AS OF 2024: Each of the 29 MLS clubs will play 34 matches in the MLS Regular Season, 17 at home and 17 away.
All clubs in the Eastern Conference will play all intra-conference opponents two times and six cross-conference opponents one time. All clubs in the Western Conference will play all intra-conference opponents two times, one to two additional intra-conference opponents one time, and six to seven different cross-conference opponents one time.

I've been trying to educate myself in football recently so I can actually hold a conversation with many of my coworkers, and base-level info like this really helps me feel less intimidated

CORRECTION: As of 2023, teams play EIGHT matches against teams in the other conference
I've followed the MLS for 5 years now and I have never understood how on earth these inter-conference matches are arranged, though. I mean, who determines if my eastern team will play against the best or the worst 8 western teams. Does my doubt make sense? does anyone know the answer?

Playoffs are awesome. I’m sad to see it not implemented overseas.
They add a whole lot of fun at the end of the season
One thing I will mention is that the top 4 from each conference are able to host a home playoff game based on season performance. Also I believe the 2 teams who are the top of their respective conferences are given a first round bye in the playoffs. (Meaning they automatically advance to the 2nd round.)

If you play everyone twice in the east that's 30 games....if you play in the west another 8 times...that's 38 games, not 34
When there are fourteen teams in each conference and every team plays each in his conference twice (26 matches) and every team in the other conference once (14 matches), how is it possible that every team has 34 matches at the end of the season?
Yeah, that’s one I got a little wrong. They only play 8 from the other conference

For those who may not like the play-off system, or thinks it's nonsense, in the MLS (looking at you Zlatan), it's practically similar to how European clubs qualify for EUFA Champions League. Depending on how many EUFA coefficients (EPL currently has top four automatically qualifying) each league has, only a certain amount of clubs per league qualifies.. So technically a third place team in either EPL or Bundesliga can win the ultimate European soccer/football trophy, while the season champions can lose in either the group stage or knockout stage.
So is the American play-off system as absurd as it seems? Nope. It follows a similar route almost all Champions League around the world - and the WC - follow. In fact, one can say it's its own "mini-champion" maker - just for the sheer size of the nation.

Hey bud! I need to do a video on the new play-off format - The top seven teams in each conference are given byes to the first round. The teams ranked 8th and 9th in each conference compete in the Wild-card round, with the winner advancing to face the 1 seed in Round One.
Where does the us open cup come to play?
Before or after semifinals
Open cup is separate and the final was in September last year. MLS conference semi finals were in November

🤢🤢🤮MLS format is disgusting 🤢🤢🤮 I tried to like it but I couldn’t😮💨 (1) Relegation should always be a MUST😡(2) Conferences should always be for kids only. MLS should have between 16-22 clubs max; the rest should get relegated for lower league every year.🤏
It is tough! But it’s unique and that’s cool I think
