On March 23rd, 1993, Hoshi no Kirby: Yume no Izumi no Monogatari, was released for the Nintendo Family Computer in Japan. A few months later the game went abroad as Kirby’s Adventure. Nearly three years after the Super Famicom had been released, many were surprised that such an impressive game could be made on such an old piece of hardware, and that anyone would bother doing such a thing at all, rather than going the 16-bit route.
At the end of 1990, with the 16-Bit Era in full swing, it seemed like the days of the Family Computer were numbered. Though the FC hung in there, doing so defied the odds, as Nintendo never expected the machine to make it to 3 years, let alone 10.
In 1990, Japanese game publisher, HAL Laboratory recruited a young graduate named Masahiro Sakurai. Having never created a video game before, he played around with the tools HAL had provided, including a makeshift toolkit built from a Family Computer and Disk System. Masahiro eventually created a peculiar game starring a floaty puffball, who could inhale enemies and use them as projectiles. He could also fly by inhaling the air around him. This offered a challenge, as while in flight, the character’s method of attack drops you to the ground. The choice of fight or flight offered a unique spin on the standard run and jump type of game common in those days.
Sakurai named this character Popopo, which sounds like the flutter noise he makes when flying. Popopo was initially designed as a simple placeholder character until something more sophisticated would replace him. Over time, Sakurai and the team at HAL grew to like the design. Popopo became permanent.
The game, titled Twinkle Popo was previewed and advertised across Japan, in early 1992. The response was disheartening as only 26,000 cartridges were pre-ordered from stores. Far less than what was required to break even.
HAL Laboratory reached out to Nintendo to publish the game, which led to Popopo being renamed to Kirby. Twinkle Popo was retitled to “Hoshi no Kirby” meaning in English, Kirby of the stars. Nintendo released the game on April 27th, 1992, backed with all of the resources Nintendo had at its disposal.
While the initial reception of Twinkle Popo was quite cold, Hoshi no Kirby became the #1 best game in Japan in May 1992, By the end of the year, the game had sold over one million copies in Japan, while also being released elsewhere in the world as Kirby’s Dream Land. Lifetime sales would exceed five million.
Kirby’s rocket ride to the top prompted immediate talk of expanding the Dream Land into a long running, proper series. With backing from Nintendo, not only was that possible, but now, for Sakurai and HAL Laboratory, the sky was the limit!

For a while, my sister, and I kept our NES. As her, and I slowly were playing our SNES more, and our NES significantly less, we eventually donated our NES. Less than a decade later, I received an NES-2 as a Christmas present. Funcoland, which became GameStop, made building up a small collection of NES titles, quite fun, while not really being expensive. It was more like, "Oh, I have pocket change from purchasing groceries, or whatever. I think I'll stop to Funcoland, see what they have." I still have, and play regularly, my NES-2.
I was born just before the dawn of the SNES, and with a limited library of new games, I was more than happy to go through the NES's backlog thanks to my parents' NES and the local rental store's selection. The only games I found myself renting time and again were SMB2 and, of course, Kirby's Adventure, my favorite on the whole console!
I was the kid lucky 🍀 enough to have an NES, Gameboy, Genesis & SNES all at the same time by the Summer of 1993.
My first videogame was a NES clone in 1992. So the influx of high quality NES games in the early 90's was a blessing, since at the time a SNES was out of financial range. With time, a SNES and a N64 came home, but the NES bug stayed with me long enough that, as a young adult I bought a (used) original NES manufactured here in Brazil.
Too bad I didn't had the foresight nor the money, to buy games that local gamestores were selling dirt cheap, to make space for CD games of a console Sony was introducing at the time.
The NES was where it all began for me, got my NES with SMB and Duck Hunt on my 5th birthday. I remember using the cool tricks from watching people play SMB in the arcade game at the local pizza shop and it was awesome!
We once found a copy of Blade of Steel behind a building buried under carpet that was in the middle of nowhere, and the game actually worked when we tried it later that day.
To this day I have a friend who can recite the code in Mike Tyson's Punch Out to go directly to the final fight.
Towards the 90's I did not get a SNES upon release so I still played a lot of NES. I still love doing the same thing you mentioned and booting up some Kirby's Adventure to show others just how amazing the peak of the 8-bit era reached, and it truly was monumental.

This game was the root of my Kirby Fan-ism. I played this game with my brother taking turns heaps back on the classic NES. This is where my love from Nintendo stemmed from and I still love playing this today. Wether it’s the 3D version or the remake; Kirby’s adventure is phenomenal.

I stayed with my NES for 16 years before selling it. But I never added many games into my collection since NES games were hard to find back then. But thanks to the internet, I was able to play many classics like Kirby Adventure.

Back in 1993 I visited my cousin who showed Kirby's Dream Land on her Game Boy. I was only gonna play it for a couple of minutes but got so addicted to it that I finished the whole game in one playthrough (and drained the batteries during the end credits).
Later I went to a Walmart and saw a promo video for Kirby's Adventure. Now I knew I had to play that so I rented it when I got home...and beat the whole game during the weekend.
This game and Mega Man 6 were the last hurrah of the NES...
There was a commercial for the NES-2, that featured MegaMan 6. "Battle,... Evil Robots!" Apparently, the commercial wasn't intended to give people a better synopsis.

Funnily enough, Good Feel was already making Epic Yarn before Nintendo approached them and gave them the idea of making it a Kirby game. So the resemblance is one of the biggest coincidences ever. Wonder if the Nintendo side of its development was influenced by the Kirby’s Adventure ad
I was one of the "stick with NES" kids during the 16-bit migration (grew up poor so it's not like it was completely by choice haha). One good part about that though was it gave me a whole library of old games to play and usually cheaper becuase they were old. I was playing the original Final Fantasy on NES for the first time, _after_ playing FFIV at my neighour's house. I remember being really happy during those days because they were still releasing new NES games for us on the lost technology of the ancient past, and Kirby in particular was one of my favorites. /end wall of text

I got the NES when my aunt (then in her teens) got the SNES so it was handed down to me with a stack of games. Good memories.

Man, that was the best retrospective on Kirby's Adventure I've seen. Excellent on all fronts. I really appreciate the efforts you usually take on detailing the reception the games had on different regions. You always at least mention Club Nintendo, which was a very important publication here, in South America. Kirby's Adventure is my favorite Kirby game of all time. The same happens with Super Mario Bros. 3. To me, Super Mario Bros. 3 on the NES is the greatest 2D Mario game ever. Some late era NES and Famicom games gave early 16 bits games (and even some released later) a run for their money. A great, great video. I sincerely feel your channel deserves a lot more subs and views.
Ever since interacting with so many from Mexico and South America I always like to include CN because the fan base there was just as dedicated there. Also a lot of people say “North American” release to mean the US and Canada but ignore that the south of the US got most of the same games at the same time, at least since Gus started running things!⭐️
Unfortunately to me, I am a SNES player as first experience in gaming, back in the day. Son of the early 80's I jump over that NES age, but I admit and admire the quality of those old and golden games. Kirby really is an example case of how a game can show what an allegedly "obsolete system" still have some fire within.

I remember the commercial for Thai game playing nonstop during breaks on Thanksgiving 1993 cartoons on WPIX NY before it became. WB affiliate. I was a Sega kid at the time but this left an impression. I didn’t get Kirby’s Adventure until I got my nes in Summer 2001, I used this game to distract me from the war and terror news a few months later.
EDIT: Also, it's cool how the Mexico Kirby's Adventure ad used footage from BOTH the US commercials for Kirby's Dream Land and Kirby's Adventure.

That bit at the end about older hardware still wowing people is so poignant. Many of my peers began their gaming journeys with the N64, PS1, or even the Saturn. I had an N64, but also inherited both a Super Nintendo and Genesis from older family members. I had many more games for these older systems. If I hadn't, I would have missed out on the greats of the 16-bit era, like Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario Kart. I was a lucky kid.
Kirby is probably one of my favorite series as well. Such a chill game and fun to boot.

I was never really into Kirby but I did have fun with this game when I got it as a gift from my aunt when I was a kid. Even though I already had an SNES, I thought the graphics and color for this game were the best I had ever seen on the NES...the first and only Kirby game I would have for any console as a kid.
P.S. Even after getting an SNES, and later a Sega Genesis (Model 2), I still always had my NES and its games handy...especially TMNT III: The Manhattan Project.

Seeing that magazine article with Kirby's Adventure and Duck Tales 2 featured next to each other, I remembered how all through the mid and late 90s, I didn't have access to any of the new systems. I only had an NES and Game Boy all the way until I bought the GameCube with my own saved money in high school. But I never felt like I was missing out. The vast majority of people I knew were in the same boat. Lower middle class families who couldn't afford the new systems. But whenever the older systems or games were cheap, our parents would relent and buy them. So the 8-bit era lasted a lot longer for me and most of my friends.

First played this at a friend's house in Santiago, Chile in 1997. I loved it and beat it there. I've only played this game in the franchise and none other.
You mention born in the '70s. I just realized kids are just out of school now and that in 1994, I graduated from high school. 30-year anniversary. Wow, remember it just like yesterday and I feel old. I still remember standing in line outside the building, for the graduation ceremony, standing in our robes and mortarboards. Two guys were talking about the ending of Super Metroid and I just stood there listening, remembering my time through the game.
That’s a cool story. For me it was a kind of sad day because the local alternative rock station that was awesome was bought out by the lesser rock station and shut down that day. A fitting end perhaps?
Now I see what I've been missing... I'm one of those people who barely looked back after Sonic and Super Mario World. I got a Genesis in 1991, and most of my focus was on that by the year 1993. However, I also remember that I had a Gameboy and Kirby's Dreamland was my absolute favorite game on that system. And while I never had a Super NES (just the "Mini" years later), it's puzzling why I never thought to check out Kirby's Adventure on the original NES, which I did still have. It honestly looks 16-bit, and the gameplay appears to be extremely enjoyable! I believe this would likely give Mario 3 a run for its money and likely surpass it in my eyes. I should definitely check it out!

Kirby's Adventure is easily one of the NES's best games, and that's saying quite a lot. It's also very approachable even by today's standards since it doesn't have the brutal difficulty most NES games are known for, and it lets you save your progress without needing to use save states. The only real flaw is that it's so ambitious that the NES can barely run it so there's a lot of slowdown, but other than that it's a game every retro fan should play at least once.

wow, excellent video! i'd say that aside from mother, kirby is probably my favorite nintendo series. so when i saw this show up, i had to watch it.
as someone who wasn't around when kirby was new, i was surprised to hear that kirby's adventure was really just that well received and popular when it came out about everywhere in the world. it's probably just my experience, but during from around 2000-2013, i didn't know of anyone aside from myself that actually played kirby games outside of smash bros. now i feel like kirby is everywhere.
my favorite aspect of kirby might be that he lends himself to all sorts of situations and game mechanics. the trademark copy ability in this game is a prime example of that, and he didn't even have it in his debut game. that's almost like mario not being able to jump. i think another really cool aspect of kirby's adventure is its really subtle storytelling. there's little dialog so almost anyone can pick up on it. but, there's little things like meta knight's encounters and assistance throughout the game, as if he's trying to prepare you for something instead of being an antagonist, or king dedede desperately trying to stop kirby after you beat him in battle, foreshadowing that there's something really bad going on with the fountain.
i've always been kind of behind with gaming. my first console was a super nintendo, and i would also play my aunt's 8-bit nintendo during that time. (this was probably when the n64 was nearing the end of it's life.) i'd generally say that for most of my life i've very rarely played a game when it was newly released, and even when i have a current gaming console, there's just so much from the past i haven't played, that usually i spend my time with those older games. there's not necessarily anything wrong with new games, i just find a lot of this older stuff impressive for how well it still plays given what developers had to work with back in the day.

I normally prefer playing remakes than the original (Super Mario All Stars over the 8-Bit games for example). Kirby's Adventure is one of the few exceptions to that rule.

Fantastic documentary about one of my favorite games! I loved Kirby's Dream Land and was absolutely amazed when Adventure came out. I already had a Sega Genesis at this point, but this was one of the games that kept me going back to the NES. I recently played through this game again and it still holds up 30 years later

Kirby's Adventure is one of those games that pushed the limits of the NES. It's also amazing that it was released really late in the lifespan of the console.
The presentation benefited from being released late in the NES lifespan. The programmers had the advantage of working on hardware that was well-known.
It's like Shantae. That title also benefitted from being released late in the lifespan of its respective hardware (2002), specifically the Gameboy Color.
And that it managed to be popular. It’s all amazing. I don’t see FIFA or Madden 19 on ps 3 doing that!⭐️

Interesting enough, I live in Ontario, Canada in an area that is primarily English and next to no French but, for some reason when I was a kid (I'm in my mid 30's now), my local Wal-Mart had a copy of the French Canadian Kirby's Adventure. It was only sold for something like 10$ and our Mom bought it for my brother and I. That was our introduction to Kirby. I've loved the series ever since. My brother has that same copy in his collection currently.
The nice thing too is that we didn't need to understand the language to be able to play it. It's a game that I've since played over and over again every year since.

Nintendo was part of my life from an early age when I first played Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. at the arcades and at home on my ColecoVision. I got the NES in 1988 when the pack-in cart was the SMB/Duck Hunt combo game and the Zapper was still gray. I loved my NES and the earlier games are still among my favorites but, by 1993, I had already been on the SEGA Genesis for a few years and had left my NES behind so I never had much of an interest in Kirby at all. Likewise, I got a SNES in 1994 and ignored the Kirby games there too, I was in it for the JRPGs by that point. Didn't have a Game Boy so no Dream Land either. But the real story behind all this is still fascinating, great video!!

Adventure was such great colorful cool looking sounding game. Kirby on Gameboy was one of my first memories.along with Metroid and Zelda. Kirby also on nes as I was maybe 7 at the time.but I loved playing it with my brother

The NES was the only console I had growing up until I got my first job and bought a PS1 and I was thrilled to get Kirby for my 11th birthday. I played it a ton and it's still one of my top favorite Nintendo games.

I remember the First Time I ever played Kirby's Adventure was the Remake on the GBA and a few years later I bought the Original Version on the NES at a Used Game Store and I never noticed the Technical Aspects of it until I saw it being talked on an Episode of Game Sack about Games that push the Technical Limits of Consoles

I grew up playing my brother's old nes while he played the cool new snes (he wouldn't let me play it because my hands were always dirty hehe), but I always kept them both around (along with a 13" crt tv) and somewhere along the way Kirby's Adventure showed up in our collection and it is still probably the most fun game of that era that I own and the music is sooo good too !! Awesome hearing and seeing the whole story ! I never knew anything about it ♪ Thank you !

My first Kirby game was Kirby dreamland 2 on gameboy. I was blown away! Loved the boss battles and secret ending and thought it blew Mario games at the time out of the water. Then I moved on to Kirby Super star SNES and so forth with releases of Kirby games but didn't even know there was a Kirby NES. Wow 8 worlds you say? I always thought it was like the gameboy game, short and sweet. I should play this entry.

Oh dang, this was such a nice little trip. I never played a Kirby game until MUCH later in life and I got hooked on the series, right around the time the 3DS games came out. I've since gone back and played more, but still need to dive in. Thanks for sharing this! Loved it!

I didn't get a SNES until well into 1995 because my parents couldn't afford it. Quality late NES releases like Kirby, used games found at yard sales and swap meets, and clearance bins at Kmart and Kaybee Toys filled with classics like Zelda and Final Fantasy at bargain prices were my lifeline as a kid :) No shame in that.

I remember playing this game on a black n white TV. My dad bought me this game and metal gear. My brother’s friend borrowed me Mario bros 3. I was the happiest 5 year old ever.

Kirby’s Adventure was my first Kirby Game and it’s interesting to note that it really did push the NES to its limits, the slowdown shows itself a lot but I suppose it was impressive for its time, I love how it’s also the first game to introduce copy abilities and them becoming the main central gameplay option for players, there’s something for everyone, my favorite would have to be the sword since it’s simple and you can use it underwater too.
I don’t really notice slowdown but maybe that was just because he moves kind of slow. Thanks for watching!⭐️⭐️

I didn’t really get into the Kirby games till Triple Deluxe on the 3DS and have been a fan ever since then. Definitely going to check out the earlier games now after watching this video. I really enjoyed this episode so much mate 🙌

FUN fact Hal labs did the eggerland series and ports of four Atari games to pitch Atari to release the nes in america the games are millipede, Defender II, joust and possibly kangaroo by sunsoft
Also, HAL calls themselves such, as each letter in their name is one letter preceding I, B, M.

@@GTV-Japan I mean SMB3 is great and all, but it is pretty much like all the other great NES game, great gameplay, memorable soundtrack, new features. Kirby's Adventures on the other hand shows almost everything the Famicom was capable of, and it was on a cartridge not a floppy disk.

My first Nintendo game alongside the original Super Mario Bros and The Legend of Zelda. Only game missing from my childhood collection of NES titles that would later become flagship franchises was Metroid, though I guess Kid Icarus also counts considering that was my half brothers’ game that we shared back and forth whenever they were down visiting our dad.

It was rather long, had innovative game mechanics, great music, and was just fun to play and run through. Plus, the box art!

Funny thing is I was not even aware of that commercial, I did not watch much TV as a kid, was spending my TV time on games instead.
