    some of these appear to be Dutch and the inland ones appear to be airfield bunkers, some of which appear to be airfield defence related or for bomb and ammunition storage.

    I did not realize that the Nazis had built such an extensive set of fortifications in Holland as part of the Atlantic wall.

  • @MrOrmesby
    @MrOrmesby Před 4 lety +1

    Many of these defensive structures still exist today for a very simple reason, the economic cost of their demolition. These structures are built of reinforced concrete, some of which are metres thick. They were actually built in a manner that made it difficult for them to be destroyed. The cost of demolition is so high that it is guaranteed that many of them will still exist when your grandchildren are your age.

    Not sure , but i think it was the Canadians who had to deal with most of these monster structures , they were the left flank all the way up from Normandy , we Americans and Brits were in the middle, I think...not sure , but my god, those things are huge..

    stationed out in Alameda, Ca 73-76 on the east side of the Golden State Bridge, they did have the gun in-placements from WW2. its a state park now. and looks like crap. kids destructive ones, came in and stole a lot of things and the army corps used demolition to take out the bunker that held all the ammo and other items. then bulldozed it over. Its a shame. they use to have two 21inch gun emplacements there and two silo's.. They did a scifi movie in some of the passage ways leading down to the bridge.

      I'd say most of them. As a rule of thumb, the ones with a rounded edges on the cover are German era 'Atlantik Wal' bunkers. The square ones with the sharp edges and angled entrances are Dutch WW1 era. Most shown here are from the ring fortifications around Amsterdam which extended westward to Spaarndam and even IJmuiden where the video showed a glimpse of the 'Forten Eiland' or 'Fort Eiland' in the middle of the harbour entrance of IJmuiden.

    In Deutschland werden solche Bunker zu Wohnhäusern umgebaut. Mit Diamantkabel werden Ausschnitte für Fenster reingesägt. Auf so einen Bunker am Atlantik noch schönes Edelstahl Geländer oben drauf und Holzboden, fertig ist die Terrasse. Daraus könnte man sich ein hübsches Ferienhaus machen. Kann man solche Bunker billig kaufen ? Ob die da rumgammeln oder jemand macht was hübsches daraus ?
