I went out to film possible lightning strikes in the University of Washington area, and ended up catching two jets being struck by lightning as they descended from the north into SeaTac Airport - Hudba
Thanks for not talking during the thunder. Awesome shots man!
Some photographer working for AP had a front page picture and he did not get credit for it. He went to court and received a few million for his photo.
Owen,
This is totally normal man. Aircraft act as giant Faraday Cages and have structures designed to allow lightning to pass in and around the cabin and structures harmlessly. I don't know an airline pilot or cargo pilot who hasn't been hit at least once by lightning while flying. This is some great footage you caught!
Amazing catch
I saw u video on the most famous chinese news website, so I checked it on youtube cause I am the student of university of washington as well. awesome one
Built Boeing Tough.
One was my plane. Eva airways. Scary there for a second. Didn't know if the plane was gonna hold together
Mike Von Millanich Balderdash! Also, guy in the video is a douche.
a positive lightning strike too
Great video, thank you for sharing. Minute 0:54 is the same as 1:23. Video replay slowly indicates the airplane is being strike by lightning from RH Engine (or RH Wing) to LH Engine. Lightning Strike Wing to Wing type that could impact two engines simultaneously, if not well protected.
Hi Owen, can KIRO TV 7 use your video? Thanks!
KIRO 7 Eyewitness News Are you going to be the typical media fool that plays this as something dangerous to stoke the fears of air travelers for no reason? Or is it just a neat interest piece? Lightning is harmless to modern jets. Ask a commercial pilot how many times they've been hit by lightning in IMC (Instrument Meteorological Conditions). Please be sure you are educated before you pass some bunk information on to the public, or sell a story for something it isn't all in the name of selling commercial spots.
Planes can easily tolerate lightning strikes. They do it all the time. Awesome video, though!
What time was this last night? I flew in on Alaska Air from SF around 830pm. It looks earlier based on the daylight.
+Owen Craft can I use this video?
did you know that the Weather Channel stole a clip from this?
There's a lot of that going around. Someone stole one of my videos to put on a local pet expo's website. Insulting part was it was on CZcams and they could have just embedded it; I would have been fine with that actually. I raised a fuss and they took it down, after the guy with the bird show featured in the video emailed me to lecture me that it was his show so he should have the copyright. Uh, NO... you didn't hire me, dude. But I'll be sure to never come back.
Dana Seilhan People have no understanding of copyright these days. Good for you for flexing your muscle as the content owner.
Dana Seilhan
Yes, they could have simply embedded it and you would retain the view count and they would retain the publicity. A good video really is free PR for them and a win win situation, but they just think they can steal it. By the way, they have no copyright unless they inform you of that ahead of time.
Shes at are MRO now for that lighting strike were doing a inspection and the cargo door (fwd) and the upper fuselage has some damage but not to bad.
Pretty amazing.
Why doesnt he react at the lightning strikes, weirding me out!
I'm guessing it happened so fast that he didn't realize that they got struck until he watched the video back
Brianna Marie Yeah that's why he filmed several airplanes going into thunderstorm.
I thought the same thing. That said, he's clearly there to shoot footage of planes getting struck, so perhaps there was no element of surprise for him.
What camcorder are you using? When I zoom in that far in the dark my camera is going blurry. So annoying. While it costed about 900 bucks:S
Seems like it is not really struck as the lightning got further, basically the plane had the same potential.
dude, do not give any media the rights to your video. Monetize this right away and do not sign up with any networks.
Agreed. I saw this on TWC and immediately came to YT to see if they had poached it. Of course, try posting something of theirs to YT and see what happens. LOL.
Fellow Washingtonian!
Badass!
It can handle it !
Any aeronautical engineers here that can tell me what sort of damage that would do to the planes? If any?
Definitely not an aeronautical engineer, but until one comes along to answer your question...I am a pilot and I've been struck by lightning while acting as a cockpit crewmember, and also as a passenger on an airliner. A lightning strike will most certainly ground the aircraft until maintenance can inspect it. Usually an inspection will reveal dime to quarter-sized burn marks on the skin of the aircraft, marking the lightning bolt's entry and exit points. Aircraft have static wicks installed on the trailing edge of the wing to dissipate static electricity built up during flight into rain or dust. Static wicks are obviously susceptible to destruction by lightning strikes. More serious damage can certainly occur to the sensitive electronics onboard. Most flight departments have policies against flying within 25 miles of a thunderstorm to prevent damage to aircraft by lightning, turbulence, or hail. Do a Google image search for lightning damage to aircraft
Travis Church
Thanks so much for the answer! The photos of lightning damage really help to understand the aftermath.
+Serenity Lake field That is a myth that has been proven wrong many times.
BAM BAM

لا اله الا الله وحده لا شريك له
who the fuck is filmcraft productions?
My guess is that it's a 19-year old with a video camera from Best Buy. LOL.
I think getting hit by a lighting in midair
is far safer than an insane pilot who wants to show off to her ex GF
Ok...everybody on three...1..2..3....APRIL FOOL'S
For god sake can they please stop this slow motion crap. I did saw it good enough with the normal speed shot. This is so annoying that this is happening each time.
Also, the whole world is using you're video. Yes they link to this video. But they do NOT use copyright. Did you allow them to use it? And if no: Sue them!
Love lightning so much. But it's SO dangerous. Sadly most airplanes nowadays are full with electronic gear that shou;dn't be made to widstand a direct strike like these. Weirdly though it's safer now then many years ago. Still stays COOL this.
HONEY SIMPSON
Faraday was right! lol
Wtf is wrong with this guy?
