  • Debussy's "La Cathédrale Engloutie" (variously translated as 'The Sunken Cathedral,' 'The Engulfed Cathedral' and 'The Submerged Cathedral') is a piano prelude depicting an old Breton myth in which the Cathedral of Ys rises up from the sea, its priests chanting, its bells ringing and its organ playing, before sinking down into the ocean once more. The best-known orchestral transcription was made by Leopold Stokowski but here we see a rare performance of Sir Henry Wood's lavish and spectacular arrangement. It was given by the BBC Concert Orchestra under the baton of Bramwell Tovey, during the 2019 Proms season in London's Royal Albert Hall, in a programme that marked Sir Henry's 150th birthday.
Note that three other Wood arrangements from that concert are also here on CZcams ...

R.I.P. Sir Bramwell Tovey (1953-2022). Here's a vivid example of the mastery and sure handed skill from that great man. He did also quite well in various British repertoire, such as Elgar or RVW. This Debussy simply is exceptional - what a dark beauty, what a sound !

Missed the boat on more bells, less drum rolls. Had moments of greatness but fail to capture it at least for me.

I prefer the Stokowski orchestration - it’s far more respectful of Debussy’s original concept.

Very beautiful arrangement. It sounds like Respighi. Thus i can understand why Debussy was one of the most influencer composer of history.

The orchestration is big and bold, but the tempo here is too slow, it kills the majesty and awe of the piece and makes it plodding and dull. The Stokowski arrangement keeps things building up and moving forward, this is heavy and weighs it all down.
