Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) was perhaps the most famous French pianist in his lifetime. He was also an acclaimed composer (including the famous “Organ” Symphony,)
and served as organist at the fashionable Parisian Church of the Madeleine. Presiding
over one of France's most illustrious organs, Saint-Saëns was knows for a strict classical formality
in his music. This little wedding meditation was probably composed for the signing
of the register during the wedding of Madam la marquise de Mornay to whom it is dedicated in 1859.
