  • We disassemble an Asus Republic of Gamers G551J gaming laptop, clean out the CPU fan, explain the components, change the hard drive, download and install Windows 10 and run a benchmark. We then remove the new spinning disk and replace it with a Kingston V200 SATA SSD, install Windows 10 and run another set of benchmarks.

This is Brilliant, Thank you so much! I bought this laptop in 2014 and it's still running strong, I upgraded to SSD and RAM to 16GB following this video and now the performance is through the roof. In 2020 this laptop can still play AAA games on low to medium graphics!!

Great video! I recently bought a used but fully working Asus ROG G551JM and it came with 16Gb DDR3 1600MHz RAM, and i7 4710HQ i7, 1Tb hdd. I immediately removed the hdd and put my Intel S3610 1.2Tb 2,5" ssd in it. This laptop only cost me 100€. And the ssd i bought in 2020 for 100€ as well and that ssd were barely even used so like new and it still has 100% health.

Nice video! I did some cleaning on my laptop today and found that ssd slot too, and i did some research, here's what i've found, hope it helps
So, that slot is exclusively there to put a 24gb msata mini FOR CACHE in case your computer came with an HDD instead of an SSD, if that's the case, then probably the laptop will have that SSD slot populated with the msata mini drive mentioned above from factory
IF you have the version that came with a 256gb ssd drive, there's no point of using a cache ssd mini, so that slot comes empty (my case)
In short: If you have a 2.5 ssd then your only upgrade option is get a higher capacity/speed one, if you have a HDD you better upgrade it to an ssd.

I have the same laptop without any SSD, and I would like to add a NVMe SSD since it's much faster than SATA. Could you please let me know if the SSD slot is a 2280 or 2242? I don't think it is compatible with M.2. Is it?

    URTechDotCa:
I have the same Asus ROG G551 (GL551VW-DS71) and in the 4:55 minute, it looks the SSD slot perfectly. When I bought the laptop, I bought it with just 1 tb HDD 7200 rpm and I need to upgrade, so here are my questions:
What ssd to buy? Cause I know the differences between Sata I, II and III (normally with 2,5'' format or M.2 or mSATA) and M.2 (Sata too, or NVME format), because in the image showing up there, there is a mSATA I think, and I REALLY want to know if I replace the HDD (with and 2,5'' SSD SATA format, less speed than NVME) or add a SSD in the slot (and which SSD? mSATA or M.2)
Is this laptop support NVME in this SSD slot?
Hoping that you giving me the answer, please
    Greetings!
