one of REM's best songs
Hard to choose
@@markfromct2 yea I can listen to whole albums.
There are certain 90’s songs that give me an overwhelmingly painful and bittersweet sense of nostalgia. This is definitely one of them.
One of those songs that reminds me of playing my radio low all night in my bedroom. This one especially reminds me of hearing music while half awake and half asleep at 3am.
The 90's are a boss son. You'd be well advised to keep the 90's out of your mouth.
Ahh, bleep77 the old hypocrite. Commenting the 100th song with the same text...
@@Zerschmetterling-pg3ph “This is definitely one of them”. What part of that statement did you not understand? “There are certain songs...” Songs, not song. Learn to read before making dumbass comments like the one you just made. It’s my comment, and I can put it anywhere and anytime I want, loser.
Yes it does for me to
These guys were far ahead of their time. Stunning song.
you clearly have picked up a fashion expression which is a disgrace of people like Leonardo da Vinci who actually were ahead of their time.
@@FlickanIDetKroktaRummet It's not a disgrace if you understand a little something about context. REM were ahead of their time musically and lyrically in the context of English-language popular music of the tail end of the 20th century. Leonardo da Vinci was one of maybe a handful of people in human history whose life and work continue to inspire and provoke centuries after his passing. He's timeless.
Agreed
It seems the radio has forgotten about R.E.M. What a shame. Still my favorite band EVER.
You have good taste.
The local "rock" station I have here in Philly (93.3 WMMR) whips out 'The One I Love' every so often; occasionally 'It's The End Of The World As We Know It' too. That's about it.
20-30 years ago, you couldn't turn on that radio station without hearing at least 6 R.E.M. singles in the day's rotation.
In the UK we still get the classics on mainstream non pop stations regually... but there early stuff will be never be heard which is a shame, 90s ,20s they still were bloody amazing lol
Mine too 30 yrs now still the best and always will be that's fact
Seen ya vids mmmmm you hot
Just stepping into REM at 41 years old. Yes, I have said many times in the last few weeks "Why haven't I given these guys a chance". Better late than never ! Enjoying the ride.
Don’t feel bad. That’s how I feel at 32 years old. I remember my parents listening to them when I was little but I never paid attention nor appreciated their music
I know that feeling when it comes to other great bands I wish I had given a listen to sooner. I'm 57, and although I've loved R.E.M.'s sound since I first heard them when I was around 20, I've only recently discovered a host of other great bands - The Hoodoo Gurus, The Feelies, The Dream Syndicate, and The Church. I have to admit, the Internet and sites like CZcams make it much easier to discover new music than it was back in the day.
One of the finest bands of the last century, no doubt.
It definitely happens I find music that I only heard because of radio but now I have a different point of view
44 and kind of the same boat..., all I knew was radio songs, which I've liked.., now, I am starting to realize what I've missed 😢
Such a great song till this day
that skidding strum...
*Monster* was definitely one of *REM's* strongest pieces of work!!
Very underrated after Automatic but I always loved it
Their best.
ITA
Yes as I agree with that statement!
Masterpiece. One of their best masterpieces.
Underrated!
Quiet and explosive at the same time
Like I said in my comment, it's Losing My Religion with different lyrics and electric instruments. But it is a great song.
Or their worst. Or their mediocre. It's really good, but don't go on about it.
Damn. I have not heard this in a long, long time. Came out as I was graduating from college in 1994.
Now my oldest is wrapping up her freshman year. Same university.
Time flies.
Wow! great to know ❤
I am amazed this song only has 5.8 million views. This is one of the best 90s songs ever made.
Great band, & i am 70 years old & still love their music.
No one gives a fk.
This is arguably the time frame when REM was the biggest band in the world along with U2. Mills with the Lennonesque glasses...Buck with the incredibly huge sideburns...they had it all going on. Hell of a band.
1 U2
2 REM
Better than U2
@@danmetcalf3866 Doubt that
@@redrocks19831 REM 2 U2. I like U2 but time has proved REM were better and more real.

THIS was the song that truly, finally got me into R.E.M. One of my all time favourite bands ❤
Nearly 70 grown old with loads of music REM just the best
R.E.M. where at their peak here. Masterpiece of an album. Peter Buck's guitar sound is badass.
I love the fact that they collaborated with Thurston Moore for their song Crush With Eyeliner. It was an awesome collaboration

Happy Birthday today(January 4) to Michael Stipe. Cheers!🥨
If I was ever asked to "sum up the 90s with one song" I'd just pop this on. Still puts me in a place all these years later.
Love it!
Berry, Buck, Mills and Stipe
Guarantee of awesome music
A song that makes you want to groove while lyrically think about the emotionally deep meaning.
There hasn’t been a listen in 29 years where I’ve ever tired of this absolute brilliant song
So spacious
Unique feedback
Addictive bass line and such a melody.
So good.
The end bit too .... ❤️
This type of song takes me back to the distant past and makes me feel very painful
One of the best bands out there hands down.
Too bad they retired.
When I listen to this song it makes me think of my childhood. My parents had money and professional jobs, so everyone thought that I had it made, but really, they were both emotionally abusive. They tore me down and told me that I would never amount to anything because of my disability. My Mom was very obsessed with society's standards of beauty and told me once (when I hit puberty) that if I gained anymore weight she would wire my jaw shut. My father told me not to go to university because he felt my IQ was too low (I had the top mark in my psychology in University.) I used to think I was a failure in every aspect of my life and and then I realized the only reason I fail at a task is because I give up. I struggle daily with the voices that still haunt me but I tell myself "It's not my fault so let it go." I now realize my parents were the ones who had the problem.
Chelsea Mercer damn right
Let it go, and be yourself - people will appreciate you for you
Chelsea Mercer without knowing you're situation parents project there own insecurities onto their children - not all mind you but it's barbaric.
I had a similar situation.
Pretty much parallel, and this osng reminds me of my childhood too.
Dear Chelsea,
wise words written by a wise woman - I think.
Who are you now?
With best wishes from Europe

Very underrated album. Love the guitar sound they used for it!
the guitar sound in this album is great and can still be a trendsetter for new inspirated bands
Very underrated ? This album was number ONE in USA, UK and many others countries, bro.
4x platinum in USA...🤔
Awesoome Delay on The Guitar.
@@rustedcorpse5645 😍😍😍😍
Bill is such musical drummer, he always plays exactly what the song requires but also has a flair and feel that’s understated and expressive at the same time. No easy feat that. R.E.M. never sounded like R.E.M. after he left and for a drummer that is such a compliment.
He wuz an amazing drummer. Do you also know that he wrote the song "Leave", which is one of their best tracks. Very underrated when he's actually among the best ever in rock n roll
Have you heard about man named Ringo?

Hip Hop destroyed music for people who like instruments or vocals sung by people who have good voices. I haven't listed to the radio for 20 years because music quality fell off a cliff as did TV and the news. It's like the media decided to dumb down society. Fortunately music like this is not lost. Thanks for the posting.
Yes. I think you are right. Hip hop definitely plays a role in destroying good music or destroying the possibilities for good music. Todays Radio is a nightmare.😳
I hate that HIP HP garbage, It should be redefined as skiffle, only not quite as good.
You took the words right out of my head. I've been saying the same thing. Mainstream music today is the worst it's ever been.
Fkn ay to that😊
Absolutely
I MISS YOU REM!! COME BACK!
I remember growing up listening to REM. I liked their songs. But nothing touched me the way that "Monster" did. The first time I saw the video for "Bang and Blame," it floored me. They had my complete attention. It was so emotionally complex. It tapped into feelings that I didn't know how to express, and maybe still don't. It's really hard to admit that I always worry that I'll end up being one of my parents- I'll either be the banger or the blamer. That fear is kind of crippling. I don't feel like I can have any serious relationships because it's too risky. This song (and the amazing video) felt like the first and only time anyone understood that feeling. It's still a personal favorite.
I also totally feel that R.E.M. hold something very deep, universal and almost mystical...poetry and emotions and feelings of the soul that you cannot express with words...only with the music, the amazing photography and art of the videos and the poetry of Michael...when I was studying American Studies in Budapest, and Halloween was coming up, and the turning of yellow and red of the leaves, my heart and mind exapnding with my studies and the poetry I was reading and writing at the time, the critical thinking our professors challenged us to, the feeling of the whole world and life ahead of me, and those nights, the crisp cool of the air, and then Christmas, when one year I think 1995 I asked for the Reveal album...sometimes, when I had no words to describe it, just these feelings and emotions of something bigger, something poetic and unexplainable, of love, lust and magic...I would say to myself: I've got that Michael Stipe feeling again. 😊 I still can't really explain the wealth of feelings and emotions this means to me, and a lot of us, something to do with the U.S., something with all of humanity, spirituality, and art. I love you, R.E.M! ❤👍🙏😊🌟❤
I hope to God you don't still feel this way. you are you, and you recognize something that is not you. That is a HUGE achievement on your part. Bravo! So you can move on, but you don't have to carry that into any relationship. Instead, if you see it happening address it with the person you're in a relationship with, and pray, pray pray to get over it, because, despite what all these agnostics believe (or profess they "don't believe") prayer does work. It got me over my dad's PTSD that I had somehow allowed to inhabit part of me... Don't ever give up.

Karen, I noticed that alot of their songs are.👍
A timeless classic. Most people can relate to this who have been involved with another human intimately.
Hi I recommend listening to a couple of songs called 'Where I Come From' and 'Covid19Jam' By Robert Nix

Music is so amazing. This song transports me to one of the best years of my life.
It sure does This song reminds me of one of the lowest points of my life But I still love ❤️ it
River was THAT special, after he died MANY artists created songs about/tribute to River. It's like every single person in this world loves him dearly. He must have a gentle heart and a beautiful soul..
@@catr4435 who said that? 👀
I think it was obvious they were romantically involved despite stipe always said he was "my little brother" I mean almost all the songs he wrote about him was love songs. And the fact that stipe visit river in Utah and stay with him for few days to accompany riv shooting his movie dark blood despite stipe busy schedule to prepare new album said enough. Lately stipe said he spent 5 years grieving him. And 'at my most beautiful' the only love song stipe ever wrote about river too, the clue was all over the lyrics. The video even staring riv's sister Rain phoenix.
NEVERRRRRRR I can never forget my guy Michael. 😍😘😍 and Mike and Peter of course. Best rock band in American history.
I agree hun
Love that guitar with delay on the verse sooo much👍

Monster (River Phoenix dedicated) is a masterpiece! What's the frequency Kenneth? Crush with eyeliner, Bang and Blame, Tongue, Let me in (Kurt Cobain tribute), I don't sleep i dream, Strange currencies (Michael Hutchence tribute), Star 69, I took you name live (r.e.m. live video), Circus envy ( live at Olimpia video) are some best songs in R.e.m. catalogue! Five stars!
I've already commented once - but I watch this video every day, so, you know - I've concluded that this is REM's best song ever. Man that's saying a lot. And while I'm expounding, no one has a more distinctive, compelling singing voice than Michael. OK I'll shut up now.
You're probably right. They peaked here.
One of the most underrated REM songs
Mike, Michael and the guys deserve every Fing penny they have, they grinded it out in the early days. I know personally. The Monster record was kinda Pete”s return to glory. His electric guitar is splashed all over the record... the reverb on Crushed by Eyeliner is fantastic
Monster is such a great album. I'm glad it's getting more love over the years because when it came out people were very critical of it. My favorite r.e.m. albums are automatic for the people, monster, and adventures in hi-fi. They took risks on those album without losing their voice. When my band opened a R.e.m. tribute show we had to choose from a list of songs (the headline got first pick) and this song wasn't taken. Hell it wasn't even on the list! So we opened the show with this song and the crowd LOVED it!
My choice of albums too 👍
Also my favorites
it's so beautiful to see River still living on and seeing his ever lasting impact on people. Wish you were here.

Bang and Blame, and Drive are my 2 favorite songs by REM.
Wake up Bomb has always been my favourite!

Classic REM… underrated song and rarely played on the radio.
Let's just admit. This song is perfection. Greetings from Slovenia
I had 0 problems when I perchased this CD back in 94
I bet you didn't get the puke green monster shirt that came with the CD. That shirt was the best
And so I did

For 4 minutes and 47 seconds today, I felt like I had no problems.
46 years old and never liked this song in the 90s. Absolutely love it now. ???
There are so many reasons why i love REM. This song is one of those reasons.
Same here , found it tonight :)
En mí caso, yo siempre la tengo presente a ésta canción. Ya que la veía en MTV. Recuerdos que parece que fuera ayer.

Bang and blame and crush with eyeliner are 2 of their best.

Definitely a favorite. I came up listening to music through the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. Not so much with music today, but each decade had so much to offer. My now 40-year-old son once complained to a friend about how his Dad had more of his generation's music than he did. Love R. E. M.
I think this is REM's best song
I just couldn't pick only one. At least there are 40 other contenders. But this is definitely one of them.

Secret life of indiscreet discretions... oh?? 😉
This song reminds me of the breakup of my marriage and the bittersweet friendship that came afterwards.
I have a lot of REM songs on my playlist , I have all sorts of songs from the past 50 years or so. I am 46 years old. So one day out of the blue my niece and one of her friends asked me if I could take them to Houston Tx, which is roughly a 6 hour drive from where I live, one thing I was not going to do was listen to my niece's music for six hours. When this song came on I noticed that my niece had taken her earbuds out and was listening to the song, when it went off she asked who was singing, and she asked me to play it again. Along with a few Depeche Mode songs, and some Metallica and Guns n Roses songs as well. My niece had no idea who any of the people were singing the songs. Now she loves em. It's a shame that the only time young people pay much attention to older music unlessn they hear it on a Tik Tok. But I was really happy that my niece and her friend enjoyed most 😂 of my music.
Troppa nostalgia di loro, troppo bravi e che dire di Stipe... Troppo talentuoso. I REM sono veramente troppo, emozione pura❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

You're going to roll right over this one
Just roll me over, let me go

Take this as no, no, no, no, no
You bang, bang, bang, bang, bang
Then blame, blame, blame
You bang, bang, bang, bang, bang
It's not my thing, so let it go
If you could see yourself now, baby
The tables have turned, the whole world hinges on your swings
Your secret life of indiscreet discretions
I'd turn the screw and leave the screen
Don't point your finger
You know that's not my thing
You came to bang, bang, bang, bang, bang
To blame, blame, blame
Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang
It's not my thing, so let it go now
You've got a little worry
I know it all too well
I've got your number
But so does every kiss and tell
Who dares to cross your threshold
Happens on you way
Stop laying blame
You know that's not my thing
You know that's not my thing
You came to bang, bang, bang, bang, bang
Then blame, blame, blame
Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang
It's not my thing so let it go, you
Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang
Then blame, blame, blame
Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang
It's not my thing so let it go

Rub on me

Beat on me
Hit on me

This song makes me feel equally nostalgic and deeply sad. It's fucking beautiful. 💜
"The best band ever ! "
This song reminds me of why I love this band so much. So haunting with so much drive behind it!
That haunting is Buck's echo effect, but it'll just be our little secret. ;)
This song takes me back to better times. REM was such a huge part of my formative years. I was in the 6th grade when I heard Stand for the first time and fell in love.
My favorite Mike Mills bass line. Its "steady meandering" always seemed to capture the mood and spirit of the song so well that it's as if the song was built around it.
This is such an Incredible song!! I wish I could’ve gotten the chance to see it performed live.
There will never be another REM
ahh, the enchanting music of REM, and especially this album - Monster. Love the music of the 90's, REM, INXS, Midnight Oil. I really miss these bands live.
His voice is incredible!!
