With regards to Somalia’s autonomous regions.. Somalia is falling apart. Somaliland declared independence back in 1991, but it wasn’t recognized by anyone until the beginning of 2024 when Ethiopia recognized it in exchange for the use of a port near Berbera. In response, the Somalia federal government rewrote their constitution to limit the power of local tribes. This triggered Puntland to declare independence until the constitution was modified. While the independence declarations of Puntland and Somaliland are not officially recognized, only the southwest portion of Somalia is technically part of the country now.
