die. My mental health was really bad at the time and I felt traumatised for ages. Luckily my mental health got better a while after. I'm still not 100% but I'm so grateful for that security guard finding me.

I feel like watching Gloom go on and on about how these dark uninviting places really terrify her reminds me of when I’m talking about my fear of clowns. I know she’s talking about these places so familiar to us that seeing them empty puts us in a weird limbo, but seeing her describe how unsettling it is sounds like my rambling over how irrationally and weirdly clowns scare me. I hadn’t remembered my fear of clowns in 5 years until I watched the movie IT and it just left me in this unsettling feeling for even months after watching it. I’m still terrified of clowns 💃

  • @UrFriendlyNeighborhoodWeirdo

Sometimes, my nightmares start outside or deep inside an infinite, dark, forest at night. Outside there is a road and flower boxes, but once you enter I can not escape. When I am in the forest, I do impossible and strange problems, but there is always something about them that is so scary or unnerving. When I fail these problems sometimes I fall into darkness and see abstract shapes, colors, and people. I wake up feeling scared.

On the topic of eerie pools, irl, my family and I went to some cabin in the mountains for a couple days. There was an indoor pool there, so we decided to check it out. The water was really green as compared to normal chlorine water and the walls/ceiling seemed extremely old. It was quite creepy in there especially because *whenever me and my brother would laugh, the sound would echo throughout the small room.* I didn’t think it was creepy at the time, but looking back at it, it perfectly fits the description of feeling like being stuck in limbo.

Maybe this is just me, but every time Kassie went off about how these certain things make her feel so alone, I'm sitting here wanting to go there. Like not the abandoned hospital, that's creepy no matter how you spin it. But like, an empty school, driving at night, empty swimming pool. Being in an empty school hallway makes me feel very serene and I just love the feeling of it. Driving at night, though I don't yet have my license (soon) I know I will adore because being alone in a dark place just makes me feel alive. Empty swimming pool, I WANT THAT. Just a whole swimming pool to myself, like please. I don't know, I've gotten super into swinging over quarantine, I can (and will) swing the entire day away and recently with it getting so dark so quick, it made me realize just how nice it is once it gets dark. Makes me really wanna go to the park at midnight with no light except the park's, no soul around 'cept mine. Seems so relaxing.
(Okay I got into it, tl;dr empty places at night are serene to me.)

The examples he gave of dreamcore vs weirdcore gave a bit of the wrong idea, they're actually very similar even when you search them, in the end dreamcore is supposed to give this unsettling, dream like experience, almost nostalgic and weirdcore a unsettling experience, like something is very wrong, they often picture things like eyes, mouths or just hazy, nostalgic and directed at the reader phrases. Both end up being very similar because dreamcore turns into unsettling dreams or dreamy like spaces and weirdcore takes from those dreams to find unsettling elements.

    Two stories.
    One, “the powers out.”
Two, “moving into an empty space.”
One: On a nice, calm Friday, I was sitting in class, learning science. Science is my all time favorite subject. I was taking notes, and then, the lights shut off. Someone screamed from down the dark hallway. People stood up and attempted to turn the lights on. Our teacher, Mrs. P, told us to sit down and that the power went out. It was 3:05 PM, so we packed up and headed out for recess. The hallways were dark, empty, and echoing with chatter. Purple lights dimly lit the halls. Kids were scared (were in fifth grade, so it’s fine) and teachers just wanted us to be quiet. The hallways felt empty until we came across a window. Our class was the only one out there. A group of girls bunched together. As others feared the worst, I listened to people panicking in the other rooms, and thought about their perspective. They saw the lights go out. They’re scared. They’re panicking. And I’m here. Walking down a dark hallway with my class. And I’m not worried about a thing.
Two: My parents had finally found a house to move into. I was excited, as I had seen the house and there was a play set in the backyard. I was in third grade. I didn’t know this would be the house I’d spend all my time in. I first walked in the house. Long-ish hallway to the kitchen, stairs on the side, and a living room right across the stairs. I walked into the living room. There was a fireplace and a fold-up chair. It was empty, dark, and lonely. I went to the dining room. But there was nothing. It was dark and desolate. I felt isolated. The kitchen, I walked to. There were counters, an oven, and an island. Empty. I walked into the room in the garages place (we call it the listening room, because we listen to music in there.) and there were many white shelves. Places to sit, but they weren’t chairs. They were short walls and you could sit on them. I felt.. lonely. It was quiet, and my footsteps echoed loudly as I walked to the large window. Seeing it was getting late, I decided to look upstairs and then go out to the backyard. I walked up the steps. Thud, thud, thud. My hand grazed the rail. I was met with a hall closet, empty and small. Next to me was my brothers bedroom and a bathroom. In my brothers bedroom, it was empty , with flowers on the walls painted from the previous owners. The restroom held a sink, toilet, and bath. Nothing else. Next to it, my fathers room. I looked in there. There were railroads on the walls that my mother was painting purple. I took a second to play on my iPad in there with her, figuring the house was so empty, I might as well spend time with my mom. Then I looked at my room. The walls were pinkish orange and there were two windows. There was a closet which led me to the attic, which I didn’t dare to look at. I rushed out and headed down the hall to my moms room. The ceiling was elevated. The room was only lit by windows. It was huge. I rolled on the empty carpet for a little and headed into her restroom. It was large. A bathtub sat in front of me. And next to me, a sink. I walked through a door near the tub and was met with the toilet. I had seen the whole house, so now I went back downstairs and called to my mother that I’d be outside. I put my blue hoodie on since it was cold out, grabbed my iPad, and headed out the back door. It wasn’t dark, but wasn’t light. I walked to the play set. Crunch, crunch, the grass under me. A bunny scattered away. Tip tap. I sat down on a swing, there were two next to me, and placed my ipad on the one to my right. I turned on music and swung for an hour before heading back inside since my friends wanted to call me. My house has changed since then.

This once happened to me, and it happened three times in a row in one night, it has horrible, I dunno why I kept waking up three times in a row, but all I know, I probably somehow got a nightmare. And I told my mom about it and she hugged me and said “I hope your okay.” I don’t know WHY about it felt so off and made me feel like a dream again when it is actually reality.

I work night shifts often so isolation and empty rooms are just commonplace to me, so it’s interesting seeing how uneasy others get by it.
Whats also funny to me is that I see an empty place as a paradise. An empty building means I don’t have to worry about people. But for others is frightening.

When I was in high school, for cross country running practices in the morning when it was too cold outside, we would run in the hallways in our school with the lights off before school started. The hallways were so long, and it was scary and thrilling. It was weird being in such a familiar place. I could see the windows at the end of the dark hallways but not what was in the middle of the hallways. I lived in a small town so it was only like 15-20 of us running miles inside the school, and it was such a bizarre thing to experience.

The staircase felt like it was going on forever, but it didn't, obviously. Felt like I was in a horror movie. Really enjoyed the video! Interesting concept.

Now, something I have learned about liminal spaces, is that you don’t know where you are, yet it is vaguely familiar when you look or glimpse at it. But when you start to imagine where you have seen it, it gets worse if you don’t know. I have seen many liminal spaces, and they all seem familiar, but if I remember what it looks like, I calm down and imagine the people I had seen, but, if I can’t remember, I start to panic because you can’t imagine the people being there, cause you don’t remember who you saw there or what the people there would have been like. Like when I saw a colorful area, it kinda looked like a doctors office I used to go to. So I imagined doctors and random people, even though I couldn’t see their faces, them being there helped me calm down. But I have seem vaguely familiar places and haven’t remembered where it looked like, where I’d seen it, or who was there. So I had troubles imagining the people, and couldn’t calm down cause I was alone, without signs of people.

It's interesting seeing how unnerved people get by these images. There's definitely something creepy about a lot of them but only one or two felt familiar because I didn't quite live a normal life if that makes any sense. I don't feel like I've been to these places or can relate because I haven't and so I can't. I was born 2003 so the McDonald's is automatically off my list lol but also I never lived in the suburbs or been alone at school in the evening so everything is more so creepy in a horror movie way than in a relatable way.

these are the kind of things that make me genuinely believe we’re living in a simulation. there’s a professor and scientist that works at oxford who confirmed there is a solid 50/50 chance we’re living in a simulation. but seriously what else explains how for some reason we all feel like we’ve been to these places. of course, deja vu is on the table, but like just the feeling of familiarity even though none of us have vivid memories of being in those exact places scares me.

(i saw a glitch like thing but now j know it’s bc my vitamin levels r low, and sometimes i feel like i see and hear things that prove it’s a simulation and it causes panic attacks.) but what helps is telling myself, “hey, you can see the rain on the car window, you can feel the cold touch, you can listen to the radio music, you can smell the rain and fresh earth after a storm. you can smell fresh cookies, you can hear birds chirping in the morning, you can see rainbows and touch the flowers, touch others and feel their skin, touch the cozy blanket.” which proves to me it’s real :)
