Helicopter POV Flight: Autumn at Mission Ridge & Wenatchee

- COME FLY WITH ME as I take a flight in the Wenatchee area to show off the autumn colors. This is the cockpit POV version of my Autumn at Mission Ridge & Wenatchee flight, so you'll be able to reference the instruments as I talk about them. For an unobstructed view of my flight with the same narration, check out my "nose cam" version of this flight, which can be found at • Helicopter Nosecam Fli...
Some notes about this video:
Start to 4:20 - Yes, the carbon monoxide detector light is on during the beginning of this flight. I had been idling on the ramp for a while before the flight and when the wind blows just the right (or wrong?) way, it blows enough exhaust into the cockpit to trigger that very sensitive detector. I had opened the main (front) vent prior to starting the video and later, at 3:20, opened the vent on my side door. The light went off at around 4:20 and I closed that side vent. It really was cold!
9:50 - Hear the difference in the sound of the helicopter? I've reduced power and slowed down and what you're hearing is called "blade slap." It goes away when I pick up speed beyond around 80 knots as I start my descent.
12:40 - I'm descending at 1700 feet per minute! That's about the same as an autorotation.
14:30 - The top end of Pitcher Canyon is on my right.
15:08 - Sorry about the throat clearing sound. I thought I edited them all out.
19:30 - There is no control tower at Wenatchee. Pilots use the Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF) to report location and intentions in flight. This is NOT required but is highly advisable. (Technically, a radio is not required at all for Part 91 operations at Wenatchee.)
20:15 - Yes, I can make what's called a "quick stop" or turn very sharply away from the runway to avoid traffic there. I always look both ways and make a call before crossing the runway. If a plane is landing or taking off, I'll usually alter my course to pass behind it.
About Me and the Helicopter
- I have been flying for about 20 years. My nearly 4,000 hours of flight time is in Robinson R44, Robinson R22, and Bell 206L (Long Ranger) helicopters.
- The helicopter is a 2005 Robinson R44 Raven II -- the same one that appears in the photo at the beginning of the video. You can learn more about them here: robinsonheli.com/r44-specific... I own this helicopter. It is the third helicopter I've owned since 2000.
- My helicopter has ADS-B Out and is picked up by radar facilities. You can see my track for recent flights on Flightradar24: www.flightradar24.com/data/ai... This is a great site for tracking any almost any flight, including the airlines.
About the Video
- The video was recorded with a pair of GoPro Hero 7 cameras (amzn.to/2Lxyzwl). This view comes from a camera mounted on the bar between the two front seats, which is part of the helicopter's frame, using a MyPilotPro (mypilotpro.com/shop/?wpam_id=13) Helicopter Mount (mypilotpro.com/product/helico...) in conjunction with a few customized RAM mount components. (I'll do a show and tell about my camera mounts in another video.) The other camera contributed ambient sound, which includes wind, engine, and rotor noise, from the camera's built-in speaker and has been incorporated into this video at 25% normal volume.
- Narration was done using a Røde Podcaster microphone (amzn.to/2IFnbNr) connected to a Macintosh. I recorded the narration while I was watching the video in the editing software because the in-flight audio feed did not work.
- The video was edited on a Macintosh using Screenflow software. Learn more about it here: www.telestream.net/screenflow...
- The intro music is by Bob Levitus, famed "Dr. Mac." You can find him here: www.boblevitus.com/

Not boring. Please don't stop vlogs. Love them.
The scenery is spectacular!! The colors of the trees is beautiful!! That river is like glass!!
The Columbia river in this area has a set of reservoirs... I mean it is a river, but it can seem very very calm if the Rock Island Dam doesn't have a its spillways open.
I never thought you can fit such an experience into just 22 minutes. Wow!
After watching you for so long, I could probably fly your pattern building on vfr memory.. always a pleasure to join your ride.. Thanks.
Thank you for taking us along. What a beautiful playground you have to fly in. I love the mountains but never seen them in person. And one other note you fly very well. Enjoy your fall season see you again soon!
I love your videos and i appreciate the effort and the passion you put into it. Bravo !
I am having so much fun watching your videos. Thanks, Maria!
Later in the video I can see the helicopter shadow on the mountains! So cool!!
The view of the dash is excellent 👌
Beautiful scenery! Maria- none of your "fly-with-me" videos are wasted on my eyes; Enjoying each one more & more. Thank you so much, for taking the time & $$ to share with us! (ps- living in a nearby town, I'm blessed to know the areas you refer to & the terrain. Spectacular to now see them from this perspective! Yes- Wenatchee is a lovely city and worth the 1hr drive to get FRESH-from-the-orchard Apples each Fall).
The narration was great, so don't apologize you did awesome. Thanks for sharing your video with us.
Tamarack- North American Larch Same tree : ) I love them!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the ride!
Maria, That was an awesome video!
I think you should use the (voice over) all the time!
Much more interesting..plus, You get to relax and sip on a glass of wine.
Thank you so much.
Maria, I was on vacation when you made this video, but sure glad I found it, what a beautiful flight, thanks much!
Thanks for the video... Love the fall colors & the post flight narration. Until the next one...
Looking forward to this year's flights and videos!
Very scenic and well presented
Beautiful video! I just came across this video. Autumn in the eastern cascades is absolutely stunning.
Lovely flight. Thanks for sharing!
Wow, your camera picks up the sound so well. Beautiful colors
Great flight and great narration, thanks for sharing!
I loved the narration and the scenery and the flight, well everything I guess... :)
Very beautiful town and lovely scenic flight. Very Well Narrated as well 👌🏻
Gosh, the view of those trees!!!😊
Great video and narration thanks!
Never boring to listen to your narration! These flights are always putting me in kind of a trance. The beautiful autumn foliage is a treat. Thanks for the flight!
Thanks so much! Glad you liked it.
FlyingMAir That was a quick response! I just watched the nose cam version. It is nice if you want to see the area unobstructed, but part of the fascination of the cockpit view is looking over your shoulder and at the instruments. With a printout at my side I can see how they are graduated and check on the flight status. For me that is part of the fun! Have a perfectly nice day and thanks again, Maria!
This is awesome flight!! To freedom on the nature!
Thank you for sharing and telling us about your flight, I try to watch all your flights, I absolutely love your videos even if there is no talking so please keep them coming. Bob from Nova Scotia Canada.
I loved this trip, thankyou.
Very nice Maria. I knew the Wenatchee area was known for cherries and apples. Didn't realize the mountain terrain and fall color. Thanks for the flight !
spectacular colours so beautiful
It was a gorgeous day. So glad I flew that day; the colors disappeared within a week after a hard frost.
You know, I think that how ever you want to do your videos is fine. Whenever you fly, I’ll watch. Thank you.
What! A! Beautiful! Flight! 😘
Thank you for the wonderful flight. Coming from a tropical country, this vlog is awesome.
Well done. Not boring at all. Keep it up!
Wow amazing view
Don't apologize for the "after narration." I liked it VERY much. For a sightseeing vid like this one, it may be superior to an in-flight narration. I feel that this is one of your best vids. THANKS so much.
I am so glad I discovered your Channel today. As you were turning south up squilchuck, I literally not figuratively I literally could see my house I live just a golf shot away from Apalachee. I'll be checking out these videos the next couple weeks.
all your vids are great, thanks Maria! :-)
Thanks!
Wondered about something in the video, checked the description, wasn't disappointed. 👍
Great video as always!!
thanks for the timestamps in the description box, very helpful!
Another enjoyable video, thank you.
Great vid. Wow The fall colors.
The colors were amazing that day. I'm so glad I flew when I did. Autumn is pretty much over here now.
Super video Maria! What a nice sunny day, great scenery! Love your leather jacket, ha.
That jacket is VERY old. I think I got it before I started flying!
My wife grew up in Wenatchee, and she was just thrilled to see this flight. She lived at 405 N. Chelan. She also lived at 2125 S. Majestic.
First time to see a helicopter fly, landscapes are amazing love it, keep it up.
First time seeing one of your videos, Beautiful area I enjoyed the narration.
Th aks very much!
Love this camera angle!
Awesome!! Good job!! Thank you 😊
Loved it! thank you!
Maria love the video keep up the good work Cheers Rexie
Fantastic video 👍🏻thank you
Im from Zillah and I am going to flight school in the spring. You are a major inspiration for me and I have been really enjoying watching your videos. Its so nice to see home from the perspective of a heli. Much Love.
Thanks very much! Good luck with your training and fly safe!
15:42 This is Dry Gulch and the earthen dam where Cannon Mine used to be. No. 1 Cyn is north of No. 2 Cyn.
Great videos! I enjoy watching them and the views of our beautiful valley.
Wow thank you so much I love what you do,I'm 74 and always wanted to fly a helicopter I'm in Glen Innes Australia I love your flights
Nice video! Thanks for sharing.
This is extremely relaxing.
Glad you think so! Sometimes I like to make videos of the scenery go by with just some mellow music.
Great Video Maria. Greetings from Germany!
We hike up to Lake Clara and Lake Marion first week in September , Second week of September is when it usually snows just like clockwork
What a great video and I love your voice
Cockpit view... always!❤
Good memories after watching this. We used to Jeep Mission Peak Ridge long long ago. Our family friend used to manage the Ellensberg Airport I have flew from Ellensburg to Wenachee many times never in helicopter only a Piper C3 .
You have a awesome life....lol love your vids. Fan from .st.louis.
Salut tank you vidéo magnifique super bravo
Ever fly over Stevens or Snoqualmie Passes? They too, are an incredible *BURST* of color, this time of year...and transend into breathtaking "Winter Wonderlands" in the Winter.
Yes. Gorgeous. Flew over the falls once, too. Didn't even realize it until I looked down and saw them.
I actually like the commentary!
i did like the narration
I honestly liked the narrative over the video more than you give it credit. I think you made it very interesting even though it is not what you normally do. You would probably be great at giving tours. This is the first of your videos I've seen and now I am on to more.
Oh, gosh, I've been doing tours for 20 years. Not a lot of them, but enough! Glad you liked it. I hope you watch some more -- I have over 100 videos online here!
Great video, they are seriously enjoyable! My GoPro crashes from time to time when filming (it freezes too) but restarting the app usually fixes it.
Awesome.
Im stoned watching this with my new phone this is amazing
It's amusing to me that the video has one Thumbs Down BEFORE IT HAS GONE PUBLIC. I have to assume that it's either a hater or some whiny baby who doesn't want to wait for the premiere.
Here's a newsflash: ALL of my videos are uploaded before they go public. It's just the premieres that make that obvious. One of the benefits of being a channel supporter or sponsor is that you get to see some or all of the videos BEFORE they go public. It's my way of thanking the folks who help cover the cost of making these videos.
Yeah, there always has to be at least one jacka-- in the bunch. Keep up the cool videos!👍
Don't worry about it. You can't please everyone. You have a great ratio of likes to dislikes.
FlyingMAir I wonder if it’s an accidental click
Would not worry about it, there is nothing not to like in your videos.
Yeah, that's the ticket! An accidental click! ;-)
Maria, at 2:30 on this video, you are headed toward Squilchuck Canyon. Those two steps to the left of center are more of the slides that have happened over the years in this area.
Yes those yellow trees are Larch. Tamarack is another name for other areas. I have 3 from this area planted in my Tacoma yard.
Howdi Maria just slap great pics. ov that beavtiful Western WA .Country,---keep-it-up.
Actually, I thought the separate narration worked out quite well :)
Riding in a helicopter is a dream of mine. This is as close as I can come.
I setup my widescreen display with both videos playing at the same time. Little tricky to get the timing correct after that best way to view it.
It's actually the same video editing file so if you start them at exactly the same time, they should sync up.
Now I’ve seen this one. Hard to say which I enjoyed the most. The view from outside was awesome, but the pilot in me is more accustomed to the cockpit view. Guess I’m not much help. BTW are you going to be making videos while you are flying out of town. Good luck with the annual.
Yes, I'll be making videos throughout the winter, although I'm not sure if I can release one a week. I'll do my best.
Hi Maria, What a delightful video. As someone who grew up there this is one of the magical times of year. The Tamaracks turning yellow just make those hills so beautiful. (Yes, they are Western Tamarack or Western Larches regardless of what Wikipedia says. Here is a good link: www.conifers.org/pi/Larix_occidentalis.php Such an unusual tree in the area. Your flying up Chumstick was just beautiful. Thanks for the trip! Do it again once the hills get that beautiful green velvet in mid-spring.
Thanks for this link. And yes, I'm looking forward to spring when everything is green again!
Like the narration track. It's just as good as live. (plus you don't have to fly and talk)
Oh, believe me, I can talk and do just about anything. LOL. But thanks!
@@FlyingMAir You are welcome! I very much enjoy your videos and your narration as well. I also found your blog and see you are a good writer as well as a talker!
A question: Back in the mid 90's I won a raffle and was able to take a one hour helicopter class. One of the things that stuck with me is-"A helicopter is never in flight. It is in a controlled descent."
Whoever told you that doesn't know much about helicopters. Helicopters fly just like airplanes do -- with wings. But rather than requiring forward speed to lift the wings, helicopters spin their wings for lift.
What that person might have said is that helicopters don't want to fly. They want to crash. That's true.
Sounds like a glider as even when you're in lift, you're descending through it. . if that makes sense. Think of walking down a stairs in glass box but that glass box is being lifted by a crane. You're walking down the stairs but you're going up.
Tamarack turn yellow and then loose leaves cheers
What light is on during takeoff?
Do you have to adjust the mixture when climbing to the top of the mountain?
No, we don’t adjust the mixture at all in flight.
Is the Robinson more difficult to fly then Jet Ranger, etc.
I don't think so.
I'd recommend getting a dedicated audio recorder like a tascam dr-05. They are incredibly reliable, much more than a Gopro.
You should ask Premiere1Driver what he's using, because he's doing a similar thing to you, only in a Premiere jet.
The video is more important than the audio and having audio synced on the same clip as video makes editing easier. If I’m going to invest in more equipment, it would be more video equipment. 🤷🏻♀️
@@FlyingMAir I hear ya! $99 though and your audio troubles are over ;)
Loved this video by the way. Take care!
Robinson r 44?
I can't quite tell...is your GoPro Hero 7 view set for "wide" or "linear"?
Not linear. At least I don't think so.
Both video views are great. why don't you just do some cuts between the 2 video views and make 1 Composite video.
You can have the view of the outside most of the time and cut to the inside camera when you talk about what you are doing in the helicopter.
I thought of something like that, but it's a little more editing than I was willing to tackle the other day.
I want to fly a helicopter so bad.
i actually prefer narrating hehe
Will you please give me the helicopter for free..I like to fly with my own helicopter..
