Heyyyy, I'm back with my long-ass comments lol. I'll start with my feelings about the season as a whole. I'm overall really happy with what we got, I just have a few things I'd change about the way certain elements were done and there are some things I think were missing, but the material they gave us, I really enjoyed. I do think this will become my most rewatched season because Polin are my faves and they did an overall really good job with their story, so I'm really happy about that.
Okay, so I don't mind that Eloise did the whole ultimatum thing in ep 5, esp being a former film major, screenwriters LOVE a ticking clock. I can't tell you how many times my profs were like, "give your characters a deadline" or "I like that you gave your character a deadline" lol 😂 I was a little bit like, El babe, it's her engagement party, can you give her like one more day? 😅😂 But TV show writers love maximum drama, so alright, I guess lol. The rest of the episode was great, and I enjoyed it overall haha
I think we talked about this a little bit last time, so sorry if I'm sounding like a broken record, but yes, yes, yes Colin's feelings for Pen were always there and I get a little frustrated when people miss it, but I do think you're right that it's mostly people who don't like Colin who miss it b/c they don't care as much about his story as we obviously do lol, so like I totally get it, but also, the "What a barb!" scene in season one? The tension in that moment? This man TOOK HER BY THE HAND AND TOOK HER TO A PRIVATE ROOM AND CLOSED THE DOOR in 2x08 and when she says he's "astonishing" afterwards, he has never looked more thrilled in his life. Omg and when he says, his interest in the mines was sparked after seeing her "exquisite necklace" and she's like, "Was it?" he does this little smile and he's so pleased with himself, I'm just like this little dummy is so in love and he doesn't even know it and I think it's because he just can't distinguish when platonic love became romantic love. Like until he kisses her and he has that lightbulb moment, that love is such a natural extension of how he already felt about her, that it just doesn't hit him until SHE initiates a romantic moment between them. He's already behaved in a very un-platonic way towards her up until that moment, but he's doing it unconsciously and it takes her switching up the dynamic for him to realize, oh I'm fully in love with my best friend 🥹🥹 I love them so much 😭
I loved their first time so much. It's so beautiful, it's so tender and it's so them. It's like a perfect encapsulation of their relationship in an intimate scene and the scene after that when they're just laying together and talking, I loved getting to see the intimacy after the intimacy.
I'm with you on Cressida. It's almost like they hit reset on her character or something lol. I hadn't noticed it before you pointed it out, but I was disappointed about how she figured out about Lady Whistledown because there were so many clues for her to pick up on and just because she's not a wordsmith like Pen, doesn't mean she isn't smart and unobservant b/c you're right, she did notice something was going on with Polin before anyone else (besides Violet) did. I wanted her to notice the look Pen and Eloise shared when Cressida was about to announce that she was Whistledown, I wanted her to catch on to what Eloise said about someone being lonely enough to write Whistledown and put the pieces together herself, instead she just conveniently found someone who worked for the printer Pen uses and gave her all the information she needed to know.
I agree with you, this show needs more episodes per season. They try to fit too much in 8 eps and Jess Brownell has talked about how hard it is to fit everything into eight episodes and that's why they'd never do two of the siblings' love stories in one season, so I'm like, y'all can't push for a couple more episodes? This is Netflix's biggest show, ik this show is big budget, but I think Netflix can invest in a couple more episodes. As much as each season is about one main couple, this is still an ensemble show and I wouldn't take any of the ensemble stuff away, but it's just too much to get through in not enough time. And I really wanted more of a fully fleshed out arc for Prudank this season. Prior to the season, Bessie Carter said something about how Prudence isn't used to physical affection, so Harry's affection towards her is pretty overwhelming and I thought we were gonna watch their relationship develop more over the course of the season, but we only got a little bit of that. We didn't have time for more, so I get it, but it feels like a missed opportunity.
I feel like Eloise and Benedict's characters just keep going in circles. This season had the potential for a lot more much needed growth from Eloise, but it almost feels like they're trying to save it all for her season and they don't need to. There's enough room for her to learn and grow before her season, it's not like they'll run out of stuff for her to do in her season. We get some growth, but not as much as I was hoping for. Benedict I'm truly so bummed about because, he mentioned at the beginning of this season that he felt like he had no purpose now that Anthony's back. In season two, it was so interesting how he and Colin were struggling with very similar issues, but they both felt like the other had everything figured out, when they didn't. I was hoping they'd explore that more with Benedict this season and that seeing Colin find all of the answers he was looking for would bring him to his low point to hopefully set him up for season four. I'm glad he's finally confirmed to be pansexual, I'm so happy about that, but there was a point where a lot of things were happening with the Whistledown stuff and they kept cutting to him, Lady Tilly and her friend who's name I forget lol and I was like, we get it, he's fucking, that's not what's important right now. When the stakes are high, it's a really weird pacing choice to cut to the same exact scene over and over. And you're right about that conversation with that guy about the arts, that could've been Ben's path back towards the arts, or to at least grapple with his impostor syndrome a little bit.
I haven't read Much Ado About Nothing, but (1) I'm tempted to now and (2) I love this idea of bringing in those elements for Ben's season.
I'm really excited about Francesca's storyline now, but it is looking like I'm gonna have to read WHWW and put my film school brain to some use and see if I can gather enough thoughts for a video on how I think they might go about adapting her story so I can fight the homophobes lol. I do think a lot of people are just completely writing off this change before they see how it's done tho and writing off Masali before they even get to know her as Michaela, which is why I'm a little bummed they revealed her at the last possible second. I get why they did it, but I'm just so excited to see what Masali brings to the character and so I selfishly wanted more than an introduction b/c now we have to wait two more years for season 4 and we don't even know yet how much she'll be in it.
I love that we got to see Anthony be an absolute goof this season, Jonny Bailey's comedic timing is too good 😂 I also loved that scene where Kate's helping Colin work through his LW issues a bit before the wedding, it's such a great Kanthony moment, but it's also a great Kate and Colin moment. I want Kanthony and Polin either teaming up to be mentors to their other siblings or making it a competition of like who gives better advice lol 🤣
I fully sobbed when Yellow started playing as she was walking down the aisle. Obviously, we'd been waiting for that song all season, the fact that it played during the wedding, I was in tears both times I watched it and then just when I finally recovered from that, You Belong With Me started playing and I was sobbing again. Part of the reason I haven't been able to watch the season start to finish is because I'm not emotionally prepared for the effect that hearing those two songs back to back has on me lmao. Also, her wedding dress was beautiful 🥹
My opinions on the LW of it all are still solidifying, so you might just get a random DM from me about it once I've rewatched a few more times lol, but I'm again, overall really happy with it, but there's probably a couple things I'd have done a little differently, I just haven't quite put my finger on what that is yet.
I can't believe we have to wait another two years to talk more about Bridgerton. I've really enjoyed discussing season three with you though and like I said, I may DM you randomly every now and then when more thoughts pop into my mind haha ☺

Great perspective on the parallelism in identity in Eloise and Benedict’s subplots!

Regarding Francesca & Michaela, I welcome the gender change and I'm excited for it, I've been waiting for lesbian romance in Bridgerton! What annoyed me about this particular introduction, is that we spent a significant part of the season watching Fran's and John's relationship evolve, making them fight for it and seeing them get what they wanted was one of the highlights of the season for me - so having Francesca so thunderstruck by someone else literally days into her marriage left a sour, How I Met Your Mother finale-esque taste in my mouth.
Like, I thought introduction was a nice, I just wish Fran didn't make that face that we haven't seen her make all season at anybody 😥
While I didn't read her book, my understanding is that she never cheated on John, physically or emotionally, she decided to move on romantically after she grieved her husband enough, which is completely different vibe from being infatuated with his cousin at this stage of her storyline.
