On October 21, 2022, I went to Kamikochi to see the autumn leaves.
Kamikochi is a very popular hiking destination in Japan.
In Kamikochi, there are three main attractions: Taisho Pond, Kappa Bridge, and Myojin Pond.
You can stay at a hotel in Kamikochi, such as the Kamikochi Imperial Hotel, or in a nearby city like Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture.
There is a direct bus service from Tokyo.

I prefer public transport from Matsumoto to Kamikochi by train to Shin-Shimashima Station and transfer to a bus. I like the local train atmosphere.
The townscape is very atmospheric and wonderful!

I checked and there may not be any climbing equipment available for rent in Kamikochi.
If you walk between Taisho Pond and Myojin Pond shown in this video, walking shoes are sufficient as the path is not mountain climbing but hiking.
If it rains, you can probably buy shoe covers at THE PARKLODGE KAMIKOCHI near Kappa Bridge.

I went to Kamikochi on 1 November 2023, however due to my foot injury before leaving for Japan, I coild not walk the trail from Taisho Pond to Kappa Bashi. But I could see that the trail nearby Kappa Bashi is easy to walk on with plain sports shoes.
Thanks a lot for sharing your experience. We are also planning for day trip from Tokyo as accommodations are not available. Should we make reservations For the bus from sawarno parking to Kamikochi and Kamikochi to kappa bridge and return to Sawarno parking.

You say you were unable to book a hotel, when are you planning to go to Kamikochi?
Kamikochi is open from the end of April to mid-November.
We recently received an inquiry from someone who wanted to go to Kamikochi in November but could not book a bus.
I want to go to Kamikochi in mid October 2023. Does the leaves already start to turn yellow?

Generally, Kamikochi can only be visited from spring to fall.
Only serious climbers go there in winter.
I think you can't book a bus because the mountain is already closed in mid-November.

I'm curious, how long do you need to explore Kamikochi? I'm afraid I'm doing it as a day trip only
It is not easy to enjoy a day trip from Tokyo to Kamikochi.
There is a direct bus connection from Tokyo to Kamikochi, so if you leave Tokyo early in the morning and take a bus from Kamikochi back to Tokyo in the evening, it would be possible to make a day trip.
However, the long bus ride will be tiring and the time spent in Kamikochi will not be long.
In my case, I leave Tokyo early in the morning, take a train and a bus to Kamikochi, spend 5-6 hours in Kamikochi, and then take a train and a bus back to Tokyo again, which is quite tiring.
If possible, it would be better to spend one night in Kamikochi or in Matsumoto, a town near Kamikochi.

Sorry for the late reply. I arrived at Kamikochi at 11:45 am. It would be a very hard schedule to make a day trip to Kamikochi from Tokyo. It would be better to stay overnight in Kamikochi or in Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture.

it takes only 5:30 hours to go.. Definitely NOT a DAY trip.
