One of my favorite hymns. In fact I met the Author of this hymn (George Bennard) in 1957 when I was just 9 years old in Pontiac, Michigan. He along with his wife also sang a duet of another song he had written, Speak My Lord. I am so grateful that my parents took me to see them. He went to heaven in 1958.

Ohio.( I'm from Columbus, Oh.) + as you noted he went to Heaven in 1958, in Reed City, Michigan the article said. And the city commerce had put Up a Cross near his home in commemoration. Made me Wonder ?? Is the Cross Still there? Do you know ? Orr did the ACLU + cohorts have it taken down "( as they have So Many Christian + Leaders 'memorials'.
Hi David, that was a great privilege to met the author, sometimes when I play, Old rugged Cross on the piano, I can't prevent the tears flowing. The Holy Spirit touch hearts through this hymn, blessed Easter to your family too.
Cheryl - I’m not sure if the Cross is still there, however I’ve seen it on many occasions. The last time though was probably 20 years ago.

I cry every time I hear it not only because of him But Mostly Because my Lord and Savior died on that Old Rigged Cross for my sins. Thanks again. Love In Christ, Janet
He was a methodist evangelist from Michigan. He wrote many hymns. However, this particular one is known all over the world.

My wife's grandmother had dementia and finally got to where she knew no one but my wife's uncle said many times at night he would hear her singing every word of this song. Even though I never met her I always think of that story when I hear or play that song.
Piano playing was perfect, but what I really appreciated was the lighting and different camera angles.

this song was played at my mom's funeral in 2016, I can't listen to this song without busting out bawling, it was her favorite song, she sang it to me growing up, even as an adult she could still sing me to sleep, god I miss my momma :'-(

Helps me to remember that we all have crosses to bear but none with the pain and anguish of his. His resurrection from that mighty cross with weight of all of our sins gives us hope as he helps us with our cross. We all know the euphoria of our human love but there is no greater love than his.

The song has some serious problems with Christianity. Likable melody but the words are a little off. As a Christian you don't worship a cross.
