  • EastIdahoNews.com reporter Nate Eaton speaks with Amy Makechnie about her new book 'Ten Thousand Tries.'
"Twelve-year-old Golden Maroni is determined to channel his hero, soccer superstar Lionel Messi, and become captain of his soccer team and master of his eighth grade universe…especially since his home universe is spiraling out of orbit. Off the field, Golden’s dad, once a pro soccer player himself, is now battling ALS, a disease that attacks his muscles, leaving him less and less physically able to control his body every day. And while Mom says there’s no cure, Golden is convinced that his dad can beat this, just like any opponent, they just have to try.
Golden knows that if you want to perfect a skill you have to put ten thousand tries in, so he’s convinced if he can put that much effort in, on and off the field, he can stop everything from changing. But when his dad continues to decline and his constant pushing starts to alienate his friends and team, Golden is forced to confront the idea that being master of your universe might not mean being in control of everything. What if it means letting go of the things you can’t control so you can do the most good for the things you can?"
Mindy Rees and her daughter, Paige, also join the discussion. Mindy's husband, Wyatt, died of ALS in 2019.

Children NEED more stories about death and dying! My late husband was diagnosed with leukemic burkett’s lymphoma in 2005. Our youngest son was ten at the time and it was both a tragic and a beautiful 9 month journey that our family walked together, which made each one of us stronger and more compassionate people today!
    Thanks for the story Nate!

I am SO excited to get this book and read it! I am thinking that I will order 10 and donate one to all of the charter schools libraries in Pocatello, Idaho and in Blackfoot, Idaho. Before I even read it, going strictly on Paige's opinion of it! Thank you Paige!

I'm watching from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma That story sounds so nice and I think everyone should read it. My granddaughter is 13 and she has ADHD and she's so sweet. She gets so excited when she meets someone at school but not understanding there is kids out there that doesn't want to be friends. She's getting better and she's very smart. She's not at all shy but she just has times her concentration isn't there. But she's working on it. She does have a list of friends that she stays busy with. She is definitely a animal lover of all creatures. Doesn't matter what it is. She's a chicken whisper, Her mother was seriously hurt in car wreck and she helped her when she couldn't walk at all.

There will be a ton of kids that will be able to relate even when the diagnosis isn't ALS. Many parents have disabilities and it hurts to have to always say "sorry, I can't..."
