  • Sol is a villain who I’ve always had very mixed feelings on. He is just about the only antagonist we have who works mostly through manipulation rather than direct assault, but his lack of effect on the world, immediate disconnection from the protagonists he could have manipulated, and very unflattering backstory have done a lot to hinder any excitement I could have had for him. Still, I think there are many alternative interesting routes that his character could have gone down, and maybe one of them wasn’t even that far off from canon as we know it.

    I unfortunately don’t believe Sol is ever going to return, but I really wish they make another villain like him. Villains that use their intellect rather than their claws and manipulate the characters around them are so much more interesting then the typical brute force antagonist.

    I like Sol's use of intellect as his main trait, it really makes him stand out from all the murderers and tyrants we're used to seeing, also and this might just be me, but Sol seems to have this amusing, con-man type personality when manipulating people, especially the three. Read back through those scenes, Sol never talks first, he waits for others to speak and then uses their words against them by saying what they want to hear. It's smart, it's creative, but he's still a con-man in my eyes.

    • @Shaun_Jones
      @Shaun_Jones Před 2 lety +5

      The problem for me is that his con-man attitude is all he has going for him. The instant people stop trusting him he becomes less than non threatening. I’d prefer a villain who manipulates their enemies into weakening themselves, but can and will get their paws dirty when push comes to shove.

    'Sol would've been better served by not giving him a backstory at all' my thoughts exactly. I never read through the SkyClan comics in full, but seeing the panel with Sol banging his foot in frustration yowling 'I can be a warrior!' immediately soured any possibility they had for his backstory imo. A mysterious character should have a mysterious past, one that keeps you guessing, a Joker-esque 'if I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!' Showing the backstory like that, particularly in characterizing your enigmatic villain as a whiny, pathetic mess, really undercuts any intrigue an audience might have for the character. I suppose a disappointing backstory is suited for a disappointing character though, eh.
    Also: 'And always remember that I'm your friend, you can trust me. I promise... >:)' hMMMmmm....villain!sunny.... feeling Fear in the chat tonight, lads.

    Honestly I enjoy Sol a lot. I think it's very interesting that he's a real brat, and that he's sort of clever, but most of his manipulation comes down to him being lucky enough to get hyped up for a short while (because he was in the right place at the right time) and then massively letting everyone down. If we believe what he says about his past, then he's almost exactly like his mother, who complained about how unfair life was constantly- a trait he hated but ironically shared. It' great to see a villain that settles things without claws and also a villain that just isn't really good at anything. I think I find it refreshing because warriors(and other series, but warriors is especially bad about it) has a tendency to make their villains' strength come straight from their evil, as if malice actually makes you stronger. Sol was malicious, but a loser. I love characters like that

      @aggressivelyme9657 Před 2 lety +7

      Yeah I feel this. Part of it may be 'cause I barely remembered Po3 when I read Skyclan's manga, but I really like him as just a stinky little loser who has a little bit of creativity that he thinks makes him smarter than it does.

      Agreed. I have read that manga and I don't think they wasted his potential... He was still unique and if you look deeper into his motivation, it's not even because he wanted revenge, it's because he liked to manipulate cats

  • @keyravens
    @keyravens Před 2 lety +18

    An issue with Sol was that he was mysterious that even the readers had no idea what his motivation was. He never seems to have any clear end-goal. After being kicked from Shadowclan, he doesn't try again, he just hangs around, doing nothing. Until Skyclan and the Stranger was published, there are a good amount of discourse on whether Sol was sincere in his belief that following Starclan was wrong. There really was no clear indication either way. It can be good to keep readers in suspense, but it's not good to confuse readers. You have to give them something, even if it's not spelled-out.
    I still believe Sol would have been 100% better if he really believed he was doing the right thing. Maybe he had a bad time in Skyclan, then wandered to Midnight, who told him the secrets of Starclan. He then comes to the conclusion that Starclan is actually evil, and the Warrior Code is terrible, oppressive social code. He honestly thinks he's doing the right thing.

    I have an AU where Sol joins The Kin and manipulates them into making him leader, and in the newest arc reintroduce him and The Kin together. This time they destroy Thunderclan and Skyclan, For Darktail's rouges and Sol both dislike Skyclan, and Sol wants revenge on Thunderclan, and the rouges agree. I hope the new arc does this, though the chances are very low.

  • @aLostNym
    @aLostNym Před 2 lety +71

    Sol is an odd character. They kept hinting at him being more interesting and dangerous and then they didn’t deliver and instead he gets used for what equates to as filler. The books say he learned about the eclipse and the lake Clans from Midnight and Rock specifically says Midnight had no choice but to tell Sol so the Clans can “be ready” for what is to come. Nothing really gets done with this except for mainly a few more tiny mentions. He also says he would be coming back after The Forgotten Warrior with the implication he would somehow be involved in the Dark Forest battle but he doesn’t appear in The Last Hope or any arc book after TFW. His history with Midnight is what his backstory should have been about, not about SkyClan being the reason Sol knew about the Clans and wanting to destroy all Clans. It would have also given us more info on Midnight, they could have even dropped just a tiny amount of lore about her in it that would help in trying to understand her existence, and Rock’s by extension.

  • @yawninglion1677

    Sol is basically a very impulsive sociopath who seems to get bored really easily and doesn't have a consistent goal. No idea why he was even trying to help WindClan ambush ThunderClan in the first place, other than that he was just feeling particularly cruel that day.
    His plot definitely would've worked if he stuck around, became a valued member of ThunderClan despite a few cats seeing him sneak away every now and then, and THEN started conspiring with Onestar. It would've felt like a more legitimate betrayal, and we could've developed some stronger motivations for the attack other than it just being what he felt like doing that day. Like maybe he would be trying to "test" the three by putting their Clan in danger with no actual concern for any innocents he'll hurt in the process, or maybe he could be trying to goad the Clans into war to see if the eclipse will come back, or even as a living agent of StarClan who decides to help separate the Clans like they eventually decide to, again without thinking of the consequences beyond "fulfill the prophecy".
    Sol had potential but I'm pretty sure he existed just to add some drama during PO3. I don't know why they gave him such a stupid backstory. If he had to be tied to SkyClan, it could've been way more interesting.

    I actually never minded Sol's backstory, but in fairness, I read SkyClan and the Stranger first. The idea of Sol being this lazy, selfish, petty, and even childish character was an interesting premise for an antagonist. Unlike villains of the past who were ruthless and competent in combat, Sol lacks these skills and so must use his cleverness instead. He's a childish character whose head was filled with dreams of grandure by Cinders who was unwilling to put in the hard work to become a full warrior, so he resorts to cheating, stealing, and lying to fulfill his childhood fantasy. When this blows up in his face, instead of recognizing his mistakes, he doubles down and maintains his victim mentality that was instilled into him by his mother. Nothing is ever his fault and the world is against him. He's banished from SkyClan and brews on his anomsity and hatred, believing SkyClan somehow wronged him and that he's the victim. Then he arrives at the Lake and discovers four new Clans. Memories of his banishment flood his mind and fills him wil hatred for the warrior code and Clan that denied him his fantasy. So he infiltrates the Clans and uses his cleverness and manipulation to tear them apart from the inside, undermining the warrior code, making the Clans question their allegience to ancient ideals written by cats they've never met, being dismissive of traditions, befriending powerful cats within the Clans such as Hollyleaf, Jayfeather, and Lionblaze. He offers to mentor them, bestow upon them wisdom and knowledge the Clans can't offer them, slowly subvert their thinking away from the warrior code and twist them to suit his desires, all the while, he conspires against them behind their backs with the other Clans. He meets with warriors and Clan leaders in secret, offering up secrets and vulnerabilities, spreading lies and sewing rumors, stealing kits from their dens and prey across borders and framing other Clans for the crimes. He snatches at any opportunity and rubs salt in every wound until he has every cat hating each other, running the Clans' values ragged until they're little better than torn cobweb in the wind. He does this until he has every cat hating each other. He could twist the Clan's faith in StarClan into fear, jumping on the eclipse like the opportunist he is and claiming it's a sign from StarClan: divide or die. All to destroy the Clans who rejected him, all to enact petty "justice" over the savage cats who threw him out, the savage cats who claim to be noble but who wouldn't even give him a chance. His deceptions and lies are eventually uncovered, and he would likely escape with his life, but he leaves the Clans in tattered, forcing them to pick up the pieces, but they are never the same, and Sol leaves a permenant mark on all the warriors in the Lake, even sewing the seeds of doubt for some warriors to question if Sol was right about the warrior code - that it's outdated nonsense - and that StarClan is to be feared, not trusted. StarClan isn't looking out for you; it's watching to punish you with vindictive rage if you step a paw out of line. They send floods, storms, forest fires, droughts, foxes, badgers, and whatever other horrible dangers just to punish you, or worse yet, just to amuse themselves, laying the groundwork for some to completely abandon all faith in StarClan. THAT is what I was hoping to get out of Sol. He shatters the Clans, and he barely lifts a claw to do it. The mystery of his backstory lies in exactly what happened between his origin in SkyClan and when he arrived at the Lake. Just how long did he stew on this hatred, what did he encounter that fostered this rage, what did he learn and who did he possibly encounter to make him such a master manipulator when he was so clearly poor at it in SkyClan, and what became of him after he left the Lake? Sol appears in the Clans suddenly, randomly, and in unexpected ways, appearing from seemingly nowhere, and at first, he seems harmless, but his malice spreads within them like a plague and drags the whole Clan down to his level. If he can't rise to their standards, he will drag them down to his.
