    So I take it everyone who reads 1984 goes here to see exactly how the rhyme goes. It was driving me nuts only having the lyrics with no melody.

      Thank you for that Fernando! There were some words there I didn't quite catch.
      It's a little different from the scarier version we sang when we played the O&L game at children's parties in the 1950s. It was a scary game!

    Fun fact: the song oranges and lemons was first written in 1744 and sung by Tommy Thumb as a nursery rhyme was a way of remembering the topography of London by a widely illiterate population. People would have associated the bells and the churches with what happened in that part of town. Eventually it became a rhyme and there is evidence of it being a dance in 1655.

      Another fun fact: many of the bells mentioned were cast at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry (near the Aldgate East tube station), which also cast the famous American Liberty Bell.

    Huh, so in this earlier version there were less bells included and no mention of the candle or chopper - perhaps it was written before the other belltowers were put up and had become associated with executions?

    • @claireeyles7560
      @claireeyles7560 Před 3 lety +8

      All of the churches mentioned existed at the time of the song's earliest printing, which was 1744. I believe the idea that the song has anything to do with executions comes from the addition of the last candle and chopper lines, but the earliest known version that includes that comes from 1840. The added lines to the song do form part of a children's singing game, that was popular in places like England and Australia even up until the modern day in some areas. It is possible that the lines were made up by children themselves as part of the game, and that they then ended up becoming synonymous with the song - although that is mere conjecture. It does say something to the enduring appeal of the song and the game associated with it, that over a hundred years after it began to be played it still remained one of the most popular children's singing games in the playground of my primary school (in the 1970s).
