  • Highly dramatic speedway 16-lap race held at Ipswich on 28th June 1984.
Complete race (including the two re-starts) and interviews at the end.
The riders: Preben Eriksen, John Louis, Billy Sanders, John Cook, Phil Crump, Hans Nielsen, Mel Taylor, Jeremy Doncaster.
A classic battle between Crump and Nielsen throughout (which is generally overlooked due to Cook's dominance), and a lovely piece of sportsmanship between Cook and Crump with a handshake at the end.
Commentators: Dave Lanning & Michael Lee
Host: Dickie Davis on BBC's World Of Sport
*If anyone wants a copy of this race on a DVD please let me know.
    Enjoy.

Yep, those were the days. The 1980s. When life was so much better and things made so much more sense!

Credit to Cook, he took it very well. Riders today would have been screaming blue murder.
And Crumpy, what more can be said about him? A 4 time Aussie champ in 1975, 1979, 1984 and 1988. He also finished second 5 times in his career. Then there was Billy Sanders who won it 6 times and the Aussie title winners trophy is named after him. They were the best Aussie riders of their era probably just ahead of the likes of John Boulger and John Titman.

I am surprised the tires lasted that long and they didn't run out of gas.

I remember standing at Belle Vue pits entrance watching the riders come in. Think we were against Bristol. Posh Trailers and bike racks for Peter Collins and Chris Morton etc, then came Phil Crump in a Ford Estate car with the bike and tools all crammed in the back. Real scruffy and disorganized looking.
Stuck with me for some reason.

Ah, those were the 80s! Wish we could go back there. I myself hung out at Hackney (my dad worked there).
