  • Nipponia Hotel is located in Tambasasayama City in Hyogo Prefecture. Walking through the beautiful streets of the town makes you feel like you've been transported back to the Edo Era! After exploring Tambasasayama I stop by Itami to practice Naginata at Shubukan - one of the 3 largest private dojo in all of Japan. Itami also the birthplace of Japanese sake - they are home to the oldest brewery in Japan!

Funny fact Sharla. Over here in CA, there's an outdated law from the 1920's saying it is illegal to eat oranges while taking a bath. They believed the citric acid would mix with bath oils and create an explosive mixture.

I love how the Japanese feed the stray cats. Walking through the canals of Shibaura in Tokyo one evening, I came upon an older lady surrounded by cats (at least 10), feeding them wet food. I said hello and asked if i could help the cats by making a donation and gave her 5000 yen, while mimicking a cat eating to get my point across, as I had little Japanese. She happily accepted and I went on my way. Strangely enough, it was one of the highlights of what was then my first trip to Japan. Every time I return I make it a point to try and find her again.
Some would think me weird, but hey, it's a cat thing. I dont care. :P

The naginata (なぎなた, 薙刀) is a pole weapon and one of several varieties of traditionally made Japanese blades (nihonto). ... 05:34 that's called Miner's Lettuce in English - we used to grow it in New Zealand, and I've eaten it in Japan as well. You can just keep picking it and it keeps regrowing. Like most herbs you should keep it from getting stressed by too much heat or too little water, or it will go to seed. You can grow your own back home in a pot!

Ever since something similar(based on it) was used in one of my favorite book series! Protector of the Small Quartet by Tamora Pierce if anyone is interested. Only thing is to get some of the references and know who some of the characters are you have to read 2 other little quartets by her first since they are all interconnected

I loved it there, Japan is so weird and wonderful. The food is so good and so many interesting things to see. I miss it very much. The only things I don't miss are the earthquakes and the population density of the Kanto plain. Sharla's thought process with martial arts: I would kill them too quickly with the throwing stars... and everyone has a sword... hmm... OH they have a weapon that is a blade on a pole? Yeah that might just do it. 😄

That looks amazing! I'll be staying in a Ryokan in Kyoto next month when visiting for the first time, your videos are always an inspiration - also as a vegan myself, thank you for all the tips on places where to find yummy food 🤗

5:35 That's ice plant, it's rare in the US but a common vegetable served in high end restaurants in Japan

You're making me so hungry Sharla! And I have stayed in a fancy ryokan before, but nothing like this! Wow!

The oranges have vitamin c and vitamin c is used in a lot of anti aging products. The citrus enzymes also eat through dead skin :3

Wow everything in the Nipponia Hotel looks like an antique! I'd be so afraid of accidentally breaking anything :O

The hotel looked really cool, but for the price you paid I would have expected the interior to be a bit more polished. The structural character of the building is cool but all the bare stone(?) and wood made it look like it's currently under renovation.

Since the video is sponsored by the Hyogo Prefecture I don't think she had to pay, they must have invited her. I'm not sure though but it seems logical 😁👍 But yeah I find it a bit overpriced, for me it lacks an onsen for it to be perfect haha But it surely cost a lot to maintain an old house like that.
