This is a great idea. There is so much you could teach in this class. From creative writing and story telling, to team building, problem and puzzle solving. Dealing with conflict and and challenges, public speaking to small groups and time management. Learning to tap into your creativity and thinking outside the box. Even exploring the stigma of RPGing and history. Heck, I'd like to be in the class and I've been gaming for 25 years.
Hey thanks for the encouragement, Chad. You touch on a lot of good ideas here, and I'd probably let you into the class :)
I teach a Comic Book elective class at my high school (I am a senior English teacher) and in one of the units in the Comic Book class, the kids learn how to play a superhero ttrpg (usually Mutants & Masterminds). They learn how to create their own characters, write their own single-page adventures, and GM their own games. We have a week of play where students in each small group take turns GM'ing and playing a small "campaign" over the course of a week. The kids have a blast. It is a lesson plan that I am always tweaking and improving as it is extremely complicated. I have also tried using different rpg's such as Prowlers & Paragons.
What an awesome opportunity to grow the hobby! I've always considered RPGs to be a well-rounded teaching tool -- math, creativity, problem solving, socializing. It's really perfect for a course like this. I like RPGology as a course title, personally.
Will students be given an opportunity to run games for their classmates?
RPGology is definitely in my top 3. Thanks for the vote :) Students will be given the chance to run games. I'm aiming for 15-20 students and I'm almost positive a couple of them will be familiar with rpgs and more suited to running games.
By the end of the 2 weeks my goal is that all of them would be able to GM if they wanted to, and anyone who wants to give it a shot is given a chance, even if it is very brief.
WASD20 I would love to take that winterim. I've been trying to get into tabletop RPG's and I've asked a few people to teach me, but they haven't really. I think "So you want to slay a dragon" would be a great name, but I wouldn't name it something like "Game Study" because A) Game Study could get confused with the board game class, and B) Game Study just sounds lame. I also like So You Want to Slay a Dragon, because all the rest of the classes that start with "So you want to..." are life professions, and this really isn't.
I think the Lazy Dungeon Master is a fantastic book to plug for your class. In fact if you talk to Sly Flourish he may even donate a couple for your class if you ask. I don't know him personally but if you send him an email or something you never know what could come of it.
Great idea!
WASD20 You could then possibly give them away to the kids who volunteer to be DM's for games that week.
Juce Which could inspire a whole new era of pencil and paper gamers. Good effort mate.
I think it's a great idea. If I were you I'd try reaching out different companies for donations using your teacher email address. Go after the big companies you are essentially creating their next crop of customers. I look forward to see how this goes.

Great suggestion. I'm definitely going to reach out to some of them now. Worth a shot!
As a high school student I would LOVE to take this class, escpecialy for a kid who has discovered rpgs on his own with some friends who also know very little. Alot of people i know have been turned off of RPGs because of bad DM's which are students like them most of the time.
Theatre of the mind would be a good name
I do like the sound of that name, just wonder if it'll be misleading because we'll use maps and minis for some of our gaming.
I would love a dungeons and dragons class at my school, I've never played before and I'm about to start so this will be awesome
HOLY SHIT!! YOU TEACH A HIGH SCHOOL CLASS ABOUT VIDEO GAMES!?!? WHERE THE FUCK WAS THAT CLASS WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL!?!? Btw, congrats on 200
Great to see you and your school even considering this! And yes, it is odd that we still need to combat the negative stereotype that D&D and games like it still have. Me, being a Christian, have had to discuss this many times. You ever considered doing a video on this?
I have indeed considered it. May get to that eventually. :)
Please post some more FPS gameplay, i really liked your Titanfall video. You mentioned you enjoyed Battlefield in that vid, you should post some game play of that too.
The Art of Table Top Game Mastery: Becoming a Triple Threat in the Theatre of the Mind.
Course includes acting, writing and producing a table top/role playing experience
Ooh. Nice suggestion. Thanks for weighing in. I like it, but I fear it sounds a little too intimidating for newcomers to the hobby. I'm honestly wondering how many kids I'll get to sign up for this class.
WASD20 What if someone wrote down what happened as people played, to make like a story?
You can order dice directly from Chessex(the brand in Game-stores) at chessex.com/
Depending on prices in your local stores, you might actually save some GP!
Who knows, maybe you can write to them and explain your plan. Depending on the number of sets, maybe they give you a discount. YOu can send them an email about that here: questions@chessex.com
Sweet, thanks. I will be doing this for sure, though I'll probably wait until Spring to make sure my course idea actually gets approved :)
WASD20 Yeah, good Idea. Wouldn't want to order a buttload of dice before you actually need them! lol
