@@Welchy Yep! Corsets are the OG bras. And especially in the regency period, when these high-waist dresses were in style, a lot of stay-styles didn't even completely cover the abdomen. They were kind of shaped like modern sports bras, just with the stiff under-structure. But Bridgerton never claims to be historically accurate. it's a historical fantasy world.
The only time corsets became painful was when it became a trend in the Victorian era for some to women chose to lace them up too tight, in an attempt to make their waist area even smaller....It's basically the same thing as intentionally squeezing into clothing that's too small, to the point it becomes painful.
@@Welchy All women in European kingdoms wore them, even working class women. It had to give comfort and support for the clothes. The myths were started by Victorian doctors who knew nothing about female anatomy and fashion lol

When they are laced properly yes, but there is skeletal evidence of the damage tight lacing did during the Victorian era when it was particularly popular, so it definitely wasn’t made-up (but maybe less widespread of an issue than people think today).
The ‘fainting’ common to the Victorian era, which people sometimes attribute to corsets, was more likely related to the common use and side effects of laudanum rather than difficulty breathing. There may have still been some connection though, since women experiencing pain from tight-lacing would probably take laudanum as it was an easily available analgesic.

It was obviously much more dangerous though, which is probably why the trend only lasted a relatively short time.

well, not really a defense per say. But Daphne's only point of reference to s*x was Simon, and she was raised in a time where a woman was considered "worthless" if she cant have a child. It is not surprising that she doesnt have any perception of "Consent". Much like a man (at the time) thinking that he is entitled to s*x just coz they are married, she considered herself entitled to a child just coz they were married. I am NOT saying that it was right, just that it was how SHE saw it.

THANK YOU for pointing out the horror that Daphne committed to Simon. So many people glossed that over and I was so disgusted. It doesn't matter what Simon did, her grape of him was beyond terrible and I can't believe they pretended the marriage was happily ever after at the end. It's so awful.
Daphne taking advantage of the situation, yes, but to flat out call it "Rape" is something that doesn't sum up the situation. Simon was easily strong enough to overthrow Daphne but got lost in the passion (which was not an assault on his body). A woman, on the other hand, often can't stop an assault from a man. I am not condoning what she did (which was worse in the books), but there has got to be another name for what happened between them.
@yvie914 It does categorize as rape. He told her to stop, and she didn't. It doesn't absolve her of what she did because he had the ability to use violence against her.

@yvie914 His words were "wait" twice, which is a request to stop. He did try to get her to move off him, but she got on top for the purpose of raping him. No, he didn't physically assault her to get her off. But he shouldn't have to, nor does it stop it from being rape.
If the roles were reversed, and it was a man on top that wouldn't move when the woman tried to push him away, especially after saying wait twice, not stopping until reaching his gratification, I would also say that's rape.
I would ask that you please stop victim shaming. Remove genders entirely. One party kept going after the other expressed they no longer consented.

I think the first and last season idea is really interesting but would work better for shows with lots of seasons(like Supernatural?). For a show with only 3 it comes off as just doing a normal reaction but deciding to randomly skip a season. Still appreciate getting to see you react to more than just the first and last ep of Bridgerton!
Yeah, a show like Pretty Little Liars would be good for such a format because I've seen ppl do 1st and last episode reactions to that one and they just get hella confused 😂 but at least if you had a full season to get into it, it might make a bit more sense 🤣🤷

I'm so glad you saw the r*pe scene as what it was! So many people gloss over it, just accept it or even blame Simon. It's even worse in the book, where he's not even fully conscious when it happens. It's why Daphne is my least favorite character.
Also, I recommend watching Queen Charlotte and maybe season 2 of Bridgerton. The bickering in season 2 is so funny. Also for the context of the falling out between Pen and Eloise.

57:21 the thing you have to keep in mind is that she doesn't have time to mourn a relationship, the season has started and she knows she needs to find a husband now. Because one way or another, she's going to give birth. She didn't want to come here and she didn't want to do any of this, but she *is* here and it is happening.
There is going to be another life that is entirely her responsibility in a time where women had next to no real power.
She can either find a husband and ensure that her child has a good life, or she can mourn her relationship and put it off and Miss Featherington will kick her out into the "poor section" where she will be stuck with a baby, in the immediate time after giving birth, with no money, no home, and no food.
What she did was bad. But it's understandable in her situation, especially in a time era like this one. Desperate times calls for desperate measures.
yeah, I think the fact girly was pregnant and therefore she wasn’t thinking about herself anymore passed right over his head 😂. Its a lot more understandable when you think about her actions through the lens of “providing for a baby”

We breathed perfectly well in corsets!!! I hate the ongoing theme that corsets were tight and no one could breath. Every class wore them!

you should do season 2, its about anthony and kate. it explores anthony's trauma of loosing his father. its daphnes final appearance. it also shows how the father died, and violets grief. also eloise finding about pen's secret and then colin breaking pen's heart literally a couple minutes after her best friend walked away from her. also benedict getting high in season 2 episode 3 was funny after all the darkness with the dad's death and trauma in that episode.

I love this idea, there are so many different shows to do this with and I am running off to subscribe simply for the small hope that you will do this with another show as well.
Queen Charlotte's husband is King George III known as the 'mad king'. He was the ruler when the US fought for independence. In his later years, his mental illness was much worse and Queen Charlotte stopped seeing him or being around him. I definitely want to see your reaction to the second half of season 3. You are so fun to watch.
Simon's line at 24:17 always gives me chills I love the way he delivers that.
"get married and adopt" RIGHT?! oh it made me upset that no one mentions it.
What I wish they'd have done is explore more of the place they were staying and the people, her while doing her duchess thing comes across a small orphanage and she's devastated about the situation. It's her first real time having to acknowledge and face that a lot of people just did not have parents like she did, whether it be like Simon's case where his father was cruel and abusive, or like these kids who don't have anyone.
Simon doesn't want to continue on with his father's bloodline, dna, and a compromise they could have come to is adopting children.
I wish Lady Danbury's scene with her was different, it could have had a great impact on Daphne's development if *anyone* bothered to side with Simon and got the full context
Also, the fact that his stutter came back when he first talked after Daphne did what she did in episode 6 makes me so sad

This was so good. You literally had me laughing out loud. Ok. 2 things now: You have to binge season 2! So many things will make more sense. I would love to see what you think of Anthony. Now that you are in the Bridgerton world you must what “Queen Charlotte”. It is a limited series spinoff from Bridgerton. It gives the back story/love story of Queen Charlotte and the King. It’s a roller coaster. Strap in and go for it.
Penelope was instantly my favorite character too!! and I was so firmly convinced that Lady Danbury was Wistledown I was so shocked.

Colin wasnt embarrassed by society to be with Pen. He was just genuinely afraid Pen didnt want him back. Thats why he asked his mother how do you know if they like you back? She friendzoned him hard under the willow tree after their kiss and had another suitor he watched her smile and dance with. Colin had no idea Pen liked him, didnt even realize his own feelings towards her till now. He's actually afraid he's not good enough for her, whereas Debling had a title and life's pursuit.

The “swish” by Marina was to check if her pregnancy was noticeable visibly yet. As much as I adore Bridgerton for all the fun stuff, I don’t think the show nearly did a good enough job of addressing Daphne’s r*pe of Simon and how wrong that was. (Yes I’m a woman, yes all the women I know agree that was r*pe)
If Anthony’s mistress, the opera singer goes to an aristocratic ball she will be shunned, everyone will walk away from her, no one will talk to her, because she is from the ‘Demi Monde’ the ‘Half World’ where women have sex before marriage, and are often paid for sex outside of marriage. Her presence will be seen as a corrupt example that should not be seen or known to exist by the virgin aristocrat young women.
