  • Here's what I came up with to allow for a large opening when needed without having a single large, sag-prone gate

    I just dug out my 10' 4x6 post that I had buried 3 feet in concrete. I was trying to figure out how to do this instead of just resetting the post. Great job. I have to go find some drill pipe now. Thumbs up.

      Thanks Chad, hope you can find some...there's lots around my part of the country due to the oilfield activity here. If there's not any to be found in your area steel dealers/suppliers should also have some, just a lot more expensive to buy new. Don't know if they'll be willing to cut and sell you 2.5 or 3 feet (instead of a whole section), but worth checking if you can't find any used

    Great Video, You said you are not a pro but its way better than what most pro can do. I wish you had recorded the process. I am looking to do something like this. Thanks

    Nice idea! I have a similar utility trailer that I need to store in my backyard and need to convert my single gate to a double. This video gave me some good ideas.

    Great idea. I guess you find a pipe bigger than the one holding up the mini gate. I have a very similar size post position 102" wide. I don't plan on pulling vehicles in and out often but this would be great for those occasions.

    It looks amazing! Can you please take a closer look/camera to the front of the gate and demonstrate someone coming in? Thxs!

    Thanks for posting. Great idea and this worked for application too. Any reason that your gate braces are oriented opposite of where the gate opens (where the latches are to the inside)? In other words, why are the braces pulling the hinge side upward instead of the latch side? Seems that you want to pull the gate upwards so that it won't sag.

    • @workingdad
      @workingdad  Před 3 lety

      on the braces, I don't know that I know which way is better-compression from top outer corner to bottom hinge, or tension from top hinge to bottom outer corner? I figured compression is stronger, but not sure it will matter much either way, I think both would work and I'm not OCD enough to always do them the same, so long as any sitting side by side look the same. kinda curious what other people think or have seen after install

    Mate - wondering how this sleeved idea has gone over time? I would suspect that the sleeve and post might stick with rust and water ingress? What about the bolt with wing-nut is this still workable or does it tend to seize? I need to do something very similar at my place. Double gate, with removable gate post. 1 predominantly pedestrian gate and 1 wider gate which in conjunction will allow a vehicle though.

      I was def worried about rusting in place..I greased it heavily with bearing grease. we moved 3 years ago so I don't know how it's doing now, but I've since done the same at our new place and nothing stuck yet. I am in a pretty dry climate though, so I'm sure that helps

    What did you put the pipe into. I was looking at Home Depot and couldn’t find anything flush?

    I agree. GREAT IDEA! I was wondering where you found the metal for your braces. What type of store sells it.

    • @workingdad
      @workingdad  Před 6 lety

      the diagonal braces on the gates, and all the rest of the hardware the local fence supply store down near me sells, bought it all from them. the big box stores sell most of all of this stuff too, but they are higher price at least in my area

    Did you do any of the corner brackets for the chain-link? Curious of how you did it, if you had done it

    • @workingdad
      @workingdad  Před 2 lety

      luckily I don't have any chain link fence to deal with. it does last forever, but wood is easy to work with

    What did you use as the receptacle for the 2-3/8" galvanized post?

    • @workingdad
      @workingdad  Před 7 lety +2

      sorry if I failed to mention that part...2.5 inch schedule 40 pipe. I bought some used oilfield drill pipe because it's cheaper than new pipe and we're in an oilfield heavy area, so there are lots of used pipe yards and they sell by the foot. 2 and 3/8 is 2.375 OD on the fence post and ID on 2.5 schedule 40 is 2.46, so pretty good fit without being too tight
