I'd invest in a moisture trap, just for caution. I think most full-sized compressors pool moisture in the bottom of the tank, but it only takes a really humid day to ruin a paint job.
Additionally I suggest a street elbow and ball valve to drain a tank when applicable. A dry tank will push less water into the pipes and will last longer. Your comment is great!
@@chrisholschbach6168 All the pancake and up compressors have a drain valve on the bottom of the tanks to drain water.
How I have mine setup in a shed is on the top floor I put the same exact compressor (to cut back on noise),I then ran about 10' of 3/8 hose (which is the line these compressors normally use) down through the floor to a a dryer/filter out of the way about 1' off the floor and to manifold about 2-5' off the floor behind my work area where then my brush hose connects.
The dryers/filters need to be lower and as far away from the compressor as you can get so as it can be as cool as possible for it to remove as much moisture as possible is the reason it's the lowest item in the system.....water runs downhill.
I also wired in a light switch at my work area to turn the outlet on/off that the compressor is plugged into,so all I have to do is flick the light switch and the compressor starts.
BTW,HF has probably the best hose for the buck, the orange PVC hose. The rubber hoses degrade from heat and ozone and crack/split and then blow...and also cost more. It comes in 25-50-100' lengths and I used about 10' of an old one I have had for about 25-30yrs working on cars, trucks, equipment,ATV's,etc.
Haha!! "Here's a spoon!!" 🤣
And then, "Full grown adult compressor"
Love your humor @Rex!!
My grandparents just gave me one of the pancake air compressors and regifted an unopened airbrush to me! This was the perfect video for me thanks a ton. Can’t wait to start painting my kits for the first time
i brought a compressor with a tank cheap online and the only gripe I have is the noise.. so I bore some holes, sound proofed and mitigated the vibration inside a nearby unused cabinet in my hobby room and somehow worked to the point that no one can hear when I use it to paint.. the channel has really inspired me to find and DIY a lot of solutions to potential setback encountered in this hobby.. thanks!
I saw that RIDGID compressor at HD a few days ago. Comes with lifetime warranty. The obvious advantage to the RIDGID is also useful for pressure washing, bead blasting, spray gun, etc. Liked!
You're gonna want a 40G or better if you're painting and blasting big jobs like full size cars. Pancakes are great for construction sites nail guns, brads, etc. It can be done, but that's a lot of work on a small oil less compressor.
@@tadracket448 I was gonna say the same - possibly an air gun for dusting too but basically if the tool has a spinning part in it volume (tank size) is king.
Such an ingenious idea. I have never thought about an industrial compressor for a hobby, but now that I've seen it in action, it gives me some ideas. Excellent.
I'm just getting into air brushing for models so this info is very helpful while trying to get everything set up. Thanks!!
I thought about using my old traditional air compressor but once I found your videos, I picked up a small one recommended by you and I love it. Much easier and quiet.
Oh for sure, way more convenient and quiet
Super excited you did this with the larger compressor and HPLV spray gun looking forward to seeing what you do after you have practiced. I'm fairly new to airbrushing and I have really enjoyed your videos. Thank you
I have been using a similiar setup to this for a while now, works great. Only difference is that I have a moisture trap added to the line. Thanks for your great content!!
Thanks! That was going to be my question. Airbrush compressors have one built in sometimes. So, I'd think having a moisture trap attached to the hose would be a good idea.
Another great video and perfect timing for me! This week I was getting ready to hook up my Father’s day gift (an Iwata Neo) to my 3 gallon compressor and start learning how to airbrush models and miniatures. Those kits you’re giving away would be great starters! Thanks for all the info and sharing your expertise…I’m learning a ton. 👏🏼👏🏼
Really appreciate all the alternative tools and products you show off! Really helps others to be aware of all the methods out there that might be easier to attain. Great Video!
Having a spare pancake compressor is extremely helpful in general. It's good to know I won't be stranded if my normal compressor dies mid-painting lol
Thanks so much. this is exactly the video I was looking for. I am just getting back into model building after many years away. I have a compressor and just couldn't justify the expense of a compressor for an airbrush. I have been binge watching your videos. thanks again.
Another great video! I bought a Mr hobby airbrush thanks to you and I can't wait to start painting some kits!
Thanks for all of your advice. Definitely be trying your paints, as I am restricted to hand brushing.
And here I thought getting into airbrushing would have been expensive and niche for my kits, but now I see there are more options I think I might get into it sooner.
Thanks for the review. I started with a Harbor Freight pancake compressor but my wife did not like the noise. Now I use it in the garage. Had not thought of using a regular spray gun on model kits. I'll have to give that a try.
I bought one at Home Depot when I worked there. Got a great deal! It sat in my garage for years, until I got back into the hobby. Works great but I replaced the plastic hose with a rubber one. Problem with it (as you’ve mentioned) is that it’s very noisy. I love it though! Thanks for sharing. Happy days and model on! 😎🇨🇦
I am running a industrial style air compressor with a aluminum tank. Just for anybody who is interested in going this route I would advise you go with the aluminum tank for the simple reason of being non corrosive the steel counterparts are at risk of rusting if the user doesn’t remember to empty the tank of water condensation which you DO NOT want to have the steel tank possibly explode over time. So aluminum with a relief valve is much safer. You will also need a moisture trap otherwise you will have water running in your hose and ruin your paint. Be aware of the thread types when conversations are being made. Most compressors are made in china and will have a “BSP” thread type and you may have to use fittings with a “NPT” thread type which is what is the standard in America. Yeah that’s our freedom of the oppression which is known as “METRIC SYSTEM.” And finally make sure to use Teflon tape to make your fittings leak proof. I have done it and it’s not too expensive or hard to make a compressor airbrush ready. Hopefully that will help you all out good luck and happy 4th to my fellow Americans.
I wondered about this when I started to prepare to paint and ended up going with a Master cool running compressor. Really appreciate you showing that there are different ways of accomplishing things.
You make some of the most useful videos for learning to use an airbrush and new paint brands, you've really helped me out!
I was debating getting a large compressor a while ago, but you made it clear it's not needed. Thanks for the info.
Awesome video as always! I've picked up a moisture trap for my big air compressor, just to be safe. I do have a smaller compressor for my airbrush, but when I finally get my larger booth built for my basement garage I figured I'd use the big compressor just because that's where it is. The convenience of having it close will make it handy and leave my smaller hobby grade one for times when I need something more portable.
I upgraded to a small dual tank compreser for my hobby room. Love it.. was talking about using my 2.5 hp 25 gal one I have in my workshop, but the Mrs said NO! Hahah
cant wait to get my first airbrush this week ^_^ so happy i got to learn from your videos
Thank you I have been wanting to switch to a full size air compressor and you answered a few questions for me. I love watching your videos and the unboxing of the new products you show us sir. I build car and truck models all the time and I have been wanting to build a Gundam model cause they look fun and challenging sir.
Thanks for the video, I used a regular compressor for a few years before going back to a hobby size. The only problems I had with it was the noise. I couldn't run it in my hobby area without waking up the wife or kids. It would also scare the shit out of me when it would kick on. I like the tip of turn it on else ware and then unplug it and bring it in the room.
Thanks for the great breakdown of how to get these compressors connected.
I set this up a couple years ago with a bostitch air nailer compressor and it works great. I leave the machine out in the garage and ran an air hose into my hobby room. I leave the regulator on the compressor at around 100 but I added a cheap regulator in the line next to my work bench so I can adjust it as needed.
I went through your link to grab one of the no-name Cool Tooty compressors, and I love it! Even great for fabric painting!
cant wait.., been drooling for that unicorn banshee for a min now. love your content..
Have a similar setup! Makes painting in longer sessions a lot more enjoyable
I’ll have to pick one up that compressor works phenomenal.
That black unicorn is badass!
Great video as usual. Thanks!
Great video as always. Nice alternative and can't wait to see how that sprays
Nice review Barbatos, Thanks again! Keep 'em coming!
Love your vids! Keep me comping, for sure I always look up if you've done a review before trying out new paints
Hey Rex, thanks very much. Your information on how to hook up a large compressor was very timely for me. I have a DeWalt pancake compressor I use with my brad nailer. Now I will be able to use it with my airbrush. All the best. Hope you get the AC back soon.
Got my first airbrush the other day, and was hoping to use it with my garage air compressor, perfect timing on the video!
Great video, I recently figured this out for my own setup!
Thank you for this video! I have been considering trying to hookup an airbrush like this, great to see how it's done!
Found your video for painting models because my son wanted to start painting and building Gundams. I hope I am not to late for an entry chance for this Gundam. He'd be so stoked.
I bought the Harbor Freight airbrush compressor combo after seeing your review. I have since been using me 25 gallon 5 HP Craftsman compressor, adapted down to fit my airbrush water trap/regulator. I love this setup as I can fill the compressor tank to 125 psi, but dial it down to 40 psi to my water trap/regulator, where I dial in my final working pressure. I also have a 7 gallon portable air tank I can air up to 125 PSI if I need to be mobile. Of course, I do all of my airbrushing in my garage, for now.
Thank you for the demo. Appreciate your time and efforts.
This helps. I have a pancake compressor almost identical to the one you used for my nail guns. I've been watching your channel for the reviews because I to get an air brush for painting small models.
I have an uncle that helped pay for college in the late 70’s and early 80’s by airbrush art on the sides of shag vans and he used a 50 gallon paint shop compressor. So this should work like a breeze.
Always like your videos. Very informative and easy to follow. Stay cool in this heat!!
Really have been enjoying the channel. Just getting back into building models again.
Awesome thanks for the info. I have the exact same compressor and have been wanting to use it for painting.
I've been wanting to get into airbrushing, so this is super helpful!
Love to watch your videos. I haven't ever gotten into airbrush but I have several customers that are interested in getting started. I have enjoyed learning about airbrush in more detail and recommend that people checkout your videos to help them learn how to use airbrush items.
Thanks for your review! I'm looking forward to your review of Harbor Freight compressor ... I just purchased a Fortress 2-gallon ultra quiet compressor for air brushing. All the best ...
Nice option. Very informative about all the fittings.
When I'm painting large scale bodies, I use a Devilbis touch up gun. This is a great tutorial on using these too.
I picked up a Harbor Freight air brush compressor kit a while back. Mine didn't have a pressure adjustment on it unlike some people said in the comments from a previous video. I switched over to my 60 gallon compressor with a fine tuned external pressure regulator that only goes up to 50 psi for my airbrush. Works great for me but I'm confined to using it outdoors in my garage.
Need to wrap my head around my model compressor before diving into this world! Looking forward to the nipper comparison next!
Nice test. I can see where the larger spray gun could be really useful when painting model cars. Thanks for sharing.
Great video! Have been using a Briggs & Stratton 3 gallon compressor, and like you said, fill it up first, then spray once its filled.
great video, been using a larger compressor for a while, many great uses
I've been watching your videos lately and I am learning tons of good information! Specially the Vallejo air improver! No splatter!
Great video again, my set up is the same but with a smaller 1 gallon compressor in the garage comes on more than I like but gets the job done!!!
We've had a 2 gallon setting in the box for years. I just want to use for crafting tumblers. I was gonna buyer a kit but then realized a larger compressor should also work. Thx for the info.
Such a great video and always always appreciate just how much great useful real world information you give even whether good or bad. Thank you very much and please keep em coming. Everyone keep yourselves and love ones safe and healthy and remember to SMILE it's a hobby and it's suppose to be FUN.
Another great video. I can't wait to hear how the model cars turn out using the automotive style airbrush.
I bought my airbrush a few years ago, planning to use the exact same Rigid compressor you used, but got frustrated with trying to make the necessary adaptations and gave up. I recently got it figured out though! I bought a water trap with a regulator and had a very hard time getting the fittings right. I suspect that it had the metric threads which almost but not quite fit the standard ones. I finally made it work by using the 1/4 to 1/8" adapters it came with, then adapting from there.
I left the compressor regulator maxed out, since I use it for nailguns as well, and ran an 8' hose which I had to my new reg/trap at my bench.
Like you said, once it's full it lasts a long time, but theres no way you'll get a week out of it! I fill it up during each day I'm going to be using it and shut it off and it easily lasts an evening.
Pro tip: I work as a home remodeler and we have an ironclad rule of shutting off AND unplugging compressors EVERY night. If you have even a small air leak, that compressor may come on in the middle of the night and scare the begeezus out of the residents. (I know of two times in which it happened!)
Great Video! I have a regulator/moisture-seperator screwed into the table and connect my airbrush to that. It allows me to regulate pressure right where I spray and put my 6gal compressor wherever I want.
I have a Kolbalt compressor with a 50 foot hose in my garage so this is something to consider, thank you for this video.
Another great video! And it sounds like you have some wonderful topics coming up.
I have been planing to use my big compressor for airbrushing, this video came just in time
I use this same compressor in the garage to fill up a portable holding tank I got from Harbor Freight. It lasts a long time before a refill. I bring the holding tank into the hobby room and run a curly hose off the holding tank to my bench-side pressure regulator and water trap, then connect the airbrush hose to the regulator. The water trap is essential if you paint wherever the humidity is high. I use quick connects on everything so I don't have to carry hoses with me when I go to the garage for a refill every couple of days. I wouldn't change this set-up except if I were building a new house. Then I would plumb in compressed air and vacuum lines directly inside the walls from the garage to the hobby room.
I love the idea you had to use spoons to show the paint....works perfect....✌👍‼‼
Oh very cool! Can't wait to try and setup a system one day
Thank you for a great video. I’ve been struggling with adapting my airbrush to my old Craftsman compressor. My airbrush uses a British BSP thread. Just like you, I purchased an assortment of adapters from Ebay or Amazon. That did the trick for me. Happy 4th of July!
What a neat idea to try using a heavy duty airbrush and compressor for plastic models! Also thanks for being clever with managing those giveaway scam bots, your very smart about it and we appreciate it a lot!
Thanks for showing how to hook up the airbrush on the larger compressors.
Nice setup video, thanks for posting it. I've been thinking about getting a larger, industrial style compressor if I moved to a place where I could set one up and route the air to my hobby room. I'll keep this video in mind if I get the chance to do it!
Found this very helpful. Haven't invested in a compressor yet, still using canned air for now.
Man! I'm totally looking forward to seeing you paint some auto kits! Gonna be super cool and interesting to see what you do with them.
Great info! Thanks and hope things cool off for you.
Glad to know that i can just pop into a big box store and grab bigger compressor if mine dies. great contender and keep it up
I picked up a full sized compressor 2nd hand for air tools. I'd planned to get a spray gun for it as well for larger projects so this is very useful info. My airbrush compressor is a Master Airbrush TC-96T. The larger tank on it is handy, and even when it's running it's pretty quiet.
Always wondered how to do this, thanks a ton!
Got myself some glass files and the Iwata eclipse. Your reviews are helpful, thank you.
Thank you, I'm doing my best
I put the same disconnect on all of my airbrushes. It’s a bit of a headache getting the right adapter fittings, but once you do and if you use the same quick connect, it gets pretty simple. I also use a small inline moisture filter at the airbrush, between the quick connect and the airbrush. It helps me hold the airbrush because my hands don’t always do what I ask them to. I use a 2 gallon ultra quiet compressor. I spray my 2k clear on my car models and aluminum panel paintings, with a hvlp gun.
Your A/C went out? I got that one beat! I had a family of raccoons get into my duct work last week - a mama and 2 babies. They're gone now, but it was annoying. They sound like dolphins.
I've had a cheap Harbor Freight compressor for about 15 years, and it still works fine. I use it for my pressure pot. I got an airbrush compressor with a tank, because they're so much quieter. Learned a lot about airbrushing from your channel. Thanks!
You always show the best stuff.
Happy Fourth of July to you also. Definitely informative video. Still want to try one of the trigger style airbrushes. Thanks for another great video
Great video , always appreciate the new knowledge!
I came here for the information about the compressor but here i am now rolling the dice on that sweet gundam kit give away
Great video!
I ran a 100’ hose from my garage compressor up through my attic into the room with my paint booth. I’m using the Makita “silent” 2gal. It’s great not having to hear the compressor in the room with me. I mainly did this so I could paint at night when my kids are asleep.
Congratulations you've been picked as the winner. I will also announce this in the next video. Please contact me using my email address in the description
@@barbatosrex9473 Noooooo WAAAAAY. Emailing now
I love the reviews that you do. I am looking forward to getting into my house and starting model building again I lost everything and have so much to get again.
This was entertaining for sure.. even though your cooking over there.. youre still witty and cracking jokes lol!!:) hope your air gets fixed soon man… thank you for still making a vid for us.. i look forward to it!:) i kinda want a real car airbrush now lol!!! Im ready for the car kit painting vids.. thats what im looking forward too!!:) happy 4 th buddy!!!
Thanks, happy 4th to you too
Awesome video, I built a silent compressor using a refrigerator compressor pump mounted onto a 1 gallon tank.
This is a great review and I appreciate the video. Thank you.
For me personally I live by the the ideas of "Buy it for life" and "you get what you pay for". Being in Alaska I have to put my compressor in my hobby room. Because of that I found the best indoor compressor with the best warranty and lifespan. The Silentaire 20-A is a expensive compressor but worth it in every way. When they say its silent they mean just that. We have a couple of guys around here that have them as well. Here is some anecdotal evidence about the lifespan of it. One of the guys here who has one is a big time model builder, his has been running hassle free for 10 years so far.
Glad to know I can use my full size compressor. I just need to get an air brush so I can start painting!
Thanks for the video, enjoy your 4th B-Rex!
You gotta get the harbor freight fortress super quiet. It sits by my feet while I paint
140 bucks out the door. It also helps to use full size filters, it's very humid where I'm at but thanks to the filter the air comes out very dry.
When using a full-sized compressor for painting, especially if you're using a bigger gun or painting a lot of stuff, it's a good idea to have an inline dryer and/or water trap. I have a big 26 gallon "quiet" compressor that I use for everything from my tiny airbrushes to my pneumatic tools, and everything runs through a desiccant dryer/trap/regulator combo.
