- College football has had some crazy upsets in recent memory. Everyone knows about the crazy Appalachian State vs. Michigan upset, but did you know there were 8 other games in the last 25 years that were considered bigger upsets?

App State has come a long way from being a low level football to a respectable team
Phil Ill “this decent” high school team is now harassing the FBS. Almost beat Penn State last year, and have been consistently winning bowl games.
@Xftbllplyr and what's crazy is they still got no respect and it's only because they played at the FCS level
This game changed that school forever. They got ranked for the first time last year and have won bowl games the last 4 years
howard baxter lmao exactly app state has been eligible for 4 bowl games since going to the FBS and has not only gone to a bowl game every year since but also won everyone of them. They have also won 3 straight sunbelt conference championships
It started pretty much in the Edwards era
Yes I went to that citadel game cheering for the citadel, most insane moment of my life at halftime tied against the national champs, then we got smoked
As an Alabama fan, that first half nearly gave me a goddamn heart attack
Andrew Robeson i was there too, as a bama fan, halftime as making me neevous

My uncle, Dale Jones, was a defensive coach at App State in 2007. That was the most amazing game I’ve ever watched. Dale is now the Defensive Coordinator at App State.
@doubleheadergr I don't see the need to expose your little brother for going down on people on here?
I figured Appalachian State was going to win by the 3rd quarter. That Michigan team was extremely overrated, and as much as Llloyd Carr loved Mike Hart, he was undersized and a step too slow. On that one long TD run he didn't have the straight line speed to beat the DB to the end zone. Mike Hart was a great leader, but he just wasn't a very talented athlete. The greatest upset off all-time is either Howard as 45.5 point underdogs beating UNLV or Stanford as 41 point underdogs beating USC. The only reason people refer to this upset is because of perception because they see #5 Michigan vs. a I-AA team.
I remember your uncle vividly, as a member of the Sugar Vols!! Glad to see his continuing on in his excellence.

Michigan losing to APP St is still the greatest upset of all time Michigan was rank 5 and they went unranked the next week 😂
Phil Ill they were ranked 5 forsure
J M true true but we know they should blow they ass out but never underestimate ur opponent
The greatest upset of all-time spreadwise was Howard beating UNLV as 45 point underdogs. UNLV could have literally just run the ball every single down and won by 14+ with effective blocking. The game wasn't televised, but I know the Rebels had a lot of fluky fumbles after ripping off big runs. That's a worse Howard team than the one that just lost 79-0 to Maryland.
Appalachian State was the best team in I-AA and Armanti Edwards went on to become a pro player. They were only 32.5 point underdogs compared to Howard (+45) and Stanford (+41) with their 3rd string QB against USC. The only reason you want it to be the biggest upset ever is because ESPN made a big deal about it when it happened and Michigan was ranked #5 with a lot of former 5 star HS All Americans who were upperclassmen (Henne, Manningham, Hart, Graham, Crable, etc) and the game was at The Big House. Objectively, UNLV is a bigger upset even though historically it's a trash program that makes a bowl game once every 25 years.
Cory Karhoff that Michigan team was good , you need to stop that cappin
@@DanielRGonza don't Michigan fans say that every year followed by this year we'll win the national championship then they never win it?

Biggest on paper is one thing, but after Appalachian State's win, AA schools became eligible for BCS rankings. It had a huge impact.
This game was likely the beginning of the long, multi-year process of App State moving up in the college football world. In 2014 they changed from the FCS to the FBS in a non-Power 5 conference. This year they upset South Carolina and have been popping up at the bottom of the national top 25. In the next few years they may end up changing to a Power 5 conference. It seems like whatever lower tier of the college football world they end up at, they always seem to outgrow it.
They just beat #6 Texas A@M lol.
This is aging very well since app state is still upsetting people
App state will have a long road to being a power 4 member. They're a nice little story, but they aren't a Ohio state or Viriginia tech or hell even a Kentucky.
When I read the title, I thought of two teams, Appalachian State and Stanford. Everyone knows one upset, but forgets the other.
but stanford is in a power 5 conference
@Xftbllplyr and had won the previous 2 titles coming into that year
@Xftbllplyr Not only the won the FCS natty that year but if I remember correctly, App St was in the middle of a 3-peat as FCS national champions when they beat Michigan.
I'm a USC fan. Believe me, we haven't forgotten about that fucking Stanford game.
But until recently Stanford was always at the bottom of the pac12

The "Biggest Upset" is a relative thing to your circumstances. I went to Marshall and was born and raised in Huntington. I and people around here believe the biggest upset was Marshall's first win after the plane crash. September 15, 1971 over Xavier with mostly freshman and walk ons, many who had played very little football. I know that is not the biggest to most, but it is to us.

The 2007 College football season is (in my opinion) one of the most fascinating events in the history of sports, I’ve been waiting for a video on it ever since you teased a video on the app state upset in your “College football 10 years ago” video, I can’t wait!

That season was the WILDEST season I’ve ever see and I’m a LSU so I’m a bit biased but that’s my favorite season of college football ever.
I liked the 2007 season because my team LSU won the BCS championship
USC was the best team in '07. The Stanford loss was historic, but if they had taken care of business against Oregon, they win the national title at 12-1 for sure. It wasn't fascinating because all those upsets were jokes with fake teams ranked in the top 2 throughout the season. No one really believed that USF, Cal, Kansas, Mizzou, etc were actually the 1st or 2nd best teams at any point in the season, they just got ranked that high by default because they won their easy games.
Bama was upset by UL Monroe that year too. Saban’s first season. Then has been a dynasty every since the following year
2007 was the year that made me love college football, and I'm glad these videos are keeping the memories alive. Even though my team was bad (miami hurricanes) the year was that good.
Same with Alabama. Atleast we won our bowl game aganist Colorado
2007 was my freshman year of college. All those upsets it was like no one wanted to win the championship that year.

The Stanford victory over USC required two great fourth-down plays. With about a minute left, Stanford was at 4th and 20 on the USC side of the 50. Tavita Pritchard hit Richard Sherman (yes, he was a receiver before he moved to defense) for the first down. And on 4th and goal, the play you see in the video, Pritchard hit Mark Bradford for the winning tD.

2007 was a freaking rollercoaster of #1 and 2's getting knocked off the same week they became #1 or 2 and ultimately gave us a CFB first 2 loss National Champion. I will never forget the 2007 season, Alabama (my team), was in a serious rebuild phase as it was Sabans first year at Alabama, but I had another team to root for in West Virginia, reason being that Pat White and I both graduated from Daphne High in 2004 and were "acquaintances" in High School and down through Middle School.
I went to Illinois, and during 2007 we went to Ohio State when they were ranked #1 and beat them at home. Crazy year.
I was a Senior at Liberty during that game vs Baylor. The school had its annual block party, kinda like a small state fair, and they had the game going in the background. That crowd went nuts after every-play. The school cancelled Monday classes to celebrate the win. Great memories.

I was at the App St game. I had never heard Michigan Stadium file out that quietly. My roommate and I didn’t talk for a few blocks until we asked each other ‘what just happened?’ Stunned.
I remember the 2007 season because as an LSU fan we won the National championship even tho losing to Kentucky while we were ranked #1 and losing the last game of the season to Arkansas giving us 2 loses. But how we got in was a straight miracle because every team ranked ahead of us in the computer poll lost that last week of the season also lol... Dam what a season that was, even winning a nail biter to a newly coached Alabama team named Nick Saben. Side note after beating Alabama Nick Saben told LSU coach Les Miles that he had a great team no shit it was a great team nearly all the starters were Saben recruits, players he had brought to LSU right before leaving for the Dolphins
White Rose the Alabama Lsu might actually be good again this year ..the pain i felt when y’all beat us 9-6 has been well worth the past 8 games
Remember Nick saban UAB @ lsu?
@@Commodore22345 How was it undeserved??? We won the SEC... yeah we might of had two loses but so did everyone else in the Power 5 conferences except Ohio State they were the only 1 loss team so obviously they got in the BCS Championship as the #1. So that left LSU (2 loss) Virginia tech (2 loss) Georga (Who actually finished the season with 1 loss heading into the SEC title game) Oklahoma (2 loss) USC (2 loss) and a couple of surprise teams like Missouri and Kansas. So what team in your opinion "deserved" to be in the Championship game with Ohio State? I might sound bias but LSU was the best team in college football that year. And they proved that after beating OSU. After the win all the polls had LSU rightfully at #1 and the coaches poll even had Georga finishing at #2
@@Commodore22345 And the collage playoff talks heated up in 2012 when you had for the first time in the BCS era two teams from the same conference playing in the national championship. Hell Lsu and Bama are in the same dam division. As an LSU fan that was some bullshit... Because LSU got robbed out of a national championship because we were the undefeated team and Bama was the #2 with there one loss coming from LSU in the regular season. I say we got robbed because nobody can beat Saban's Alabama team twice in one season shit it's hard enough beating them just once. But no they had to let 1 loss Alabama leap all the other undefeated teams in the other big conferences. We would of beat any team in the country EXCEPT for Bama.

Thank you for NOT mentioning Bama’s loss to La Monroe in 2007. Bama was a 37.5 point favorite and went out and lost to La Monroe. It was Saban’s first year. The next year we came close to winning a Natty and a year later started the Bama Natty Dynasty in the Saban era. In 2007, Saban was cleaning house and straightening expectations, etc. and some players recruited by previous coaches chafed on the new rules. Those that refused to buy in to his “process” were benched no matter how good they were. So, that embarrassing loss to La Monroe was painful, but became a cry of “Never again!” and soon we were rolling to a run of victories seldom broken by a rare loss. During my years as a Bama fan, I’ve witnessed half of Bear Bryant years, the Stalling years and the Saban years and one thing above all else marks a great coach - tough, but loving discipline. Those guys ran a very tight ship, with almost every detail covered to get the most out of the players they recruited. As a result of players buying in to the program, mediocre players became great and great players became stars. Winning begets winning some, but what really piles on wins is when you convince a recruit to go the extra mile in training and also stay out of trouble on and off the field (have character) and to become blood brothers fighting for one another’s success (develop chemistry), it’s magic. Saban has that ability in spades. He gets the most out of his players by asking them to buy into his philosophy and “process” for success. He’s angry and gets on to his kids about mistakes in games we win, but if anyone else in the press is talking about the team in a negative light win or lose, he’s a vicious defender and fighter for his players. They see him as the father figure many of them grew up without. He’s definitely the GOAT.
I know I’m late but that was a great game I know somebody who played for Monroe and it was a huge upset
I came looking to see if anyone else posted about it…
That team had too many bad habits. After the win over Tennessee they fell apart. Did go on to beat Colorado in the Independence Bowl.
Wasn't great for me as a Bama fan!!! But it certainly was a great win for La Monroe.
As a side note, I'm a Samford University fan since graduating from there, but I've been a Bama fan since I was a kid. Way back in 1935, Bama had a mediocre season. Samford University (back then, called Howard College) TIED Bama 7-7. Bama scored a touchdown in the second quarter. But, wait! There was a flag on the play. A Crimson Tide end, by the name of Paul "Bear" Bryant, was offside. Later in the second quarter, the Tide scored again, closing out the first half of the game with a score of 7-0. A penalty against Bama in the third quarter gave Howard the ball on Alabama's 37 yard line and the Bulldogs scored with a long forward pass to the end zone. The game ended a 7-7 tie, considered a victory for the small college. The Howard Bulldogs went on to win the Dixie Conference Championship with a season of 7-1-2. Bama finished the season 6-2-1, embarassing themselves with losses to Mississippi State and Vanderbilt. Maybe the tie with little ol' Howard College is where Paul "Bear" Bryant discovered that a tie ball game was like "kissing your sister," as he used to say when he was coaching at Alabama!
Northeast Louisiana had decent teams in the 1970s,and still a good program today. Ann upset win over UAla yes but not that surprising at the time.

I remember watching Michigan vs Appalachian St game live. It really was a great rollercoaster ride.
A couple of years ago, Appalachian State gave a very good Penn State team a real scare in the first game of the season. Watching Michigan and USC lose just made my night!
Most of the athletes on the schools getting payed to play actually love playing these games. It gives them an opportunity match-up against some the best players in their respective positions to gauge their own talents. A lot of the smaller school players only end up where they are at because they simply were overlooked,or under-recruited, some of them come from small rural high-schools and get written off because they didnt compete with "elite" style competition. This is why there are always highly touted players who get drafted and simply can't cut it. Its also why you get players like Jared Allen, who came from Idaho State University, or Mike Liupati, whose only offer came the University of Idaho, and got drafted 17th overall in 2010.

This vid inspired me to go back and rewatch the entire App St. v MI game. Here is the thing about it, it is not only one of the greatest upsets in CFB history, it is also one of the most entertaining games you will ever watch.
my two older brothers went to furman and the citadel, and boy oh boy is it fun when the small guys win
All these games are examples of ‘never underestimate the opponent’. The underdogs in these games had nothing to lose and everything to win. When I was in high school, my school won the county football championship trophy routinely every year. There was always a game every year where teams would face a team from outside the geographical area and my school had one. They traveled about 100 miles to face a school that had just started playing two years before. It was supposed to be a bloodbath and it wasn’t. My school won 24-21. They put up a good game and fought all the way to the end. To speak from the point of view of a fan of the dominant school in the area and got comfortable with winning; it sucks to lose and this school that I had never heard of almost ruined the season of a monster.
I remember watching that Stanford game in High School (still have the paper somewhere). I remember the point spread being 45 or 46, but I could be tripping. Nice to see them Winning Orange and Rose Bowls more recently
I am North Texas state fan, so I can remember praying for them to win every time they played a big school
And the video ends with the clip of "Stevie got Loose", when Kentucky began their 2007 season by beating Louisville. That touchdown was still the loudest I've ever heard Commonwealth Stadium, even compared to when we beat LSU later that year.
The end makes me smile, and legit it gave me happy vibes :D
Walking out of the Coliseum that night after losing to Stanford was surreal. The crowds walking to the parking lots were in stunned silence. I'll never forget being around that many people with virtual silence.
“Georgia State has entered the chat”
*Tennessee has left the chat*
What was that now?
@@ryank5761 you forgot that game?
I’m surprised UL Monroe’s win over Alabama isn’t mentioned here.
Banjo Yokel basketball
Big Chungus in 2007 Nick Saban’s team lost to ULM.
O that’s bad
God I hate you for mentioning that. 21-14 is like a Falcons fan being shown 28-3.
probably a Bama fan!
The Michigan coach had an offseason place in the NC mountains and got to know the Ap Coach. That was how the two teams got on the schedule together.
I was in the crowd that day for the U of M vs. ASU game. I don’t know if I’ve ever been around so many people in complete shock.
I thought Liberty and Baylor would have this place, but. . . nah, I knew it would be App v. Michigan.
I think I was the only Michigan fan worried about App State before that game. They had a lot of returning talent, from a team that knew how to win. Add in that it was the first week of the season back when that always meant a cupcake team and I had a bad feeling about it. I couldn't even watch the game because I lived out of state and no channels in my area were carrying it because everyone just assumed it would be an easy, non competitive game, not worth watching if you didn't live in Michigan or Ohio and local channels carried it.
Love your videos buddy - keep it up
This makes my day 😀
Good video
I know its been awhile since you have posted a what if type of video but hear me out. 😂 "What if the Colts were still in the same division as the Patriots through the Brady vs. Manning era?"
Remember when app state beat unc?
Oh wait that’s on Saturday...
Unfortunately our head coach left for Louisville in the offseason and took our defensive coordinator with him. Now we have Ted Roof at defensive coordinator who is a monumental step down. Luckily we still have a great offense including one of the best running backs in the country in Darrynton Evans. If we win it'll be something like 45-42
I live in Boone and my friend does training with Dexter Jackson and i'm a huge app fan!! GO NEERS!!!
Hell yeah he was drafted by the bucs hell of a player.
As a Boise State fan, 2007 wasn't a bad year either. Great video!
As a Virginia Tech fan....I dont know why I even bothered to watch this video lol. Damn you and your excellent videos KTO!!
us last year v fuckin odu last year
Virginia tech almost lost to firman. FURMAN. After always using vt as losing in bowl games he should do a video on their bowl run.
stevebobjoe I feel you brother.
Andersen Barry Wsu Va Tech Bama Fan same
The good old days of 2007! When USF reached #2 in the national rankings for a week, while in the Big East. Now we are a forgotten team in the AAC
I was at that Houston game. It hurts a little bit seeing that again.
Who here after Texas A&M just knocked off Bama with a -18 spread
7:10
Pete Carroll gave that same exact face when Malcolm Butler intercepted that pass in the superbowl
The exact same face. I remember that look like it was yesterday and Russell Wilson right by his side almost in tears
@@Macabre124 And Wilson will never so much as sniff the Super Bowl again.
As a huge Louisville fan I just want to cry after seeing this video
Jackson Wilson BBN!
jordan wilkins hey where’s your great QB at
I think in the hospital
Jackson Wilson at least you called him great. When was the last time anyone said a UK player was great lol
@@jacksonwilson7379 Don't run and hide when we beat your ass on November 30th.
Dude, your videos are the shit! Extremely well produced and edited, narrated with excellent information. REMEMBER, EVERYONE that a great way to show appreciation is to let the ads play all the way through. Make this man some money!!
The only time I ever visited Clemson was ironically when they lost to Pitt. People were drunk all over the streets. All over the sidewalks and in front of buildings groups of people were either being talked to by police, or stumbling around close enough that the police were going to talk to them next.
Lesson learned: Don't listen to Herbstreit.
A lot of people lost money in Vegas on that day.
Who’s here after A&M beat Bama
Excellent video as always, although LSU [0:06] is kind of a bad example for teams opening the season against small-fry schools. 2008 against Appalachian State (they had Washington 2009, North Carolina 2010, Oregon 2011, North Texas 2012**, TCU 2013, Wisconsin 2014, Miss St 2015, Wisconsin 2016, BYU 2017, Miami 2018) was the last time they opened up against an actual lower division opponent (FCS or lower), and although North Texas and Georgia Southern (2019) are much smaller schools, they are still in Division I FBS. Appalachian State was also a three-time FCS Champion back when they faced the Tigers. So it's actually the opposite, LSU has traditionally opened up against decent or even ranked opponents dating all the way back to the 2000 season. Just thought I'd point it out as an LSU fan, as I've long enjoyed their season openers for that very reason. Just a wall of text for a minor nitpick, haha.
APP ST’s kicker, Julian Rauch, also kicked a last second FG to win the State Championship for his high school, Ashbrook High; the same HS as James Worthy.
