  • My Bolton 9 triple expansion model engine, which I must finish, because the build was started 4 years ago, is here running on the vertical boiler which I made earlier this year. The valve timing is slightly out causing some irregularity of motion. I am also getting used to a gimbal for my video camera. First of 2 videos. see johnsmachines.com for details of build, scrolling back to 2016-17.

    One viewer complained about the mess in the background. Well, that is after I had tidied up. You should have seen it before.

    What a wonderful engine I don’t think thay are self stArting am the next cylinder youses exust steam from the high pressure cylinder so if the high pressure cylinder is not moving there is no steam for the medium pressure cylinder to run off

      Yep. I have lost count of the number of times I have discovered that painful fact.

    Hi John i have just finished a marine twin and I'm going to make a Stuart triple next. I am going to (try to) make the crank from solid and machine the intermediate eccentrics within the crank (is this a bad idea)?

    • @johnv341
      @johnv341  Před 4 měsíci

      Hi. I have made 4 solid crankshafts, of which 2 were useable. And they did not include solid eccentrics. Bear in mind that without including the solid eccentrics you will need 4 centres to machine the mains and big ends. If you machine the eccentrics with the crankshaft you will need 10 TEN! centres at each end (assuming a reversing engine), which I would think would be incredibly difficult in such a small model. So yes, I think that split eccentrics is more sensible. But absolutely make a solid crankshaft rather than a built up type. John.

    Brilliant gauge, I see it says Smiths on the face, are they still in business?

    • @johnv341

      Don't know, the gauge was donated by a friend.

      Fancy seeing AE here!
      Smith's are still in business, they mostly make gauges for racing cars these days.

    Hello
    I inherited a part build engine that looks like yours. I’d like to send you pictures of mine. Maybe you can help with some more information? Thank you in advance,
