  • Andy and Brenden of the KTGR Big Show discuss the Cardinals win over the Reds, 5-3, on Wednesday's show.
    How much credit should Oli Marmol get for his handling of Andre Pallante back when the Cardinals sent him down AAA in April? There was a question that Oli thought to ask that may have sparked Pallante's revival.
    Plus we ask Producer Chris about our idea for a trade between the Cardinals and Royals and get into a little lineup talk toward the end.
    Tune into the Big Show weekdays from 4-6pm CT on KTGR.com for Cardinals, Chiefs and Mizzou talk all year long!

    Great segment, guys.
    If we can hang with Philly in this next series, the Cardinals are back. Bank on it.

    Your friend Scottyboy here:
    John Daly was the punter & place kicker for Helias HS and won a Missouri High School State Championship in 1983.
    Daly won the Missouri State Amateur Golf Championship in 1983 as well. In case you think that’s an “oh well”, please note 8x Major Winner Tom Watson won the Missouri State Amateur Championship in I believe, 1973.
    And Payne Stewart, 3x major winner from my hometown of Springfield won it in 1977. (I was the YOUNGEST qualifier for the Missouri State Amateur in 1977).
    And if that’s not anecdotal enough Daly also won the Arkansas State Amateur Championship in 1984, making him the only winner of both the Missouri & Arkansas State Amateurs in history.
    Daly talked about loving the @Cardinals during an interview for Golf Digest in 1988, I believe. I remember that.

    I rememer listening to one of your recent podcasts given by Brendan and you even said the Cards should use Pallante as the number 5 starter. You mentioned he is a groundball pitcher who is better as a starter than as a relief pitcher. You got me to look at his Memhis stats and I saw an ERA of 2.20. You also said Liberatore can onlt get out lefties as a relief pitcher and even Matz better for the bullpen.. Great call Brendan!

    I actually agree with the perspective of not giving Oli credit. We heard countless times it wasn’t Oli’s fault for the start of the season and that his job wasn’t in jeopardy, so why give him this credit? You can’t have it both ways.

    • @bschaeffer12
      @bschaeffer12  Před měsícem +1

      I think when you understand specifically what we're referring to -- which is Oli making a point to ask Pallante how he'd like to be used in the minors -- that you can look at an isolated move and say that was savvy. In the same way as when his isolated decisions I didn't like were criticized. But most people just paint with a broad brush without getting into the specific decisions of his they disliked.

    Thinking if we could package glass Carlson for a strong arm it would be a win win. As for Pallante, I am surprised when he struggled. Guy looks good.

      If you were a MLB general manager who wanted to keep their job, would you trade a strong arm for Dylan Carlson? I have to laugh every time I see a trade proposal such as this one. If a guy is as bad as fans say he is, why would any team want to trade for him?

    • @georgesouthwick7000
      @georgesouthwick7000 Před měsícem

      I just love it when fans jump on a guy’s bandwagon after only one decent game. Pallante may well become a strong asset, but his history says he won’t. Wednesdays game is far more likely to be the exception than the rule.

  • @georgesouthwick7000
    @georgesouthwick7000 Před měsícem

    Just about any MLB pitcher can have an outstanding game at any given time. Alex Reyes in game 1 of the 2006 World Series is a perfect example, He never came close to that again. Until Pallante can string together multiple games where he pitches well, I have to consider his performance in Wednesday’s game against the Reds to be in the category of the blind squirrel finding a pecan.

    I root for Pallante. And I do agree that we can't lose Noot in the lineup...I suppose he must be someone in the clubhouse as well. Isn't he? Actually I'm concerning about him.

    Did Marmol "spark" Pallante's revival? Off of one start? No man. He did pretty darn well, but that's quite a stretch after one start. Do it a couple more times, then we might be talking.

    Yeah, ah, I'm sorry, but I'm not giving oli credit for anything, especially on pallante, not even for the turnaround of better team play the fact is there finally doing what they should be doing has nothing to do with oli imo. And just like when alot of people calling for him to be fired me included and people said you can't blame oli. Ok then you can't give him credit now for the turnaround

      @kennysmith15 Před měsícem

      Why can’t he get credit for the part he controls? Leading men is his job. Building a roster and performance of veterans who’ve been in the league for a decade isn’t on him. I would like to know from fans what Ollie should have done differently in any given circumstance. Then you can get somewhere on the blame game

    • @user-rb4ip7ki7u
      @user-rb4ip7ki7u Před měsícem

      Walker's Slugging % has been: 2021 A/A+: .548, 2022 AA: .510, 2023 AAA: .398, 2023 MLB: .445, 2024 MLB: .259, 2024 AAA: .381. If we look at Goldschmidt, Gorman, Arenado, Carlson, they remained at the MLB level as they ground through their equally poor Slugging %. Even Donovan was struggling. It's all a matter of what Marmol wants/his options at a position plus other factors (are you really going to send Goldschmidt to Memphis? No.)

    • @georgesouthwick7000
      @georgesouthwick7000 Před měsícem

      What this shows is that you can’t predict how a guy will perform at the MLB level based on what he does at A and AA. If he hits well at AA it indicates that he has potential. In most cases this potential turns into disappointment once the guy gets to AAA or MLB.

    • @user-rb4ip7ki7u
      @user-rb4ip7ki7u Před měsícem

      Only partially true. Walker had a slug of .445 in 2023 and we've seen top batters have lower numbers in AAA during rehab, then return immediately to form at the MLB level. We've also seen AAA batters with gaudy numbers at AAA utterly flop in the majors. The game is different at each level in many ways outside of increased pitching performance. The .445 slug last season was better than AAA, but they had him working changing his swing for more power. That can really screw up a hitter.

    Let Palante pitch, whats the big deal. Libby is way better in relief,so was Matz. If your not going to get a #2 type pitcher, it doesn't matter who is #5. Let him pitch.
