  • It's often a thankless job: being a pro-wrestling referee. Training and performing as "the 3rd man in the ring" comes with an enormous set of challenges, and to help prepare you to don the stripes, I've called on the wisdom of some active, and some retired referees.

    The only other thing I can say is a good referee needs to know how to stay out of the way and when to be there for a spot. I did it for 16 years in the ring and total of 25 year involved in professional wrestling and I learned real quick when to be a ghost in the ring and when to be on top of the action. Great video from a former NWA referee.

    One of the most underrated traits of being a referee is being relatively small. I always liked Charles Robinson, Randy Anderson, and the Hebner brothers because they were very good AND also make the wrestlers look bigger by comparison.

    • @TilWeMakeIt

    Currently working actively on the UK Independent Scene. Very grateful of this video, very insightful as always. Really proud to hear someone of your status in Wrestling comment on the high value of a good referee.
    Sadly in the UK not so many promoters mirror your sentiments of just how important it is to have a fantastic referee.
    Would also add I see my job as two fold. Firstly to enhance the show as you mentioned, but secondly to keep the performers safe. When injuries occur it is vital as I’m the first port of call to dictate whether the match can continue for the safety of the performer.

    I just started my journey as a referee. Thank you for the content and great advice. I especially like the advice of working practice matches at your training school. It's better to make mistakes there rather than when the camera is on or in front of a crowd.

      @@TilWeMakeIt - Thanks Mike. I have question that could be good for a follow up video: Is there any recommended training outside of wrestling that could help out with any of the behind the scene jobs and the companies that we would be supporting. Example: Referee's taking courses on concussions/first aid certifications. Promoters taking budgeting/finance classes.

    To me, one of the most important things about being a referee is knowing and enforcing the rules consistently. Nothing takes me out of a match more than when two wrestlers leave the ring for minutes on end and don't get counted out. You wouldn't see that in an MMA match, so why does it make any sense in a wrestling match?

      At least for me…count to 8 if you know the spots. It’s okay if the count is slow, but it needs to be there for all those deep 9 count false finishes to matter more. It’s more gripping, I find.

    My uncle sent this to me today and when I'm watching random youtube channels I don't know, I'm always weary about how much people are talking bullshit with zero experience as opposed to how much people actually know what they are talking about. You know what your talking about, but yet left so much other important stuff out there about refereeing. Like another commenter already pointed out, you have to know when to be places for spots and when and how to be out of the way so they can do what they are doing. Another important note to say, and I'm surprised it wasn't on there was Safety first... If a wrestler is really badly hurt, as a referee it is your job to call that match off if you have to, to protect them. Safety always comes first in that ring, over anything else. I had a match where they planned so much stuff to do, and one of the guys broke his leg catching a dive wrong. The match had to be called right there. Wrestlers will also use you as a referee to pass on messages to each other when they can't so that's another important skill to learn. Finally, it is up to the wrestlers to kick out not you as a referee. If you keep a consistant cadence in your counting and they don't kick out before three, call the match. Don't hesitate or stop your count because they aren't kicking out, you only make yourself look bad as a referee and the company as a whole as it takes away any illusion of it being a conflict is gone immediately.

    I want to be a referee. I go to a local indie show every Saturday here in Bedford, Tx. Its a great show with great talent. The owners offer training but not as referees. They prefer that everyone train as a wrestler and go from there. I’m too old to train as a wrestler but would love to learn to referee.

    • @TilWeMakeIt
      @TilWeMakeIt  Před 2 lety +4

      This is not uncommon. Every referee I’ve trained went through wrestler training and can work matches. It’s a large part of why they are so versatile.

    A question: why is the count always in English for the pinfall in Japan, but in Japanese for ring outs? And in Mexico it's usually in Spanish?

    • @TilWeMakeIt
      @TilWeMakeIt  Před 2 lety +8

      Great question. To honor the idea that pro wrestling came from the US, a ref’s count is in English. But anything announced over the Public Address system is in Japanese.

    Tommy Young from NWA in the 80s has to be one of my faves . He did everything right ! But there were so many good refs back then . Bill Alfonso was everywhere it seemed ! I dont want to leave anybody out so I will stop . But the ref is more important than a lot of people think . If they do their job right .
