    It's hard to describe what this game was like as a kid. It seemed legendary, (pun intended) magical, ethereal, and filled with secrets. And the Zelda team does that over and over again.

    I got to play the first 2 Zelda games upon release, and though really young, I loved them both - especially the original. But this one changed everything and I hold it in the highest regard. While I love OoT and have it as one the best games of all time, A Link to the Past is #1 on my list. I don't just mean in the series, but of all games. It got everything right and did all the things it set out to do, perfectly. This and Chrono Trigger accomplished that and very, very few games can say that. Plus, both have stood the test of time quite well and you don't have to rely on the 3DS for the definitive, most bug-free version. It's just difficult, impossible really, to reset the reference level for those who did not experience it during the time it was released.
    OoT was and still is phenomenal; a big, brave, ambitious, memorable, and timeless step into the 3D world, but Majora's Mask was an arguably better made game, though I prefer the former. It's the main reason why I always have this one ahead of it.
    Great video btw!

      Thanks for sharing! I was not around to play it at release so I always love hearing from people who were. Even playing it today, it’s impossible to ignore how incredibly rock solid it’s design is and how influential it was on the industry

    I really like your style of videos. I like how you don't do a traditional retrospective, you instead do a kind of summary with commentary. I adore and live by the zelda series. I'm old so I've been there since the beginning. I still remember playing the original on my nes. I had no idea wtf was going on. I didn't own it so i didnt have the manual. Then when i found my way through the first labyrinth i had this feeling of excitement accomplishment. Like i now knew what i was supposed to do. It wasnt just survive until you reach the rightmost side if the level like so many nes games. It made you think and find your way through it. Then i put it out of my head.
    The first time i beat ALTTP I stared at the ending credits. Taking in all the music akd atmosphere. Watching the clouds roll by in the dark world as that amazing music played. Something in me clicked. From then on Zelda was my obsession and now I'm 44 and still have that feeling

      Thank you! I’m so glad you are enjoying my videos! That must be a really special memory of the first time Zelda clicked for you. I’m jealous that you’ve got to experience the series all the way through from the beginning, I’m younger and wasn’t even born when the first few games released. I loved going back and playing them of course but it’s not the same as playing when they were fresh and mysterious.

    Just completed my first 000 games played run tonight. My third play through this week. Didn’t play it much as a kid but it’s grown on me every time I beat it. Odd it’s a hidden gem for me considering its legacy. It’s up there with the best retro games I’ve played.

    I had such a hard time beating the boss of the Palace of Darkness, that I never unlocked the map markers for the dark world dungeons until after I already knew where they all were. It definitely elevated the game for me, I think.
    Also, I think that implementing world switching in the dungeons might have been good for one dungeon, but doing it excessively might have damaged the level design- a good addition to the Tower of Hera+Ganon's Tower, but I don't think I'd put it elsewhere. I also think that adding a "push" to correct warping could break the game, hard.

    • @AustinAshworth
      @AustinAshworth Před rokem +1

      Yeah I don’t need the light/dark world swapping in every dungeon, but it’s crazy to me that you have this awesome mechanic that the over world is designed around but is never used even once in the dungeons. I agree that the push correction to warping would be really tough to get right but I think it could make the mechanic a lot less frustrating if implemented.

    I used to not like this game that much and preferred oot. But a few years ago I gave this one another go and ended up liking it a lot. I think I put it over oot now tbh. oot added a lot to the series but I like that due to the 2D sprites you had to use your imagination a lot more, and that's what I love about 2D games. When looking at the title screen's backround, seeing those beautiful mountains and lake in the backround, is only giving me a taste of what the rest of the world looks like. The rest is up to me to fill in my head while playing.
    The final fight against Ganon is now one of my favorite boss battles of all time. oot had a great atmosphere for the final boss but was too easy. Ganon in ALTTP hits different. Not only is it challenging but so damn epic at the same time and I'll admit, the ending had me welling up when Link touched the triforce and turned everything back to normal.

      Thanks for sharing! LttP truly is a timeless, near perfect game. The clean sprite work is certainly much more pleasing on the eyes than the early polygonal OoT. I do still prefer OoT but I don’t have the most vivid imagination either so I can see how LttP might speak more to you if you can really visualize the world its depicting

    This was a nice watch. I'm surprised you didn't cover the change in magic from Zelda 2 to ALTTP - I think it maybe says something about the game that so few people feel the need to comment on the spell medallions ever, ahaha.

    • @AustinAshworth
      @AustinAshworth Před 3 lety +1

      Thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Yeah the medallions really don’t add much at all to the gameplay for me - if they weren’t required to open up some of the dungeons I could easily go the entire game and never use them.

    the meagre story makes this game far more archetypal---i filled in a lot of blanks with my own imagination and it made the game so much more epic. the later titles that have everything spelled out seem much smaller/less epic.

      I for one would have loved more plot/story in LttP. I played this for the first time last Christmas and towards the end It felt a bit bland rescuing the 6th nameless maiden who gives you another text based history lesson. Other than that and being a bit cryptic sometimes, Lttp was good, not great, but certainly a major step forward. Link's Awakening then hit the sweet spot for me, albeit to some degree the remake might have given this game a slight push.
