Nan Taylor is my favourite Tate character. I was working in a South London hospital and a miserable old woman, with the same accent, said "ooh blimey, take a look at these nurses, I've never seen such lazy articles" I laughed out loud, because I thought she was doing a Nan Taylor impersonation, then I realised the woman was the genuine article.
My grandma on my mother's side used to call the council the 'corporation' and her favourite of mine is how she used to say 'he's tapped that one, he wants certifying for the safety of all of us.." certifying was the old term for being sectioned under the mental health act.. She had a great sense of humour and she deliberately played up to the stereotype of grandma's and she'd say "do you want something to eat pet/petal or Sarmand?" (her nickname for Simon) and she'd say 'they're nice.. nice, I'll just make you a few.." she wouldn't take no for an answer, she'd give me a carrier bag full of Breakaway biscuits,/KitKat's/walkers ready salted crisps/some pink salmon and watercress and pickled cucumber slices or marmite sandwiches (made from an uncut farmhouse type loaf of bread and always lurpack butter, never margarine), I'd be handed a big slab of Burgess's dairy ice-cream, the best I've had, ever. So I'd have eaten a home cooked meal, with mug after mug of tea, roast beef and mustard sandwiches etc, be supplied with a bag of snacks to take home and she'd ask if I wanted some money for some chips on the short walk home.. I'd say "no thanks grandma" and I'd be handed anything up to a fiver for "some chips so you have something to eat on the walk home.." 😂😆🤣 She was not fazed by anything, like I was once caught in a slightly embarrassing situation when I was about 16, with my favourite magazines lined up against my bedroom skirting board, and I was going for it and probably on my knees with my tongue out of the side of my mouth in concentration 🤣🐉😂 and she walked in, saw me f*pping and immediately closed the door, and when she left to go home she just shouted up "do you want anything before I go? ok see you tomorrow" it was never mentioned again and we both just shrugged it off. Another time my uncle had not come out yet and his flatmate had made a move on my other uncle who was not happy about it and the flatmate moved to my grandparents for a short time before going home from university. I had no idea and I remember he came into the kitchen and asked if I wanted to play pool in a nearby pub, and my grandma was obviously protecting me and she answered every question for me before I could answer. She said "he doesn't like pool, do you Simon?" and when I was asked to play darts instead she told him "no Simon has never been interested in darts" and just a drink "no Simon is not a big drinker and he's meeting his girlfriend soon aren't you Simon?" I didn't have a girlfriend at that particular time if I remember correctly and I knew something was going on but she was keeping me from any thing happening (the flatmate was not much older than I was maybe 5-7 years because I was about 19 but he was no danger and he wasn't a predatory type of person). I found out why a short time later and looking back she was a brilliant grandma and a great woman. I owe a lot to her.
Yes, it's the anticipation. I tried to explain this to a friend of mine who complained about Catherine Tate's various sketches being 'repetitive'. She didn't get it.
I think Catherine Taylor is the funniest, most intelligent comedian and observer of Brits there has been for a long long time. i don't think she got the recognition she deserved. Totally agree with you 100% !!. Today's receptionists seems to look upon themselves as 'The Last Wall' between the public and the doctors and will do anything to prevent you from seeing one - I've lost count of the number of times I've had an argument with them over the years !.
