      If you ever built an airplane you know that the last 10% of the build really slows things down. Wiring is tedious and difficult to video, small things take forever. We are still moving however and when there is enough time progress to show the world, I certainly will. Thank you for your interest and patience 💓!

    Cool plane my man! Just started studying for my ppl and just discovered this plane. I love it. What part of Michigan are you in? I grew up in metro Detroit and I live in TX now.

      Let's do these all in one shall we? Airplane is located at 9D9, SW Michigan. Builder is about 220#: some discussion about how close to gross weight he really wants to be in the aircraft. He fits fine, he's just pushing the gross weight figures with fuel. I am sure Brad wouldn't mind showing you his toy. Let me know and I will hook you up with him.

    Nutplates and screws around the fuel tank instead of rivets? Do you really think you're gonna have to REMOVE that cover that often? Why didn't Monnett think of that? (Oh wait... am I supposed to call them Sonex? In my mind, despite the bankruptcy, sell to "INAV" in what? 1986?, RE-birth as Sonex Aircraft LLC today, they are and will always be... Monnett Aircraft to me! I attended the bankrupcty SALE at Oshkosh in what? 1986? and bought all I could! ) I DO approve of nutplates and screws if it really is something that will be removed often. I saw sheet metal screws much earlier in the build in a place I thought should have been nut-plates, but cannot at this moment where you showed them. Maybe wings? Did you go with the short wing-tips or long wing-tips? I am 210 lbs. But I wanna go with the short wing tips -- speed and roll rate are important to me!

      @TangoSierra2022  Před 3 lety

      Long wing tips and as of this writing, the owner has had the cover off the tank 3 times. Fuel leak problem now traced to bad fittings molded into the tank. Certainly would recommend pressure testing the tank and fitting before installation. He's really glad I talked him into nut plates. Sonex, by the way says you don't need to take off the windshield and combing to remove the tank. "just unhook it and drop it down and bring it out below the panel." I can't even imagine that would be an easy way to do this.

    Hi Captain T, I'm wondering if we could communicate with each other regarding our plane projects? I'm finishing up a Sonex Legacy with a Revmaster 2300 engine and would like to communicate with someone else installing and using that engine. Not sure if I should list my email address or phone number here?

    Here's a Very long message to review your excellent video! And, if we are patient enough to watch the whole thing, we FINALLY LEARN at 20:01 that you are in Michigan!
    Your Video work is EXCELLENT! Very sharp! Focused. Not so crazy about the music, same stuff over and over... But it will do the job.
    5:30: Jeremey Monnett says put ALL the switches and things you might need to touch or change in flight on the LEFT side of the panel (right hand pilots) so you can keep your right hand on the stick. Just sayin'.
    But... at 5:06, it is clear your instrument panel will be hard mounted to the plane. I am SO TIRED of hanging upside down, with my head way up under the panel, to work on, rewire, remove, reinstall, wiring and tubing and who-knows-what-else to the BACK SIDE of my instrument panels!
    From now on, Mine will be mounted with piano hinges (right, left, maybe at entire bottom row) of panel such that I can flop them down, or sideways to WORK on the BACKSIDE again!.
    5:32... Oh... I see you have been to Harbor Freight, too! That's one of my favorite drill bits, especially for drilling in metal, including steel! But...ya gotta be careful! Those step drill bits want to go just one step deeper than you had planned to drill!
    7:13: ELT? Did ya know that there is NO requirement for an ELT on a SINGLE pilot airplane? The FAA doesn't care about YOU! They only care that you might crash with a PASSENGER! With modern flight tracking software, if you go down, all your family and buddies will know where you crashed!
    8:00 What's that? An overgrown super horsepower Dremel tool? I want one of those for cutting thru metal in the middle of nowhere! All I have is the standard Harbor Freight grinding tool with 4 1/2 Inch disk! What is that, and where did you get it?
    Saw it again later. Forgot what you were cutting. Ooops... there is it again at 13:00. And, at 19:09 there's yet ANOTHER one!
    8:50 You didn't say a word about that lithium battery! Jeremey Monnett mentioned in 2012 that there was a 2.3 lb battery that could replace the 13 lb Odyssey battery .. Is this it? What is it? Did it Come with that snazzy mounting cover, or did you have to build it and snap on that decal?
    12:00.... Pitot tube --- does THAT come with the kit? How about static ports? Engine oil temp, oil pressure, CHT and EGT probes? Do they come with the engine or do you have to buy them separate? I see you went with Grand Rapids instead of MGL (Sonex insists!). Did the source probes come with the Grand Rapids or Aero Vee / Sonex? Or are they all EXTRA?
    12:37: Where did you get all those LONG drill bits? I see them often in your videos. All I can find are the usual short drill bits! I need those long ones, especially in #28, #29, #30, #31 and #32 brill bit size! I don't think Harbor Freight (besides being the number one customer of metric Chinese tool junk) has a clue what a numbered drill bit is all about!
    14:30: Landing gear: I am totally proficient and comfortable with a tail-dragger gear. But.. I've learned that NO ONE ELSE IS! When it comes time to sell an airplane, they all want tri-cycle gear! So... I'm gonna sacrifice about 5 knots of speed and install the tri-cycle gear on my ONEX, JUST SO I can SELL IT to the lowest common denominator pilot who ONLY knows how to fly a tri-cycle gear plane! I'll try to make up for it with the turbo Areo Vee engine. I see you went with the Revmaster --- a very wise choice! Dual alternators... oh my!
    15:03 I have two Golden Retrievers who help me build planes, work on my house, my yard... They would be RIGHT THERE trying to contribute at that point if I were laying flat on the ground!
    18:21 An Ed Sterba wood prop! Wise choice! Sterba has built props for VW engines since at least 1979. I bought 2 or 3 from him for my Sonerai in those days. His cruise prop really put the speed in my Sonerai II (mid wing --- main wing spar came right thru the cockpit across my knee caps!). I'm so happy he's still in business. The other guy (long ago forgot his name, from southern Calif desert near Salton Sea) died long ago.
    19:48 Please explain. OKay, we understand 'battery' in your world is what we call "master" switch, and it has a starter function with it. (I hate key switches! Did you know there are NO KEYS required to jump in any Boeing airliner or most twin prop or jet biz planes to start them?) But then... Magnetos, OKAY, 1 and 2. and then Ignition switches? 1, 2, 3, and 4? What's that all about?

    • @TangoSierra2022
      @TangoSierra2022  Před 3 lety

      All engine switches are on the left side. Only ancillary things like lights etc on the right. Instrument panel is easily removed via 6 screws and nut plates. ELT was owners choice, I would have stayed with a Garmin In-Reach. Battery is Earth-X and battery mount comes with kit. Pitot tube and static air all in one unit and they came with the kit, although thery do need assembly and mounting. We chose to build them into an inspection cover. Source probes are all furnished from someone, GRT or RevMaster. Long drill bits came from Cleaveland Tool. They handle all sorts of builder tools. Owner / builder has yet to receive his TW endorsement. Been after him for months to get on it and log some time prior to doing any flying in the Onex. Multiple coils and multiple alternators on the Revmaster leads to multiple switches for the coils. Xtra switches select alternators, battery and avionics. I had, at one point, convinced the owner to put a push button on it but he simply has to have that key switch despite it doing basically nothing but cranking. When I built my RV-8 I had no key, liked it alot.
