It clearly surprises him enough that he takes a sudden suspicion of the deathmark, to include a scan. The deathmark is quick to follow up by he is merely following his protocols... but there is more there than meets the eye, and Szeras knows it.
Deathmarks follow a sort of code of honor. Though, said code of honor is beyond the understanding of mere mortals. Something about not killing other necron nobles during war and conflict. And not killing honorable (in the eyes of the necron) individuals. Just because there's a badass on the battlefield does not make them honorable so they can get marked for death. Commanders and tactician have said to be killed by the deathmarks.
It's amazing to see how just a slight change in movement style from smooth and casual to stiff and forced can convey anger and irritation on a blank unmoving face.

I love Deathmark’s comment about destroyers. It can be interpreted as „Does it look like my job?” I also find it Cool that they point out that Szeras is so pedantic he will send an assasin to do destroyer’s/warrior’s job.
Destroyers are like a sledge hammer, they are basically a slow version of exterminatus. They scour planets down to the last bacteria. Getting them to move to next target before they cleanse a planet of all life is pretty much impossible. Deathmark is far more suitable if the number of targets is relatively small and time is of the essence.
@@combomaster666 Deathmarks are meant for important killings. They can literally hide in their own special dimension to wait for the target to come to a good spot. Szeras basically sent a vindicator assasin with Necron tech to clean up siege survivors. Destoryers would be better as they hunt living things, planet would be okay. At the very least warriors in order to limit colladeral damage.

I'd prefer a more 'refined' sound. The Necrons are super-tech, they should not be clunky. So instead of the solid sounds of the footsteps, it would be a bass techno-sound where the Necron's feet are interacting with the floor's protective field. To me clunky should be for Sentinel walkers, Mechanicus personnel, and Kastelan robots.
Ultra dense super metameterial alloys that regenerate beyond the quantum level, walking around on other ultra dense super metameterial alloys - probably sounds quite heavy. Id say "clunk/clank" is pretty on lore for a guy that size. Also, whos to say the video doesn't represent Necron hearing and we're actually hearing an even more muted version of what the machines sound like - or - Necrons don't have ear drums and your ears just hear the raw "clunk" of the noise they make upon the floor as a representation of how much louder they are in fact making noises when compared to a human's perception. As the architect of the biofurnaces, that turned the Necrontyr into the Necron, he would be the authority on souls, if such a thing exists. Maybe he thinks the term soul is too vague to explain the nuances of the topic. Maybe he still feels the loss of his soul (parts of it) and does not want anyone to remind him. He could also try to avoid this topic around the lower classes of Necron, because he does not want them to think about the concept and the loss.
Maybe he understands the subatomic metaphysical matter that makes up what we understand as a "Soul" at such a higher plane of knowledge that using the term as synonymous as a person's identity is what offended him. If souls are as real and valuable as they are in 40K then it makes sense he'd know what type of matter or energy they are made of and dislikes the loose language we use for such a topic

There are subtle changes in the language as well. The Deathmark consistently speaks in the 3rd person as it represents the honour code of the Deathmark. As soon as its personal skills were put into question, the Deathmark switches to the 1st person to emphasize (with subtle sass) that Szeras is asking for a scalpel to perform the job of a hammer, and to respect the programming of the Deathmark honour code, to which Szeras abides.
"You exhibit a nominal degree of 'aberrancy'." is Szeras's way of criticizing the Deathmark. He's saying 'you're awfully chatty and diffident for an assassin. Perhaps your programming is scuffed?' Also "I exist and abide by the Protocols of the Deathmark" isn't neccessarily an "I will obey your orders." it's more of a 'Phrase your orders so they fit within my job, my caste, my beliefs, and I will do it." backhanded response to the aberrancy comment, but one without directly insulting, and with words chosen VERY carefully. There's no way for Szeras to dispute against it because to do so would be to claim the Deathmark isn't acting like a Deathmark.
This Deathmark also seems more or less dodging a bullet there because the way he nods when Ultramarine is killed does give some idea of sentience in him so maybe there is something special about him and tries to hide it from Szeras to not get "fixed".
Also, interesting to note that the Deathmark usually refers to itself in third person, ("this one understands") but that one time, it refers to itself as "I". I wonder if Szeras noticed.
Is it that weird for a deathmark to have some sentience? My understanding is that as you go up the hierarchy necrons retain more of their self awareness. Is it strange for an assassin to be able to think?

The guy screaming at the beginning, his body shocked at every conceivable neuron being activated and taken away, the horror of tiny things crawling above and around him. I wasn't ready for a cold open like that. Voice actor did an amazing job instilling horror within me.

If I ain't wrong when necrons awaken from the sleep there is a chance that they have glitches in their programming, and it becomes more noticeable the more cognitive ability the necron has

You can see how mechanical the Deathmark, when compared to Szeras. It clearly shows the difference in cognitive independence between the lower and higher tier Necrons. The lower ones are mechanical robots, the top levels are highly independent and still maintain their form and pose from their Necrontyr days, and the ones in middle straddle the lines.
And the Deathmark are still somewhere in the middle of retained personality. The common soldiers have so little mental capacity left that they have no independent thought at all and can relatively easily be outmaneuvered IF an enemy commander figures out a strategy they had not encountered before biotransference.

Of all the named Necron characters to be captured by, Szeras is the worst: Zahndrekh will be civil with you until the time comes. Trazyn may collect you, or just troll you (Also known as Mind-schackle scarabs) Orikan will either just kill you or let you live, depending on your place in his plans at that moment. Imhotekh will just cut off a hand or kill you. Szarekh you can at-least negotiate with, and even if it comes to blows he'll make it quick. But Szeras? Oh Szeras will use you as a guinea pig, he'll find out what makes you tick, and make your every second in his charge utter agony.

As a Necron player I loved seeing this. Xenos races never get the attention of Space Marines and for me, Necrons have some of the best lore in 40k. This scene and the following fight scene were fantastic. The nanoscarabs infecting the guardsmen and the Synaptic Disintegrator doing its job. The way the Deathmark lures the marine to its death, chills.
I got into Warhammer 40,000 by being gifted 2 boxes of Grey Knights. Then I switched to Adepths Custodes. Now I play Slaanesh. With this background information, I feel like I can understand a little bit what the absence of ones favorites in media feels like.

Ok, it may not have all the violence of the boarding action scene from Astartes, it may not have the spectacle of seeing the Warmaster direct an orbital bombardment from the Heresy trailer but the disgust and vitriol in his voice when he talks of “souls” will now be one of my favourite moments in 40k animation. A line delivered so perfectly it tells you just about everything you need to know about him.
Depends on the Destroyer in question, but the design of Szeras and many other Crypteks predates the Skorpekh Destroyer. Many Crypteks have opted for the spider legged look a long time before Skorpekh Destroyers were a thing. Lokhust Destroyers used to be the only model of Destroyer in and out of universe.
The thing is, apparently Szeras wasn’t even affected by the big nap, he was just always an absolute fucking psycho. Not an ounce of destroyer in him. He’s basically just the Necron equivalent of Dr Frankenstein and always has been, even before biotransference.
I love the little details, obviously there is massive difference in the size and design of the Deathmark and Szeras, but the verve and passion as Szeras speaks compared to the level tone of the Deathmark, and Szeras' ticks and movements against the assassin, not moving an inch if the movement is not necessary, excellently illustrates the stratas of Necron caste society.

I could watch 3h of nothing but animated Necrons talking ... Truly masters of the Materium. No wonder the Mechanicum was so easily influenced by Mag'ladroth, to indirectly aspire to their greatness. They are magnificent.

I do like how Szeras, being a nercon with a much more developed personality, has a much more normal voice compared to the Deathmark who is more robotic, giving the idea he hasn't fully 'awakened' and regained his personality.

Thing to be noted is that Szeras is an extreme case, he's the dude that created the entire process for stripping his own people off their biological bodies and souls, even other Necrons see him as the sickest of fucks.

The A.I in Death of Integrity also considers humanity as it is to be beyond saving for its cruelty, having once been a faithful ally of its crew, now slaughtered for being ‘heretics’
Not too often but they do converse among lower ranking necrons and higher ones as well except for Trayzn and Orikan lol but with Illuminor Szeras being the main antagonist he is just well done here
conversations happen fairly often between necrons that arent brainwashed. its not really necessary as they have other ways to communicate, but they still do it out of habit; even immortals are capable of speech even if its mostly only so they can deliver reports. And towards the brainless ones like warriors or immortals, necron lords have a tendency to still throw long, motivational speeches at them (like it matters) that the lower necrons will motionlessly listen to without understandign any of it until they perceive an order for them to follow. All in all, only the necron constructs like scarabs and the necron warriors are mute: all others are capable of speech and do talk to eachother, through their degree of cognizance varies.
I love how no one’s talking about the fact that Szeras himself called this planetary eradication of the locals a mere “experiment” considering just how much death and destruction there’s been thus far.
Id love an episode with him just scuttling around , waffling to himself about his experiments and generally just his day to day interacting with other necrons and constructs while a rageing battle is going on
The inquisition has dispatched an agent to determine whether you are a heretic or not. Stay calm he will not torture you for information of your associate heretics then burn you alive to cleanse you of your sins.
I really like that the longer dialogue had the sections where you'd probably pause to take a breath in between sentinces cut out. It really drives the point home that the Necrons are completely machine with zero need to breathe like when they were mortal.
The sound design in this scene is amazing, all the little clicks and clacks whenever the necrons move add to their creepiness and utter lack of humanity.
Nanoscarabs. Likely been burrowing into that port man for hours at least. Collecting data with extremely invasive and agonising microsurgeries all through his body.
Given his visible agitation, I'd say that was a containment for what was intended to be the human's soul. The containment quickly failed and the soul returned to the Warp, meaning his latest experiment continues to be a failure.
I am genuinely unsettled by what I saw that giant metal crab do to that room full of screaming meat bags. Well done. Also props to not leaving the Deathmark silent. Theirs is an ancient and respected profession. To use one can be considered a breach in etiquette. Luckily, it’s an honor than the lesser races are incapable of understanding and as such are given no such consideration.
THE FREAKIN SERVO HISSES AND RATTLES. even when not speaking, they still retain body language. It’s fascinating to me. But also Szeras reminds me of Professor Hojo and every second he’s onscreen the comparison strengthens.

Although I love everything about this short animation, Szeras' little unhinged little twitches take the cake imo. Really shows his unhinged side under the souless exterior.

It's more something like : " it's not that I can't do what you are asking me to do, it's just that you explained it as if I was a mere vulgar soldier. If you do want me to do the job, give your orders in a way worth my status of assassin".
For those wondering why Szeras gets angry with the Deathmark, it’s because he is the single most top authority in the matter of what a soul is and isn’t, down to a mathematical and scientific perfection, to use the term soul in a religious context in his presence is to deny his immortal life’s work

Szeras basically sent a vindicator assasin with Necron tech to clean up siege survivors. Destoryers would be better as they hunt living things, planet would be okay. At the very least warriors in order to limit colladeral damage.

Yeah, the entire point is to eliminate the abnormalities in the experiment, not wiping out the survivors. He wanted the specific targets shown on screen taken down with a more surgical precision while minimizing changes in the rest of the test subjects.

The sound design on this is incredible. Every little clank and whir emphasizes the Necrons' movement so well.
I'd prefer a more 'refined' sound. The Necrons are super-tech, they should not be clunky. So instead of the solid sounds of the footsteps, it would be a bass techno-sound where the Necron's feet are interacting with the floor's protective field.
To me clunky should be for Sentinel walkers, Mechanicus personnel, and Kastelan robots.
Ultra dense super metameterial alloys that regenerate beyond the quantum level, walking around on other ultra dense super metameterial alloys - probably sounds quite heavy. Id say "clunk/clank" is pretty on lore for a guy that size. Also, whos to say the video doesn't represent Necron hearing and we're actually hearing an even more muted version of what the machines sound like - or - Necrons don't have ear drums and your ears just hear the raw "clunk" of the noise they make upon the floor as a representation of how much louder they are in fact making noises when compared to a human's perception. If it's a "natural phenomenon" then it isn't a spiritual phenomenon which means it can be explained thru science.

As the architect of the biofurnaces, that turned the Necrontyr into the Necron, he would be the authority on souls, if such a thing exists. Maybe he thinks the term soul is too vague to explain the nuances of the topic.
Maybe he still feels the loss of his soul (parts of it) and does not want anyone to remind him. He could also try to avoid this topic around the lower classes of Necron, because he does not want them to think about the concept and the loss.
Maybe he understands the subatomic metaphysical matter that makes up what we understand as a "Soul" at such a higher plane of knowledge that using the term as synonymous as a person's identity is what offended him. If souls are as real and valuable as they are in 40K then it makes sense he'd know what type of matter or energy they are made of and dislikes the loose language we use for such a topic

There are subtle changes in the language as well. The Deathmark consistently speaks in the 3rd person as it represents the honour code of the Deathmark. As soon as its personal skills were put into question, the Deathmark switches to the 1st person to emphasize (with subtle sass) that Szeras is asking for a scalpel to perform the job of a hammer, and to respect the programming of the Deathmark honour code, to which Szeras abides.

I just ran their voices for this script in my head, abridged necrons are funny.
"You exhibit a nominal degree of 'aberrancy'." is Szeras's way of criticizing the Deathmark. He's saying 'you're awfully chatty and diffident for an assassin. Perhaps your programming is scuffed?'
Also "I exist and abide by the Protocols of the Deathmark" isn't neccessarily an "I will obey your orders." it's more of a 'Phrase your orders so they fit within my job, my caste, my beliefs, and I will do it." backhanded response to the aberrancy comment, but one without directly insulting, and with words chosen VERY carefully. There's no way for Szeras to dispute against it because to do so would be to claim the Deathmark isn't acting like a Deathmark.
This Deathmark also seems more or less dodging a bullet there because the way he nods when Ultramarine is killed does give some idea of sentience in him so maybe there is something special about him and tries to hide it from Szeras to not get "fixed".
Also, interesting to note that the Deathmark usually refers to itself in third person, ("this one understands") but that one time, it refers to itself as "I". I wonder if Szeras noticed.

@@OmiGundam777Most of the lower ranks lack self-awareness, kinda like the Rubric Marines of the Thousand Sons. Recognition of self is very much a thing that Szeras would take note of.
The guy screaming at the beginning, his body shocked at every conceivable neuron being activated and taken away, the horror of tiny things crawling above and around him. I wasn't ready for a cold open like that. Voice actor did an amazing job instilling horror within me.
And it's followed by one of the most hillarious dialogue exchange in W40k animation.....Necrons need to be focused on more,this whole series absolutely delivered

You can see how mechanical the Deathmark, when compared to Szeras.
It clearly shows the difference in cognitive independence between the lower and higher tier Necrons.
The lower ones are mechanical robots, the top levels are highly independent and still maintain their form and pose from their Necrontyr days, and the ones in middle straddle the lines.
And the Deathmark are still somewhere in the middle of retained personality. The common soldiers have so little mental capacity left that they have no independent thought at all and can relatively easily be outmaneuvered IF an enemy commander figures out a strategy they had not encountered before biotransference.

Imagine you are a sniper and your boss told you hey there is a full enemy convoy passing throught a bridge and order you to kill them all
Maybe you can still do it but the task is 10x more diffult than hiring a sapper to blow up the bridge or plant mines
Of all the named Necron characters to be captured by, Szeras is the worst:
Zahndrekh will be civil with you until the time comes.
Trazyn may collect you, or just troll you (Also known as Mind-schackle scarabs)
Orikan will either just kill you or let you live, depending on your place in his plans at that moment.
Imhotekh will just cut off a hand or kill you.
Szarekh you can at-least negotiate with, and even if it comes to blows he'll make it quick.
But Szeras? Oh Szeras will use you as a guinea pig, he'll find out what makes you tick, and make your every second in his charge utter agony.

As a Necron player I loved seeing this. Xenos races never get the attention of Space Marines and for me, Necrons have some of the best lore in 40k. This scene and the following fight scene were fantastic. The nanoscarabs infecting the guardsmen and the Synaptic Disintegrator doing its job. The way the Deathmark lures the marine to its death, chills.

Ok, it may not have all the violence of the boarding action scene from Astartes, it may not have the spectacle of seeing the Warmaster direct an orbital bombardment from the Heresy trailer but the disgust and vitriol in his voice when he talks of “souls” will now be one of my favourite moments in 40k animation.
A line delivered so perfectly it tells you just about everything you need to know about him.

Depends on the Destroyer in question, but the design of Szeras and many other Crypteks predates the Skorpekh Destroyer.
Many Crypteks have opted for the spider legged look a long time before Skorpekh Destroyers were a thing.
Lokhust Destroyers used to be the only model of Destroyer in and out of universe.
No he could not. The only thing they have in common is will to modify their bodies extensively. But the purpose of it is radically different.
Destroyers aren't defined by their appearence, but by their corrupted code.
The thing is, apparently Szeras wasn’t even affected by the big nap, he was just always an absolute fucking psycho. Not an ounce of destroyer in him. He’s basically just the Necron equivalent of Dr Frankenstein and always has been, even before biotransference.

I love the little details, obviously there is massive difference in the size and design of the Deathmark and Szeras, but the verve and passion as Szeras speaks compared to the level tone of the Deathmark, and Szeras' ticks and movements against the assassin, not moving an inch if the movement is not necessary, excellently illustrates the stratas of Necron caste society.

1: The Silent King has tasked him with figuring out a method to undo the Biotransference.
2: He wants to permanently shut off the Warp.

conversations happen fairly often between necrons that arent brainwashed. its not really necessary as they have other ways to communicate, but they still do it out of habit; even immortals are capable of speech even if its mostly only so they can deliver reports. And towards the brainless ones like warriors or immortals, necron lords have a tendency to still throw long, motivational speeches at them (like it matters) that the lower necrons will motionlessly listen to without understandign any of it until they perceive an order for them to follow.
All in all, only the necron constructs like scarabs and the necron warriors are mute: all others are capable of speech and do talk to eachother, through their degree of cognizance varies.

I love how no one’s talking about the fact that Szeras himself called this planetary eradication of the locals a mere “experiment” considering just how much death and destruction there’s been thus far.
Id love an episode with him just scuttling around , waffling to himself about his experiments and generally just his day to day interacting with other necrons and constructs while a rageing battle is going on

I really like that the longer dialogue had the sections where you'd probably pause to take a breath in between sentinces cut out. It really drives the point home that the Necrons are completely machine with zero need to breathe like when they were mortal.
The sound design in this scene is amazing, all the little clicks and clacks whenever the necrons move add to their creepiness and utter lack of humanity.

Nanoscarabs. Likely been burrowing into that port man for hours at least. Collecting data with extremely invasive and agonising microsurgeries all through his body.
Given his visible agitation, I'd say that was a containment for what was intended to be the human's soul. The containment quickly failed and the soul returned to the Warp, meaning his latest experiment continues to be a failure.

It's more something like : " it's not that I can't do what you are asking me to do, it's just that you explained it as if I was a mere vulgar soldier. If you do want me to do the job, give your orders in a way worth my status of assassin".
