Not dumb, he is indeed correct. Songs like Stair Way to Heaven and WonderWall are amazing and every one likes them, but due to them being so overplayed you end up getting sick of them and even make them look like something only begginers would play with their guitar

My son and I went into our favorite music store a few weeks back. He grabbed a Gibson ES-175 and I plugged in an Ibanez 5 string fretless bass and we started playing 'Don't Fear the Reaper'.
Moments later, a drummer with a cowbell joined in, followed by a synthesizer and a second guitar player. After a few minutes 2 guys that worked in the store walked up to a mic's that were already setup and they asked us to start over. For the next half hour we performed Reaper 4 or 5 times until we were sounding pretty good.
I purchased the cables I went in for, and on the way home, my son and I agreed that Blue Oyster Cult has absolutely nothing to worry about.
Next time we're there we'll play White Room and Crossroads.

Hehe. This reminds me of something I saw at Riff City Guitar last year. Some kid (maybe 10 or 11) was trying to play Sweet Child of Mine on a G&L. He was doing quite badly - struggling, even. One of the staff came around, pulled up a stool and another guitar, and started playing a backing track for the kid. The kid smiled, dug-in, and kept going. Eventually, he more-or-less had it figured out. Every once in a while, the staffer would shake his head a little and say "higher" or "lower", then nod his head when the kid got it.
The kid's mom had tears in her eyes, and promised they'd be back later to pick a guitar out for her son. The staffer said something like "That's cool. We'll be glad to help you out. Seriously, though, it was fun to just sit down and jam with another player." You should've seen the kid's face light up!
Yeah, we like to joke around about songs that are overplayed or "forbidden" in guitar stores, but the truth is that if someone is sitting down to play a really common, relatively-easy tune, it's because that's what they're the most comfortable playing. We want more players, don't we? We want our hobby to grow, right? If you see someone playing terribly, or struggling with a song, or simply playing an overplayed earworm, don't make them feel bad for it. A lot of people have a really hard time even trying to play in public. Instead, either ignore them or sit and play with them. Show your love for the instrument. Show some patience. Show that you understand that everyone - even you - had to start somewhere.
BTW: I ended up selling an Explorer to a kid when I showed him how to play the main riff and intro to Enter Sandman on it while at a Guitar Center. I was just there to get a bag of picks, but you can't step into a guitar store without playing something.

0:15 I once knew this guitar teacher who was a big scam ass guy he used to trade his guitars with good guitars his students used to get by saying his was better n stuff and sure enough the kids coming to him knowing absolutely nothing used to give it to him this happened for a year and he got a nice collection of good guitars for free so we used to call him the “guitar trader” but at a point my friend and I couldn’t take it so we started telling people about it one fine day he got his ass whooped and had to return all the guitars back with money for the classes since he the parents threatened to sue him he almost went Suicidal. So yeah I remembered that when I saw the guitar trader shop and taught I’ll share the story btw Tyler funny af video as always keep them coming 🤘🏻
