In my 'What is Pay to Win' video I made the statement that Dragons Dogma 2 had claimed to be a game without fast travel, and now it is selling fast travel in the shop exclusively.
This was incorrect, the designer claimed fast travel was only needed if the overworld travel in the game was boring, and the majority of the items in the shop are achievable in game.
In this video we will go over every DD2 microtransaction item and see what they do, to clear up the confusion.
Thank you for pointing out my mistake.
In a previous video I made an incorrect claim about the fast travel system in the game Dragon's Dogma 2. This video is an acknowledgement and apology for that incorrect information and a more thorough look at what is actually in the cash shop.
Many of you called me out on the mistake, thank you for holding me to a high standard as a content creator, but a few of the more extreme personal messages could probably be toned down a bit.
Those extreme personal messages can be safely ignored and treated like they never existed. No need to take them seriously or be affected by them.

really appreciate you being upfront about this. i was curious after seeing the overwhelmingly negative reviews on the steam page and did a little digging myself. the majority of users upset with the game seemed to think that integral game mechanics were being locked behind paywalls, while a small minority of users pointing out that this wasn't true were being hidden through downvotes n stuff. the fact that you didn't catch it is at least somewhat understandable, as it took me an hour or two of research to really get to the bottom of things. nbd josh, thanks for being a good dude.
(i still think day-one mtx in an unfinished single player game is shitty and unethical, but that's not exactly equivalent)

I mean yeah but just don't buy them? The mtx thing is being so overblown, the game is great but the actual issues are the PC optimization and a few questionable design decisions such as the no "new game" option.
Microtransactions will never go away and are only going to get worse in the future. This is because we gave corporations an inch and they took the entire mile. Zero tolerance for mtx is the only cure.

The irony of the dramatic responses you have received is that another point you made in that video covers this perfectly.
These purchases in games are such a slippery slope and have become normalized so much that we have begun to argue the semantics of something being not that bad or overly predatory in nature rather than arguing pay to win/progress at all.
Dude gamers had their chance to get rid of this 💩10-14 years ago and didn’t. So now they’re here and they’re not going anywhere so why waste my time? If people don’t buy the 💩 en mass they aren’t gonna go any further with it, and if they do people will simply not play, like me with a damn game u need a subscription to play FUCK THAT BS, that is literally pay to play

@@MenrvaS Even if they're all obtainable in game or just QoL increases, in game purchases inherently make your content worse for not buying it. If they felt the need to add them, then they're saying it's a helpful feature or useful to have earlier and they're making the choice that you have to pay extra for it rather than making the game better by making it baseline.
@@Zillionman2010 The game already made the baseline into the standard game, and the deluxe edition is the luxury option with a bit head start.
If you want to support them more, you get a bit of help or minor special items in return. If not, you can just enjoy the base game.
This is not a live service game. It will not going to make your experience any worse than knowing nothing about the game.
And if by worse you mean 2kg less camping kit, you can have 3 pack mules. Weight is never an issue to begin with.

There are not so many serious news channels out there, and some of them are tangled up in bs, CZcams and non-youtube ones.
I know that if he feels like it he can push out content that is not by the mold of the character he plays, and that flexibility is the only thing I can give thumbs up for, and trying to be there when happens, or fits for the image of the channel. If it's for the latter then I probably don't have much connection.

"try your best to not put your love of a game before your care of a person" was a great thing to say and more people really need to listen to this advice not just for gaming, but for a lot of things. Also, the fact that you even put out a video saying that you were wrong shows that you have more integrity than most content creators.
It isn't love for a game...the game has been out for 1 day. Nobody "loves" or has loyalty to this game. Huge respect for not only acknowledging that you were wrong, but also calling out people who went over the line in a respectful manner at the same time. One of the big reasons that a large amount of us do have so much trust in you.
Maybe he shouldn't yap about things he doesn't even do even BASIC RESEARCH ON. What a clown. No one should trust his content after seeing how well he verifies information before spreading it to tens of thousands of people. It takes all of 2 to 3 minutes to research this properly and find out the truth of the MTX situation, yes even right at launch. This video doesn't change that. Just as an additional point, this video has 217k views while his first one has 154k views. So if he's trying to get away with a bad apology and hide it in a less viewed video. he's failing miserably. If, on the other hand, he's actually being an adult and admitting when he's wrong to his audience and asking for forgiveness, he's doing it right. I think it's apparent which of the situations this is.

I got a good laugh imagining the people typing some of the comments I saw like "people look up to you josh, how could you do this". As if making a mistake about teleportation in a video game was having a catastrophic impact on peoples lives.
Everyone gets unhinged commenters no matter the topic. Josh just made a 5 sec clip about the game on a video about another topic so he gets a pass compared to people making 10+ min video without the most basic fact checking.
Well the claim does have some massive red flags. Money gating Fast Travel as a whole is definitely a bad look if true, which it isn't in DD2. People just want others to still give Dragons Dogma 2 a chance since the core game is quite good (as long it's to your taste of course).
A shame tho that it's terrible PC launch performance and Capcoms terrible monetization is tying it down.
I like Josh and understand his mistake. DD2 2-step fast travel style is definitely an uncommon type.

It has an impact on his credibility as a gaming content creator. Echoing misinformation without doing the research is a bad look no matter what your deflection mechanism is (diminution in this case).

Capcom is letting you buy any of the rewards you can get in the deluxe version without forcing you to buy the whole bundle.
This is a pro consumer choice.

Not all misinformation is the same. Pushing false information about certain microtransactions available in a $70 single player game is not on the same level as spreading misinformation about vaccines or climate change for example, which - judging by some of these comments - you'd expect him to have declared 5G is causing covid or something.

Oh yeah 100%, the amount of misinformation is staggering. People are even manifesting random shit like saying you can buy "character slots." when, no, you can just backup your save to have multiples, even consoles have that feature alongside being able to just use multiple profiles on one machine.

@@BarokaiRein had people in two entirely different Discord groups, claim the MTX were Pay-2-win, without actually explaining how that was the case, they just posted what others said.
Just another tidbit of context for one of the cash shop items: the Explorer's Camping Kit. It is indeed lighter than most standard camping kits but it is not the lightest camping kit, that title goes to the Elite Camping Kit which cannot be obtained through MTX. That being said you have to either progress decently through the story or go really far out of your way early game in order to obtain Elite Camping Kits, whereas for deluxe edition owners the Explorer's Camping Kit is given right at the start of the game (and I would assume it works the same for the MTX versions of these items). This and the extra Portcrystal represent the two most noticeable benefits that can be gleamed from the cash shop imo. The Wakestones are a convenience but given the extremely frequent autosaves and the fact that Wakestones are actually pretty easy to come by once you get past the very early game I wouldn't call them p2w by any means.
The Rift Crystals are effectively irrelevant because RC as a currency is just a lot less useful in this game. Repairing broken Riftstones is comically inexpensive, bringing along higher level pawns decreases the amount of xp you get (and they're really not stronger from a practical sense outside of the first few levels when they're very cheap anyway), the inclination dust (bought with RC from Johnathan's sleazy cousin) is pretty useless because the inclination system has been absolutely gutted and most importantly there is no cursed item equivalent to sink RC into late game (one of the few mechanics that I'm happy was removed from the sequel). Also quick note, the original game (in which Rift Crystals were a much more important currency than they currently are in DD2) released in 2012 actually had RC bundles purchasable with real money on (among other "DLCs" released within the first few months of the game's life cycle) and added more purchasable bundles when the DLC released the next year.
All in all I'd say that the MTX in the sequel is overall less impactful than that in the original. Some "DLC" highlights from the original:
- The Debilitator Weapon Pack, which introduced some of what would prove to be the strongest weapons in the game by plonking them into the player's storage at the start of the game (including some legitimate best in slot contenders like Force Hatchet, Iraklis, Legion's Might and Caged Fury)
- The Divine and Demon's Protection Armour packs, which introduced a collection of armour sets that granted unprecedented damage reduction from their respective elemental damage types, but increased the damage taken from other elements. Over a decade later and these are still a no brainer when fighting specific elemental dragons
- The Rift Crystal packs mentioned earlier: 2000 RC for $1, 15000 RC for $6, an additional 2000 RC + a better inventory for one of the shops in the starting town for $1 and when the DLC launched additional packs of 2000 RC for $1, 5000 RC for $2 and 30000 RC for $5 which could be purchased repeatedly were launched alongside it. Given the massive RC sink in the form of cursed items that were introduced in this DLC, the annoyance of farming them in the quantities required and the surprise mechanic adjacent nature of the cursed items themselves, I'm pretty confident Capcom made a killing on these

I got called a liar for saying that I couldn't restart or make a new character, people pointed out I could dig I to the files and delete my save game to restart. Seeing as how I have never had to do that in any game I have ever played, and there was no way to do so from the in game menu, I stood my ground. But even me, a nobody, received dozens of comments calling me all sorts of names. 😢 People can be cruel when defending the multi billion dollar company they adore.

Josh once revealed the statistics of his viewers, and the vast majority I believe were mid 20s - mid 30s. Most of his core audience, especially those who sit through his longer videos, are not teenagers.

Hey friendo. Your videos are very fun to watch. I mostly only play ESO, but it's interesting to see how you dive into so many different (often broken) MMOs and shed light on weird obscure games that have barely seen the light of day. It's crazy how you could put so much time and care into playing so many games so often, and that's a level of dedication that I don't see on CZcams all too much.
I'm torn on this. On the one hand, there are people that deserve the additional effort you put into issuing this apology. On the other hand, considering the messages you got and some of the comments I see here, it clearly shows that the DD 2 fanboys collectively have a stick up their ass, and it is not your responsibility to pull it out.

The best move would be to do his research in the first place, however. There is a misinformation campaign going on to trash the game, the fact that Josh fell for it is a hit to his credibility. Apologizing only salvages part of that lost credibility, not all of it. Failing to do your research when covering a major news story is rough.

Misinformation in a thesis is WAY WAY WAY worse than a typo. The way Josh corrects himself and makes a new video with the correct information is honestly the minimum acceptable, more people should be like that.

In the first video I said to myself: "oh crap, DD2's monetization is shit". Now after the correction I still think the monetization is shit, but with a different shit smell and looks.
The limit on characters is another thing thats MEH. All those things by themselves would not be that much of an issue, but together they compound.
Play the first game.
You'd see why. You gain nothing by making another character. Your one character can already be every vocation with the swap of a weapon/gear.
This is a straight improvement over ddA where not having good stats when going from warrior -> sorc -> sorc -> archer...made it hard to play anything besides 1 or 2 vocations with your character.
I just don't see why its an issue.

I went into complete media blackout regarding DD2 when it dropped because it was a game I was very excited for. I was very surprised to see the whole MTX discourse pop-up once I finished the game, since never in the game DLCs/MTX are mentioned/needed, and the whole "controversy" ended up being 99% absolute and blatant lies about buying fast travel, character slots and other mental gymnastics. A lot of the misinformation comes from people never playing the first title and not understanding how the fast travel worked in that one, so that mechanic carrying to DD2 was only understood by "veterans" it seems. Disappointing to see lies spread, but happy to see the game doing so well.

@@bomber66aNo, not really. Rift crystals are insanely easy to come by, and even spending them fairly frequently I make far more than I use. Port crystals being in the shop is mildly annoying, but you can also buy them in the game and find them for free in several places. There's no adverts for the micro transactions in game, or even in the menu, you literally have to specifically go to the store page to even find them. If you don't like the availability, don't buy them, it's that simple. Absolutely nothing in the shop is impossible to receive in game through a bit of footwork. No, the cash shop doesn't annoy me. Not done this way.
I know you didn't say it with malice or specific intent to continue a narrative. This video is why I still trust and believe in you as a content creator, gamer, and human. You did not let your mistake stay and you are still the best Brit in a vest.

whether p2w or not, it's garbage practice of having mtx in a single player game. in australia, the standard version of dd2 is $107.96aud (that's already a lot), from what i can tell this only includes the base game, no extra guaranteed future dlc, no free giga updates or anything, just the game, then the mtx range from $1.50 to $7.50, that is absurd. $108 plus nickel and diming me on mtx in a single player game is unacceptable IMO

I feel like we need to re-brand "pay to win" to "pay for advantage". Not only it's outrageous to put a cash shop in 70$ single player game but people often ask "what is pay to win?" or "what are you winning?" Saying "pay for advantage" instead is unambiguous and conveys a clear message. Yes you can get most paid items in Dragon's Dogma trough gameplay but buying the DLCs provides you with an advantage by giving them early. It's like paying for cheats in a single player game which is pretty ridiculous and shouldn't be defended

Only Capcom have been doing these types of post-launch revenue for nearly a decade, they have a pretty good idea as to where the line is and how not to cross it. Also, Capcom just recently announced pay standard increases while most other companies were laying people off. Maybe Capcom has earned the leeway until they go full-on Shadow of War.

In DD1 it was an ingame store that mainly sold Pawn related items, with your main Riftshard income being
having your pawn be used by other players (whenever someone released your pawn after use they were updated with your next rest, increasing their experience (no EP but AI Experience in how quests work/enemy weakpoints ect) and bringing along a riftstone reward according to their usage and at times items gifted by the other player.
You could also get some minor Riftstone rewards for quests or as monsterdrops
They later introduced the option to buy Riftstones for real money in the form of DLC where you got Quests to search specific locations to get them.
Is it the same here just with having the buyoption from the getgo or what change made it so bad specificly?

When MTX is put in, it is usually because the developers deliberately created a problem or inconvenience for the MTX to look attractive enough to solve. Now, without confirmation from the developers it cannot be definitively said the MTX in DD2 is like the MTX in 99% of games with MTX existing to encourage players to spend money on an experience that was deliberately made worse to encourage purchase of MTX, but it would be foolish to think DD2 is an exception.

My 2 cents as a silent viewer is that only a small minority of your audience comments and it is usually those who have a hard time withholding emotion. The vast majority of your audience was not swayed or impacted whatsoever by the mistake but is refreshing to see a directly honest.

Dragon's Dogma has a, well, dogmatic following. Some people were just looking for an excuse or were upset someone as prominent as Josh spread "misinformation." It doesn't excuse personal threats, but I at least understand it. It doesn't help either that the MTX stuff has been so overblown. I don't like a lot of them either, but people are just lying to make the game fail, or are just stupid like the always online thing

@@darkmessiah757 Outrage gains the most views and attention (and hence revenue) for media outlets, so making a "small" lie that sounds reasonable that will drive huge outrage is substantially more profitable for them, despite spreading misinformation.
It's the unfortunate reality of our world and it's unlikely to change massively anytime soon. Remember to always analyse any source you find online and don't take it at its word without corroboration and a bit of scepticisim.

The internet discourse surrounding DD2 has been pretty rough, to say the least. It makes me sad, because the passion behind Itsuno's words and work is self-evident in what is an incredible game that I have not wanted to put down since release. It's simultaneously depressing and maddening that Capcom's poor business practices towards the consumer and failure to optimize the game for release have destroyed any discourse about the game itself, a far more interesting subject for analysis.
All this aside, it's genuinely appreciated that you made this video, and I hope the comments ease up as well. Thanks for being such a solid tuber.
Developers also hold part of the responsibility by continuing to work for these companies. That being said the misinformation sorrounding this game coming from people leading a crusade against MTX is just horrible and mistepresentative.

@@Rocker-1234Anticheat that only exists to protect the microtransaction shop. So the existence of microtransactions is actively degrading the experience for players whether they choose to buy anything or not.
