Alejandro González Iñárritu Interview on writing The Revenant and Birdman - 10 Lessons from the Screenplay. Oscar winning Screenwriter Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu talks about his writing process and directing tips.
01- Creating a meaningful movie is like writing a poem while riding a rollercoaster. You need to both explore and present amazing metaphysical ideas in a unique form while also wrestling with the demands of the real world.
02 - Emotional certainty of a story event or a character’s emotion is more important than the truth. Truth is always questionable and is different for everybody who witnessed a certain event.
03 - Inarritu co-wrote 'Birdman' with three friends and the result was an oscar-winning screenplay. Try a collaboration approach when you get bored of your own voice. Don’t think of collaboration as ‘losing’ your voice, think of it as ‘enhancing’ your voice.
04 - There are different levels of storytelling. In the example of 'The Revenant', on the surface, there is a basic story of adventure, survival and revenge. But from that extreme physical experience, a spiritual and meaningful dimension develops.
05 - The right space with the right light makes a beautiful film. Use real locations and natural light. Make your camera capture a true canvas and try to paint your movie like a real artist.
06 - Should you know the ending before you start writing? The best process is that at first, you don’t know the ending. Have fun writing, exploring and go where the story leads you. But remember, the ending has to be unpredictable, but inevitable.
07 - You need to truly understand the dramatic objective of each scene, character motivations, and the emotions being portrayed to get the best out of your work. The only way to transfer that to your cast and crew is rehearsal and repetition.
08 - The movie is made by thousands of big and small decisions. As a screenwriter and director, be honest and personal with your work. The small artistic choices you make will create the soul of your film that the audience will analyse and admire.
09 - Give your locations character. A location can be the antagonist, the obstacle in a scene. You can use your location to represent a broader, deeper meaning. Different locations can represent sequences or acts in your story.
10 - Every screenplay has different requirements in terms of presenting story events. In the case of ‘The Revenant’, all the scenes had to be played out in real-time for the audience to really experience the details of the protagonist’s struggle to survive.

The first screenwriting tip that innaritu gave was actually kubrick's quote"anyone who has ever been previliged to direct a film knows that ,although it can be like trying to write WAR AND PEACE in a bumper car in a amusement park ,When you finally get it right, there are not many joys in life that can equal The feeling.
Fun fact:innaritu is huge fan of tarkovsky's work😂😂

There is no comparison between Tarkovsky & Kubrick. Period. True cinema lover will learn from both of them among other great film makers.

You dont understand what he tried to tell about writing a poem in a roller coaster. He meant its similar if he direct and produce a movie in the same time. Because you have to manage both financial issues and at the same time you need creative space. Riding roller-coaster = producing , write poem = directing 🙏
