I'm half certain that it was able to even infect winver because it's pure win16 (NE. no stub here) for some reason beyond me It seems to already use USER!LoadString and kernel stuff dime-a-dozen (by ordinal.... it hurt to figure out, I had to use wine spec files to map ordinal->name manually) as the Windows 98 and copyright strings are both resources, so i don't think loading another module for the icon would have increased size too much. I shouldn't say that like it's even possible though, since well it's 16 bit and shell32 is a 32bit dll. Honestly wonder why with the crazy amount of NT4/NT5 porting that happened with 98 they never bothered to port the winver from the NT tree, which is basically a fancy ShellAbout(). Not like the shell32 98 (least SE) ships with doesn't export it, since it exports both A/W versions.
Interestingly with ME they finally did go ahead and just use ShellAbout() for winver, so whatever NT stuff is in ME probs is late RC/possibly final. The only reason I can think of for why they didn't do it earlier is that even Second Edition's NT5 ports are only up to NT5/Win2k RC1/RC2 level (pretty close to where Xbox branched off, to check off the "Weird Ass Trivia Nobody Needed To Know" bingo card, as unscrubbed branding in some exes does identify itself as Win2k.. I feel sorry for the poor soul who had to merge ntverp.h in). But honestly it's probably just because nobody gave a fuck and didn't bother (Which answers quite a lot about why Windows is the way it is).
If you do some digging on Tumblr you can find out that Dan probably cut rogueamp off due to the fact that he was an awful person. Rogueamp probably then left the internet after that.

on XP i think it infects maybe 16bit executables, but i believe that only infects WOW subsystem. I don't know.

Now I'm wondering if it's possible to run Tentacle on Windows XP through NTVDM.
Although Tentacle wouldn't infect a lot of programs, due to most of Windows XP programs being 32-bit.
Except NTVDM will not allow this to happen. Direct write = NTVDM triggers a hang and error box.
