I commuted between Barrie and Toronto for almost 15 years- while I'm glad the have the Go train option there are some cons that people should be aware of:
    1. If you use the north end station the trip takes 1hr 37 minutes. Don't fool yourself into thinking this isn't a long time because the house prices are so much better than Toronto- due to the fact that the chairs on a Go train face each other you can't stretch out your legs at all for much of the trip- when I've done short trips (ie 30-45 minutes) that isn't a big deal but after sitting like that for more than an hour both ways I am really uncomfortable. (On the plus side you have washrooms which you won't have if stuck in traffic)
    2. The Go only gets you to downtown TO- if you work anywhere that is not within the downtown core go transit is really is not feasible. And the Go bus service is not a solution for getting to the city either unless you want to take 2 + hr convoluted trips through the towns south of Barrie and change buses in Newmarket. It's not fun.
I do think the snow is the biggest con, not just because you have to do the driveway (which is a pain and eats a lot of time and energy from an already packed day if you are committing) but because driving in the winter can be so stressful. You will definitely have a few days every winter when you will have a hard time getting up hills due to ice, or will have such bad visibility due to blowing snow you can't see the exit
Another thing is that the 400 typically gets shut down 3 or 4 times a year due to jacknifed tractor trailers and accidents. When this happens you are screwed; there is no alternative way to get to the city that won't already be overrun by other commuters trying to get home. It can easily take 4 hours plus to get home in this situation (the worst trip I ever had was leaving Toronto at 3:15 to 'beat the storm' and not arriving home until 12:30 am(!); That was a terrifying drive.
Another thing is that often the weather in Toronto will be completely fine on days when it is completely horrible in Barrie, so do not be surprised when you show up hours late for work and your bosses and co-workers are skeptical of your excuse because Toronto has blue skies. This happens a lot as winter can in late October or November in a serious way in Barrie while in Toronto it doesn't even really start to snow until late December or January.

Coming to Barrie in July not because of all the summer fun but because We love snow, winter activities like ice fishing, snowmobiles and skiing and nothing like that to do in Toronto GTA over winter other than museum, sport teams and theatre which I can go see if I need. Plenty of golf, motorcycle roads and best fishing and boating in Barrie and area.

Great video! How would you compare Barrie's level of community participation to Orillia? (Orillia being a bit far for GTA commuters)
