The smoke is white. Could be a lot of water in the exhaust from condensation and sitting. I would check for pressure or bubbles in the coolant reservoar. You could also check for CO in the water with a test kit.
If that's fine I would make a longer drive to heat the whole exhaust system up. There's no water in the oil by the looks of it.

Do not flip the air cleaner lid and forget headers you will have perpetual exhaust leaks with headers especially if you tow with it . The steam you saw from exhaust seemed excessive but thats a big engine moving lots of air so unless it smelled sweet or like burning oil I wouldn't worry about it. Your right about the wheels the factory offset will get them back under the fender. You want to make sure the cooling system is in good shape as heat and excessive rpm are the big blocks biggest enemy saw it a lot in Class A motor homes . And a second mortgage for gas will be helpful. Beautiful Truck and only 50k miles you lucky dog.

Wow - a veritable torque monster! 👹👹👹👹 I have a 402ci BB in my '71 Chevy Monte Carlo, and ya gotta love these Chevy BBs. Jason, this is a nice looking rig for an '89... I definitely like the color combo. As for the noises up front, I'd take this puppy for a decent ride, then determine what is making noise from where. It could be an idler pulley/pump/alternator bearing - as some people have already suggested, if you can't figure out where the source of the noise is, you could disconnect the accessory belt, fire up the engine, and see if noises are still there. If not, the culprit is probably one of the units that is driven by the belt. The smoky exhaust? Drive it, get the vehicle up to normal operating temperature, and see if you're still getting lots of smoke. Could be lots of condensation in the exhaust system.

  • @corey6393
    @corey6393 Před rokem +1

OK, first thing is you absolutely scored with this truck. Maintain it well, and it will live as long as you need a truck. They are very well built. Don't worry about the gas mileage, just compare that to what a new truck costs. Also don't change out the hard tune up parts until you inspect the old stuff. It may be just fine. But do change out all of the fluids. They degrade with time and/or use. Cheap insurance.
Now, I drive a 91 Chevy Scottsdale that currently has about 72K. I bought it with 48K about 5 years ago. Outside of the basic tune up stuff and wear items it has been fantastic. One thing that happened that I really want to share with everyone interested in these trucks, is the fuel pump can be an issue. Keep the fuel level above 1/3 tank at minimum. The "in tank" pump is cooled by the fuel, and they like to burn up if run low.
This leads to the next thing. A couple years ago I was in the middle of a 3K mile road trip in my 91 when it started to act up. Stumbling on acceleration, but always started and cruised just fine. Obviously starving for fuel. Long story short, I was losing fuel pressure. I finally gave in and decided to change the fuel pump. I cut a hole in the bed since I was at my dad's house and had limited tools. Turns out the pump was fine, but the 3" length of rubber fuel line connecting it to the tank outlet had begun to split, and was spraying fuel, thus dropping pressure. The new pump came with a new piece of rubber line that was modern fuel rated. Problem solved.
So, to all of those out there putting low mileage GM trucks back on the road, be sure to check that chunk of fuel line at your convenience, rather than at the side of the freeway with a trailer hauling your next great find.

You lucked out on this truck! What a beauty.
Smoke doesn't look like oil smoke whoch would be blue-ish. Just water vapor from a cold start. It's a big engine so lots of cold start vapors. As forvthe mechanical noise, hard to say when listening to it on a phone. But it can't be much because a spun rod bearing you would hear much louder.
Could a be a collapsed lifter.
Maybe the engine would benefit from a good drige on tge highway where it and the oil can get warm. A cold engine is always hard to evaluatie and judge specially when it has stood around for a longer time.

Looks like a nice truck, well done Jason. I would suggest the knocking was that bar you pulled out? A compression test wouldn't do any harm. The oil didn't look 'milky' so no water in it.The smoke was not black so no piston issues. If it hasn't run for a while it could be condensation and the cold weather. I don't know these trucks, we don't have lots of them in the UK but I would check for belt change intervals. That is something people overlook. Hope she gives you good service, she's clearly been looked after. Once again well done Jason.👍👍

That just might be the nicest vehicle you have ever brought home! Most of those trucks were used up many years ago. Have not seen one with the original style dashboard for some time. Big engines with big exhausts make lots of condensation in cold weather. Might be nothing at all; unless the coolant level is dropping that is... Did it smell like sweet antifreeze or oil burning? Noise did not come through in the video, although as others have said it could be a leaking/cracked exhaust manifold or broken exhaust bolt. Or maybe a noisy lifter that comes and goes. Anyway looks like a great truck that should give decades of service if you look after it...

Nice vehicle, I'm a little jealous. My opinion...remove serpentine belt. Check each and every pulley for sloppines (excessive lateral or radial play). All pulleys should spin true and not make ANY noises as you spin them by hand. Replace defective pulleys and the serpentine belt with new ones. As others commented, test all cylinders for compression. Put bottles of HEET or Seafoam in gas tanks until April. At oil & filter change time, add a bottle of ATP AT-205 Re-seal additive to rejuvenate engine seals. When engine sits (not running) too long, the seals don't get the oil on them to keep them tight. Thanks for another fine episode.

The only thing I can think of the fuel lines run in between the cab and the back of the engine now this was on the 305 sand 350s and when the cab out start to go it will pinch the fuel line but looks like that truck is in solid shape and you don't need to worry about that other than that I mean I think they go go go

That's a great truck in fabulous shape. I'm thinking that truck wasn't driven in the snow and ice. Definitely do a frame protection on it.

It'll go through gas like a fish through water, but where else are you going to find a truck that clean? Worth fixing.

Pretty normal for a cold big block.

Check to see if your losing antifreeze. Could be a head gasket.

I bought a 1993 4 dr 1 ton dually 8ft bed in 1994 with the 454 and a 411 rear diff. 10 mpg up hill or downhill didn't matter. My suggestion would be to pull the valve covers remove rockers and push rods. Check for bent push rods. If you know how, change the valve stem seals. But first run a compression test all 8 cylinders.

I'm going to agree with Gary H. down below. That motor (I call them motors) pushes a huge amount of air, and it is cold outside. So yeah, steam. As for motors. Detroit is not called The engine city. Just sayin. Besides, I'm old, so leave me alone. 😜

That is a good one. The only thing is the Gas mileage is going to suck. The 6.5 turbo diesel would be better. I had one of those and it was a beast. Pulled all day long at 10 to 18 mpg. 10 fully loaded 9k empy 18....that 454 will do about 6 pulling same and empty 8 to 10. But the 4x4 will be nice. 4l80e is a good trans too. better than the same year ford. they were trash. Looks good because he kept it oiled. that truck Is MINT for an 89 New Englander

Nice truck. For a truck that big, you need some truck nuts hanging off of the trailer hitch. I think that I would buy one of those kits from an auto parts store that lets you check the anti freeze for exhaust gas in it ( for a bad head gasket. Sometimes a leak at the exhaust header can sound like its tapping. To me the smoke looked white, not blue.

Lucas oil is pretty good about fixing dry valve seals,if that's what's causing the smoke.

Hey Jason nice truck get yourself a mechanic's stethoscope there not that much money looks like a doctor's stethoscope only with a long aluminum rod or probe (don't let Jen see it she might use it on you for buying all these vehicles) 😂 but get one and put it on and probe the valve cover exhaust manifold anything like the area where pulleys mount and you'll find your noise location don't probe moving parts like the pulleys themselves or get to close to the fan check the water pump though just be careful. The smoke you saw may just be condensation in the exhaust worse case its coolant getting threw a crack or bad head gasket. check the exhaust just take a quick smell see if it smells sweet and check your radiator and coolant tank level. I had a blazer years ago that when cold had a kind of low level knock on the drivers side which ended up being a worn piston skirt but when it warmed up the noise went away the car had almost 200k on it when I sold it and was still going until the last owner got in an accident and totaled it. Hey I bought a 1994 4.3 vortec with 63000 miles on it for the car because I thought I would need it and you know what I still have it why? well I paid $500 dollars for it and couldn't find anyone that needed one go figure. Well good luck Jason.😊👍
