  • following on from my previous video on gathering duck feathers for fly tying, in this video i am demonstrating how to preserve duck / bird wings as a whole so that they can be used at a later date. Basically instead of pulling feathers out of the bird individually this method show haw to keep the wings whole

My dad picked me up a turkey wing on the side of the road, and I plan on doing this with salt instead of borax. Very straightforward tutorial! Amazing!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. A hawk skillfully did most of the meat removing in the severed pigeon wing I found...amazing. Cheers.

Great video! The only thing I make sure of is drying out the feathers before bagging them

Thank you Ehom for your support. Yeah It’s very important to have the feathers properly dried before bagging them, I find 4 weeks in a warm dry place with the borax if preserving the skins will do the job

When putting the wings in your tin. Could you stack more wings on top of each other? Or should you only single layer the wings in the tin?

Yes I usually put 3 or 4 sets of wings in a box when I’m preserving, just ensure there is a good amount of borax in the tub and on the wings

Hi I was given wing which was salted. I was told just to remove the salt from them. It was suggested that i you tube it to see how i remove the salt. Can i just wash off the salt and dry the feathers gently with a hair dryer. Would appreciate your opinion. Many thanks. Gerry

@@gerbal110 you can rinse it but make sure to thoroughly dry it

Can I do the same with table salt if I don't have borax on hand?

Could you do a follow up showing how to use the feathers. I know how to tie quill wings but are there uses for the other feathers?

Hi John, the blue feathers can be used as a wing casing or folded wing on wet flies, the small white feathers are good to use as small wings if tying small dries lie size 18 or 20, I have a wet fly I do tie using the blue wing feathers, in the coming days I will make a video demonstrating how to use the feathers
