- In this English lesson I'll help you learn the English phrases you would use to give an excuse for being late for work or school. We're all late at some point in our lives. Sometimes it is something within our control, and sometimes it's something outside of our control.
Either way, as an English learner, it's a good idea to learn how to give an excuse and reason for being late. In this lesson I'll talk about the 10 most common reasons for being late, and what you would say if you were in that situation.

I'm just curious. Which of these excuses would be considered reasonable in Canada? For me, severe weather, incidents and road works without warnings can be considered not the employees fault.

Hi Bob. I underwent nearly all the circumstances you described. Except (1:57) about the alarm clock because I was so tired and sleeping like a rock that I simply cannot hear it going off. When it comes to forgetting, (2:53) I think using a checklist before going to work might be useful.

In my last school years I used to milk our cows with my dad before I went to school.
So sometimes I was late... 😒
My excuses were : milkfever cow, sick cow,
a cow stuck in a stall , milking maschine broken down or the cops pulled me over to see the permit for the super shortcut road🙁

Hey Bob, but to sleep in is totally different from to oversleep, isn't it? I mean when you sleep in, you do it on purpose. Or at least this is what I was taught. Have a good one and be careful not to oversleep next morning! (accidently staying late in bed). 💤💤

Hi Bob! "My alarm didn't go off" sounds like the opposite from what it should say from your description. When my alarm isn't going "off", it rings and rings and doesn't let me sleep.
