    I really wish there was a medium-high option with 8k and 14bit.
    The 14K scans just kill my PC and eat storage.

    Less crop is nice, too.

    Really great results from Apollon. In the real world, to use Apollon, I would have to develop Portra 400 in ECN-2 (that would be the process with Silbersalz right?). I would love to see a comparison between Portra ECN-2 developed & apollo scanned vs Portra C41 developed and Frontier Scanned.

      @VariTimo Před rokem

      It would be more grainy with C41 and have slightly more contrast on the negative. The SilberSalz35 color science isn’t as anywhere near what the Frontier can do in terms of giving you an analog print like look. Resolution is kind of a mute point since Portra 400 even developed in ECN2 doesn’t give you more than 6K nominal resolution. Even 50D won’t really go beyond that much.

      @@VariTimo Did you download the samples? the Apollon does appear more detailed.

      @@EM-ve9bh How much are you planning to crop/ how large are you going to print? You get maybe a small amount of detail more with 50D or 200T but 250D and 500T simply don’t have the resolving power in 35mm 8-perf. Yes you can look at real clean grain very very close up, but at that point you’re looking at a Super 8 sized portion of the frame. With a Frontier it might only be a 16mm sized portion. Within a reasonable crop of let’s say 200% there is no noise issue with the Frontier and no gain from 6K to 14K. Check out Steve Yedlin’s Resolution Demo on the topic. He shot The Last Jedi, Knives Out, and Glass Onion.

      @@VariTimo Well the Silbersalz35 grade does not try to reproduce a c41 analog print. It is meant to be a somewhat close representation of a motion picture contact print (Kodak 2383 I'd guess). And I think they are doing a pretty good job on that.
      And if you do not do really large prints, the 14K option is mostly worth it for the increased bit depth of 16 Bit compared to 8 Bit of the 4k Scan (or Frontier). At least for me that would be the main point on why I would get the upgraded files. Just to get more leeway to add a look to it/grade it :)

      @ I wasn’t talking about C41 prints. I’ve seen a few photochemically finished prints of movies shot on Vision3 and finished on 2838. Silbersalz35’s films scanned on my Frontier look more like a 2838 print than their color science. Their colors are “inspired by Vision print films” and they’re not doing an amazing job. The gamma is way to low and the hues aren’t right either. I’m not saying my Frontier looks just like 2838 But it comes much closer in terms of contrast and color saturation. The hues are still a little different.
      And I wouldn’t want 14K sized files if I wanted better color depth. It’s just not worth the hustle. And I’ve edited the living shit out of less than 10MB, sRGB, 8Bit Frontier files without them falling apart.

    Since you scanned a Portra 400 film (and not a Vision3 film) by the Apollon scanner, when is this option avaiable for customers? I mean seeing this video I don‘t want to miss the chance anymore, to get this amount of details out of my negatives.

    • @kypixful

      they offer it already for third party films, you can just send them your Portra!
