    Much like the 18 speed Eaton trans. that is prevalent in the US. Good job to you and your Dad for staying with the manuals! Todd the retired trucker.

      The difference of-course being that this ZF gearbox is fully synchronised, and it has "servoshift" meaning the shift action is supported by air making the sift action a lot lighter.

    I got a 12 speed XF and it drives lovely, their a completely different animal to an auto, I hate autos with a passion, changed jobs last year and nearly fell over when they said it’s a manual. Literally jumped for joy

    Cracking video Becky, same box 4 over 4 with a splitter as I had on my Class 1 practical test, many many moons ago! Still would like a manual to drive, but my knees would probably disagree! 😂

    I used to love the 12 speed Eaton twin splitter in the ERF's Becky, I have a classic Seddon Atkinson tractor unit 401 with a 9 speed Eaton box fitted & a 290 Rolls Royce Eagle diesel engine ( screaming Eagle ), love manuals, my DAF is automatic at work bloody crap gearbox.

    If I remember correctly.When I took my truck and bus test,a long time ago,if you passed on an automatic, you had to take another test on a manual.
    Thanks Becky take care.

      If its like a scania 3 pedal opticruise (automatic) but with a clutch pedal that you only use when coning to a stop or pulling away will class as a manual.

      I think they have changed the rules and if you already have a manual car license and take your test in an auto truck or coach you can now drive a manual! Doesn’t seem right but there you have it! All that effort I made with the gear changing exercise! 😂

    Never driven a 16 speeder. Had a 15 plate cf75 with a 12 speeded and an mx brake on it....lovely piece of kit fully loaded you could go down bird lip and the only time you touched the brakes was just as you came to the roundabout to go left on to the lower part of the hill.The sign of a proper trucker using a manual box.

    Good video and very well explained too. Driven may manual units over the years myself. I'm one of the few no though I think that now prefers an auto box as like your dad my knees have seen better days. The one complaint I have is I see with new drivers driving automatics is that they don't appreciate going down the box to help you slow down. Its foot down and slam on the brake last minute. We have quite a few shot loads that way.

    Thanks for the info about the gear changing. I understand completely. The one aspect that surprised me was that the half gears work in the low range. About 30 years ago I spent the day as a passenger in my friend's MAN truck. I actually got to drive it briefly on a disused airfield he was delivering to. I got up to 5th gear briefly, (i.e. I got into high range). He never used the splitter on low range, so I don't know if it was actually an option or not.

    I remember back in the 80s delivering new Mercedes tractor units. They had 4 speed knock over boxes giving 8 gears plus a splitter giving a total of 16 gears. When delivering the new units we usually started them in 13th and only used the top 4 gears. We then moved onto the pre select EPS gearbox, but thats a different story. Love your videos

    • @DannyDan2k13
      @DannyDan2k13 Před 7 dny

      @@Land_Rover_Tony Indeed. I'm not sure it's so much about laziness for American truckers, but more so about shifting quickly as to not lose momentum like on a hill rather than double clutching which would be the alternative for a non-synchro gearbox

    The words you were looking for is unconcious competence. Four stages of learning, unconcious incompetance (you are crap and dont know yet), concious incompetance ( still crap but at least you know it now), conscious competance (getting there but still having to think about it), unconscious competance (Becky changing through the box or not having to think about it at all). Great vid.

    Very informative, the reality is that a lot of combinations are not used. One thing I never understood,although I am goings back 30 years, is how the splitter, when used, registers the change on a paper tachograph.
