Without a doubt. For a 5 or 6 stretch he was arguably the best player in baseball. Look at the back of his baseball card and you'll see 162 gms, 162 gms, etc.. His numbers were comparable to Jim Rice IMO. I could go on about Murph. He played on some BAD Braves teams too.

Back then it was a big deal when a power hit a homerun to the opposite field... And I remember that is what made Dale Murphy so special... That he can do that... These days, small little utility infielders are regularly hitting bombs to the opposite field. Everybody is!!!!

    • @jsd795

Don't be fooled those utility infielders are benefiting tremendously from a combination of the juiced ball, tiny parks and absolute crap pitching. Time machine those utility infielders back to 85 and most don't crack double figures in homers for a season plus they would strike out at an even more alarming rate than they do today.

5 consecutive gold gloves. The year they stole the MVP 1984, it would have been his 3rd consecutive a record. The guy that beat him hit Just above 300 I think 311, and had 19 home runs Ryne sandberg. If I remember correctly Murphy hit 304 36 home runs more than 100 rbi, more than 20 stolen bases, and he won the gold glove in his position that year.

I never understood why he is not in the hall of fame. One time they stole the mvp from him and gave it to Ryne Sandberg. Sandburg did have an excellent first half, but altogether Murphy had better numbers. I think it was 1984
