Gravel is better - think about fungus in a greenhouse. Very warm, humid and with untreated wood chips - sufficient substrate
My thoughts exactly! I think the wood chips inside a poly tunnel will create lots of humidity in there and go mouldy. My choice would be gravel.
I think you maybe right😊
As long as the gravel is small enough that it doesn’t just cut through your fabric on the ground
You guys have been very busy! I love the polytunnel. Cristina is going to personalise it nicely 😂 and I imagine she has a long list of all that she will be growing in there!
I vote for gravel inside and wood chips outside the poly tunnel 😊
Rocks outside the poly tunnel?
Wood chips might get blown away by strong winds?
Pea gravel(round pebbles) work well.
Gravel(chipped rock) will poke holes in the plastic each time it's stepped on.
As the sun shines in, grass will grow up through the holes.❤
Thanks for the tips!
Wood chips might get termites? Yikes!!
Great to see u over 30k subscribers
Thanks! 😃
Love your channel!!!
That’s kind of you 😊
Hi James and Christina, to walk out and eat your breakfast from that fig! Bliss! You sure will have plenty of firewood. Our weather in Cape Town...perfection, esp with Queen Mary in docks and tourists enjoying Table mountain, wine farms, and awesome sunsets. Your estate is lovely.
All sounds wonderful thank you Nicolette 😊
Congrats on your first plant in the poly tunnel.
Haha! It’s doing well 😉👍🏻
You’ll need a rack with hooks to hang bigger tools . Looks really fab! Xx
You maybe right,🤔😊
Linda you would want to watch out there or James might commandeer the poly tunnel for his work shop, looked very comfortable in there in the rain !!
Actually, it was very nice 🤔
Surely misses you, love your channel❤
Thank you so much!
That Olival looks like amazing
I hope so! 😊
A Dutch door would look great at the entrance.
Sounds great! What’s a Dutch door? 😂
@@The-Quintaa split door, farmdoor. You see them also in stables. Bottom part closed en toppart open if you like. 😂😂😂😂
Lol watching you on the live jazz stream- looks gorg there ☝🏼💫
Haha! It was amazing. Ralph has done an amazing job 😎👍🏻
Lovely watching you two working together - great patter 😂 - poly tunnel is going to be epic - It was good to see the dogs with you …helping 😜
Thank you, I think it is too. We have another one to put up, but I think I spare you the pain of having to watch that😂😊👍🏻
Olà amigos 🤗 loving the poly tunnel 👌🏻we have gravel in our poly tunnel and it works. Keeps the moisture for longer when I water inside. The olive trees look beautiful 💚 we still have 100 to go 🥵 we love your furry supervisors 🥰 love your fancy footwork 😂 Enjoy the week ahead ❤️
Hey guys! I think gravel is a good option from what I read. As you said, helps with the humidity. The olive trees will look fantastic once they grow back and hopefully produce better crops. I’m glad we got someone in to do ours, now I know for the future what to do. Keep rolling guys! Love your videos ❤️👍🏼
I see how fast your channel is growing. Congratulations. 32.8K without weekly videos...nice. God Bless and stay safe. 😊
Thank you! You too! 😊
Your trees are going to grow beautifully now after their hair cut 😅 the back end of the polly tunel looks great , well done James & Christina you did a great job on the weeding, it's gonna look good when it's done, all nice & tidy, take care both of you ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks so much Jayne, slowly but surely getting there 😊
Wow the olive trees look amazing now, hope you see better crops after they’ve recovered. I agree with others, gravel for the poly tunnel, mulch could give you all sorts of issues, fungus & crop diseases being 2. Also consider the immediate outside edge around the poly tunnel, weeds & grass will grow quickly and strimming too close to the tunnel will destroy the plastic. Good luck 😊
Hey Vee 😊
Great tips there 👌
We’re taking everything in consideration for easy life in the future when I get to plant in the poly tunnel 😊
Getting there slowly!
Thanks for your continuous support 🤗
I think gravel in the greenhouse. It must be good to get the trees pruned up and on their way to producing. Nice sunny warm weather. Here in N.S. we now have snow. Two storms in a week. Clearing out the driveway: tons of fun. At least the groundhog predicts an early spring. 🙂👍👍🇨🇦
I think I agree with you.
Not sure I could handle snow 🥶
Really looking good guys!! You will indeed have some good harvests after all that heavy pruning. And the poly tunnel is going to be just FABULOUS 👍!!
Impressive dance moves there James. 😁
Christina, your potted daffodil is gorgeous. We have very long, often miserable, winters here so when the daffodils bloom it's a most happy thing.
Have a great week!! 🥰 ♥️
Aww 😊
Thank you.
Can’t wait to now get to the next stage… irrigation!
Then I can explore all the growing seasons and hopefully get our healthy dinners daily 😃
I’m planning to get some bags of the daffodils bulbs when I’m in the uk, I just have this vision of them growing in every corner of the farm 🤭
A whole new landscape to enjoy! So much work, but it must be very rewarding when finishing a project. Looking forward to the next vlog!
Thanks Mary. It’s a great feeling to get things done. 😎👍🏻
Fabulous job on pruning the fig & olive trees 🪚 Can't wait to see the fig tree back in bloom. Congrats on 🍍l'm sure many more if u put them in the mega polytunnel.
Well we can’t take any praise on the pruning, but they will look great in no time. The pineapple was fantastic👍🏻😊
Woodshipper is a great idea! You can use it to mulch later on when you've got plants. Composting, making romantic pathways😊👍
That's a great idea!
Olá Cristina, Olá James,
Cristina, I love figs and olives, too. And all the delicious fruits a vegetables that grow healthy in the Nature. Your place encourages all that with the constant beautiful weather ☀️. Things take theirs time but everything is turning beautiful 👌.
Much love 🫶
🥰
Marta, thank you so much for your lovely comment!
I know I need to be patient, I’m forever watching the vegetable gardens of our neighbours.. I know that eventually we’ll get there!
Thanks for your encouragement 😘
@The-Quinta ahahah I know from the neighbours looks always better 😆 .
I think if you use gravel the stone will retain heat and wood chips wouldn’t. Wood chips are more organic and will eventually breakdown. Just adding my two cents worth.
😀 thanks Lorrie!
❤❤
Hi guys! The olive trees and fig look good. James I agree that wood chips would be best , besides it’s free if you use the olive and fig wood. Also, I saw the two of you and Andy at the live concert event at Casa Bella Vista. What a surprise didn’t realize the connection. By-the-way congrats on winning the CD drawing. 😂❤ Thanks again for another video and stay well.
👍🏼 thanks again Lorrie!
It was such a great afternoon gathering.. Ralph did a great job getting a good turnout 😊
Well, your trees are now upside down!🤣🤣. They look awesome, it does change the view, in a good way. It’s so funny how the dogs, or cats too, always want to “help” when you’re trying to do something, so cute! Good neighbours mean everything, so sweet of them to share their bounty with two very hardworking people!💕🇨🇦
Haha! Once they grow back, they will be fabulous. Boris is never far away and we are so lucky to have great neighbours. 😊
@@The-Quinta we are in Spain for the first time, for the winter! We’re practically neighbours!😁
👋
OMG, i hope the tree-guy knew what he was doing 😊 If nothing else, this will keep me following your channel to see how the trees turn out in fig/olive season 😉
I’m excited to see them grow too 😎👍🏼
Love your place it’s beautiful, but would cry to see the pruning 😢❤
I know, but in a few months they will look great. 😊
This is super educational! I also wondered how to go about keeping olive trees trimmed and not tall at all. In all the channels nd vids i've watched, i've only seen 2 or 3 olive groves that keeps their trees low, which seems great for harvesting. So glad you brought in a tree surgeon to train your trees!
I also appreciate seeing a bushy fig tree get cut back to optimal health. They seem to go mad with growth in all directions. Oh, what a beautiful pineapple, lovely size!
Have you tried making tea with fresh olive leaves? Supposed to be chock with terrific polyphenol things, antioxidants, lovely oil. Do you want to save some of your skinny olive branches for kindling?
Those are really beautiful clementines from the neighbor.
Your frenchies are adorable to watch.
Your polytunnel is shaping up nicely. Its build and amenities to come are clever. V handsome.
We paid someone to do it so that I could learn from him for next time. The fig tree was getting wild so definitely needed a serious cut. I’ve never made tea from the olive leafs, but have heard it’s good for you.
I’m really happy with the poly tunnel.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment Ruth 😊
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love and bless you guys, good work 👍😁.
Thank you too
Definitely wood chip all your olive branches and use for the floor of the polytunnel.
It’s definitely an options. 👍🏻
sharing is caring 🙂 abraço
Absolutely 😊
where ever you may be,
Let your wind blow free,
In church or chapel,
Let it rattle.
Haha! 😜
You can root figs! Use rooting hormone :)
Thanks for the tip!
Hi there, I had sawdust in my shade house, it worked really well. Your property is looking great.
Cool, thanks ☺️
good pruning on the Olive Trees. I hope your pineapple was delicious. Your property is certainly starting to look really nice. Gravel for the floor of the greenhouse, wood chips are useless in that situation.
Pineapple was amazing! You maybe right about the gravel 😊👍🏼
Nice to see you taking time out, chilling at Ralph's place 😊.
Thank you ☺️
It was a wonderful evening 👌
Love you guys 💖 great work great videos
Thanks so much Miriam 🤗
You and your black dog look alike.
When you said the fig tree was going to get a brutal haircut, I didn't really expect that sort of BRUTAL. It was savage. Bet she will look grand in 6 months time.
I’m not sure how to take that 😂
The fig tree will look amazing as you say 😊👍🏻
@@The-Quinta it's okay. It was a compliment. The dog is cute. Lol. No need to worry.
❤
Your place is looking good!
Thanks Barbara 😊
Nice to see things coming together- not getting into the gravel wood chips debate but was wondering if you’d considered a wood chipper with a pto connection for the kabota. Maybe 1-2k but low maintenance , more power and longer lasting. You could even go in with Andrew. There might even be a small business there.
I did look into that, but apparently my little tractor isn’t powerful enough. 😎👍🏻
Gravel is the way to go for sure, a bit more graft to get it in but you'll only do it the once..👍🇬🇧
I think you’re right 👍🏻
The olive trees look much better, although I did like the large trees on the side the way they were. A little trimming and make a nice shaded seating area. With 40+ olive trees a couple left for shade wouldn’t make a big difference. Just my thoughts as I like different sitting spots with different views and shaded where needed.
I’m still jealous of your Quinta and nice weather. We’ll be in the Loule area this October for a couple of weeks, hoping for good weather.
Yes I was in two minds Robert, but I think they all need help. In no time they will grow back.
October weather is generally nice. You’ll have a wonderful time.
Congrats, you passed 10,000 subscribers! 🎉
Yay! Thank you!
Have you considered wooden pallets as a floor for the poly tunnel ? Dry, easy to lift, water and soil fall through etc..
That’s a great idea 👍🏻
Hai saya dr indonesia dan saya suka sekali dgn cenel mu.. Teruslah berkembang semoga kalian sukses dan bahagia.. Dan semoga anda dapat mengunjungi negara kami Indonesia.. ❤
Hi 👋
Thank you for watching 😊
Maybe one day, we will 👍🏼
The calm before the storm. Here in the last 24 hours we had 83 cm of snow with 30 to 50 more coming tonight. My car was /is buried under a 7 foot drift. Dad can I come home?
Damn! That’s a lot of snow. 😲
Olive trees now look great. I've just bought a house in VNdP and the olive trees need pruning. I've seen you need to open up the centre and end up with a wine glass shape but without exposing the bark to sunlight. Probably should get someone to do it and then learn to do it myself. Was it expensive?
Hi John, thanks for watching 😊
We just paid dairy rate, here in the Algarve it varies from 80 to 120€ a day.
Just need to make sure, who ever does it, knows what they’re doing..
Secateurs is not English... it's French. I had to Google it for the spelling. ;-)
Thank you so much for the lesson!!
In my world, every day is a school day 😊
Pruning Olive trees ahh yes my uncle one time helped my parents do his and my grandfather nearly died of a heart attack this guy just cut the hell out if them....but we sure had great firewood lol 🇨🇦🇵🇹
Haha! It does look awful, but the grow back stronger 😊💪
You still haven’t told us why you call Christina Linda. Great job on the polytunnel.❤️🇨🇦
I shall reveal very soon😉
I like that blue gadget where can I get one?
Had that years, but most diy stores sell them👍🏻
All fruit trees need light, apple trees are cut the same way.
Yes our fruit trees will be next for a hair cut. 👍🏼
I am your new subscriber from pakistan love your video recently watch. I love purtugal and wish to visit, work and live in purtugal but I have no access or money to come to purtugal 😭
Keep dreaming, one day you never know. Thanks for subscribing 😊👍🏼
You can hire me.
Carnage is what comes to mind.🤣😂
Time will tell. 👍🏼
How much for the tree surgeon
We paid daily rate, if varies from 80€ to 120€ here in the Algarve
Did you know if you count the leaves on the crown they will be a Fibonacci number!
Is that true?
@@The-Quinta 👍 Fibonacci is a code of nature, it’s one of the discoveries made after the publication that confirms the theory that Fibonacci would of not seen🤔
I’m aware of Fibonacci, just never looked into it much. 👍
@@The-Quinta I use it sometimes to build Market indicators that I supply private & family investment offices so they can trade the stock and Crypto Markets
That’s way above my head 🤔
Where is it ??
Algarve
Still on Holiday?
Keep watching! It’s about to go crazy
Morning not sure why but i follow you this one is the last update i got. Your new video is on CZcams for everyone to watch but not sent to me ? Xx
Good morning Brenda 😊
Sorry to hear that…
If you press notifications bell, then you’ll get a notification each time we put a video up.
Good to have you back 😊
@The-Quinta hi yes i am subscribed and I pressed the notification bell so just to be sure i pressed it again 🤪 gremlins I'm sure. Thanks xx
Buy a wood cheaper and mush the branches from the olive trees.
Serra as tábuas à mão. Não sera’s preguiçoso.
We’ve looked into it!
Sorry, not interested in someone doing your work.
Sometimes you need help! I’m sure you can appreciate that! Also watching a pro teaches me for next time.
Get someone who owns goats to come in and clear that stream. Did it on my property, it worked a treat. The guy just bought them in, put electric strand fence around the area and left them to it.
Great idea 😎👍🏻
