- We're thrilled to announce the brand new 4K restoration of John Guillermin’s Academy Award® Winning remake of iconic Hollywood classic, KING KONG (1976). Starring Jeff Bridges (The Big Lebowski, Crazy Heart, True Grit) and Jessica Lange (Tootsie, American Horror Story), and produced by Hollywood legend Dino de Laurentiis (Flash Gordon, Nights of Cabiria, Barbarella), this retelling of the classic monster adventure film went on to jointly win the Academy Award® for Best Visual Effects as well as receiving Academy Award® nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Sound. Jessica Lange was also honoured as Best new Actress for her role at the Golden Globes that same year.
Now restored in 4K for the first time, STUDIOCANAL will re-release the film across Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital release in the UK from November 23rd.
Fred Wilson (Charles Grodin), an employee of a large American oil company, has been charged with a mission to find new oil wells. With a chartered boat, he sets off on a journey to an uninhabited island in the South Pacific. On board is also a stowaway: the palaeontologist Jack Prescott (Jeff Bridges) has smuggled himself onto the ship, as he hopes to examine a rare species of monkey on this island. On the way, after a violent storm, the expedition also takes on board the shipwrecked Dawn (Jessica Lange), who is floating in a lifeboat at sea. When the ship anchors off the island, however, it turns out not to be as uninhabited as everyone once thought. The natives of the island perform a strange ritual to worship a larger-than-life ape named "Kong". As soon as they catch sight of the blonde Dawn, they decide they have found their perfect offering.

I have very fond memories of seeing this movie with my parents on it's premiere on Boxing Day 1976. I was 6 years old.

But on the other side, the darker photgraphy with a more dense black hide the fx´s imperfection(Maybe the problem is that historically the home edition of this films were too bright and they made the blue screen composition, matte painting and models very obvious).

I agree. It is too "in your face" and older movies did not need all this audio "decoration" because the script and movie was good enough.

Utterly abysmal color grading. It’s like someone pissed all over the screen. The whiplash of learning one of my favorite movies is getting a 4K release then seeing this is what it looks like was quite something. Shout Factory’s blu ray dances circles around this so-called “restoration”. I’m tired of older films getting this yellowization treatment.

With the premise this Trailer is tastelessly overdone and does not represent at all the actual Restoration seen on UHD, it's actually professionals who are tired of uncultured people who never saw a piece of 35mm film in their lives, and grown up with old horrendous electric telecined neutralized masters made for TVs, complaining about movies finally regaining the filmic chromas inherent in analog film.
How could anyone enjoy Shout Factory's version, which is a decades old telecined master that not only looks dreadful in terms of PQ in every conceivable way, but also completely revisionist to how this movie originally theatrically looked, is truly hard to comprehend.
There's literal countless identical-looking home-video versions of this movie already covering all formats, let for once the many enthusiast and people working in this industry alike who waited decades finally get their chance to watch a movie shot on film the way a movie shot on film is meant to be seen, without having to spend thousands of dollars on film prints.
Just enjoy the old, magenta, desaturated, lifeless, ancient looking TV versions you already own.

@@DyslexicGod I did'nt find the teal push in Basic Instinct too bad and First Blood and Cliffhanger needed better encodes but the colours I thought were ok. The 4K Sony release is slightly better than the studio Canal. The recent Hiventy restorations are decent but then they do there trademark yellow and teal colour grading.

This new color grading is garish revisionist history and not how the film was intended to look by the director or cinematographer.
More than ever physical media enthusiasts are the custodians and preservationists of these films, so it's important what is encapsulated is representative of the actual film fans grew up with - unedited, uncensored, and with any restoration in keeping with how the creators intended it. An accurate historical document which is respectful to Richard Kline’s original cinematography and color choices, which did not include the over saturation and heavy handed teal tones.

Well, I saw this 4K StudioCanal version. And sadly, I must say something is very wrong here. Day scenes looked okay? but the night scenes and even some indoor scenes looked way too dark(ugly). For example, when Kong comes for Dwan, it's almost impossible to see anything! So dark! And it wasn't like that in the cinema in 1976! Too often Blu-ray & 4K transfer makes the movie worse than it was in cinema or on DVD! It's very sad because I love-love-love 1976 King Kong! This movie has a huge nostalgic value to me. Great film! Jessica Lange: The hottest woman in 1976!
I bought it a couple days ago off Amazon, and Imo, it looks great. I can see everything perfectly day and night. The colors look fantastic. Not sure what your settings are, but I have a TCL 55 inch tv. If I had to rate the picture, I would give it a 9 out of 10.

I think it was actually 44 feet tall. I used to have the book "The Making of King Kong" and they detailed how they built it, had spec drawings, and discussed it's creation with those who engineered and built it. Very interesting stuff.

One of my all-time favorite films. This was an incredible trailer, however, when you had John Barry's iconic score to work with, the choice to go with this generic, cheesy music baffles me.
Not to mention the terrible cover art when you have John Berkey's beloved paintings. And don't get me started on the teal sunglasses color grading. Ugh.

I don’t mean to sound negative
But this remake sadly suffers for not having a lot happen on Skull island
It honestly should’ve been longer and had some more action /creature attacks on the island.
The flip side is that the other versions have TOO MUCH happening on the island and it detracts from Kong. We forget about him half the time.
LOVE this move and already own the Shout Factory blu ray release from a couple of years ago. Anyone know if this Studio Canal blu ray is going to be any different? Not sure if worth buying again. Any feedback let me know.
Look at any scene in this trailer side by side with your Shout Factory copy and the difference will be immediately noticeable. The yellow filter they implemented here looks horrible! Stick with your Shout Factory copy and pass on this one
Please Studiocanal, commission more 4K restorations from Silver Salt. Their 4K restorations look authentic!
Serpico, Red Sonja and King Kong that have been processed by other restoration companies have a false and revisionist colour grading with a distracting yellow or green tint.

The overdone grading seen in this Trailer doesn't match the incredible restoration found on the UHD, which is an absolutely stunning presentation of what a movie shot on film should look like. Naturally filmic chromas inherent in analog 35mm which have been lost for way too long in favor of ancient, neutralized, telecined masters made for TVs that plagued every home-video version before, including the Shout! Factory laughable release. About damn time.
