5 Things I LOVE about the Harley Iron 883 Sportster

  • Owned the Harley Iron 883 for about a year and almost 3,000 miles, so figured I'd do a "TOP 5" things I loved about the bike!
1.) The LOOKS - This bike's a looker! Even bone stock, it looks good, but the potential is just HUGE! You can take it in so many directions in terms of modifications and make it your own. The smaller frame, sleek profile, flat black paint job with a splash of chrome accents had me hooked. It felt and looked sporty to me, which makes sense as it's called a "Sportster."
2.) Affordability! - I always thought Harley's were crazy expensive bikes. Some of them are, but the Sportsters are very affordable! They're a nice entry level and gate into the world of Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Also, insurance is really cheap on them as well!
3.) Aftermarket Options - There are SO MANY aftermarket options for modifying this bike, it's crazy! There's entire companies that operate solely on making aftermarket parts / modifications or Sportsters, and an incredibly community of Sportster lovers that support it. From LED tail lights to Chin spoilers, Big bore kits to an endless number of exhaust options, the Harley Sportster is an awesome foundation to build and customize an incredible bike.
4.) Fitment (it fit me well) - I'm 5'10" tall. I sat on a number of Harley's before deciding on the Sportster, and found that there's a lot of the bikes that I'm just not comfortable on. 5'10" is an average height I've been told, but for some reason, forward controls and higher bars just didn't set right with me. I love the fact that the Iron 883 had mid controls and lower bars. I lowered the bars even more, not because of fitment, but b/c I loved the look and feel of drags (but that goes in reason #3!)
5.) Great Introductory Cruiser! - When I was growing up, when I heard "Harley," I always thought of big loud bikes like Street Glides or Road Kings. Baggers! (I'm not a huge fan of baggers, but I can understand their application.) When I discovered there was a smaller sportier Harley that looked great, was affordable, as well as small and nimble, it peaked my interest. With an 883 engine, I remember pulling off the lot for the first time and jumping onto a main road, and felt like I was going the speed of sound at 40mph! I'd ridden dirt bikes and ATVs growing up, but this was a different experience. The 883 was more than enough for me to start out on, and it was a great introductory cruiser into the world of Harley and cruisers. I slowly grew into the bike, becoming more confident and comfortable in my riding abilities, and ended up trading it in for a Low Rider S, which has the same look and feel of a Sportster, just on steroids! (110 cubic inch monster, rawr.)
Those are the 5 things I loved about my Harley Iron 883! Of course there were more, but those things stood out and influenced my opinion on the bike the most I think.
I was sad to see it go, but know that it definitely won't be the last Sportster I own! The Sportster line is seriously fun, affordable, they looks great, and they're built on a solid platform with the Evo engine (Blockhead!)
I hope you all enjoyed the video! As always, thanks for tuning in! Be sure to Like / Comment / Subscribe!
Till next time, you all ride safe out there, & stay vigilant!

It's strange that this is one of the best looking, if not the best looking bike that Harley makes and it's their cheapest bike. It looks like a motorcycle should look. Not like a minivan bagger and not like an insect or sportbike. It's just badass looking.

As a former Sporster owner, ( had to stop riding for health reasons) I loved my then-new '94 883. I lowered it mounted the 3.2 gals. tank custom painted from HD, track bars, Python tapered ends, polished aluminum levers, lay dow plate mount, SS brake lines, custom mirrors, and the widest Avons that would fit my bike (180mm rear with a tire mated front tire. Polished billet low profile gas cap and head bolt covers. It was black, as well. Did all of the work myself.
So, in other words, your 883 is perfection to me!

Keep up with the vlogs hope to see more mods on your Low Rider S keep safe and have a blast :)

Good Video Blockhead! It looked like you were correcting yourself about the big bore kit size at the end though. You were correct about 1275cc. Hammer Performance is currently the only company that makes a 1275cc option for Sportsters. It is actually on my list of mods for my 1200 lol.

I get more compliments on my Harley Black Iron...than I can count!!!! Girls love it but, mainly dudes are like really trippin' on the look of the Iron 883cc. One guy even thought it was a Steve McQueen Bike....WWII Era, lol....... McQueen rode the TR6 in the Great Escape. Triumph Blacked out to look like a German Bike.
I test rode the 1200cc Sportster, but decided to keep my Iron. The 1200cc had way too much chrome, not enough Blacked out like the Iron. Also just wasn't as nimble as my Iron. I am totally happy with my Bike, gonna ride it for a while !.........Also, My decision to buy the Iron 883cc came from watching BlockHead videos !!!
Thanks dude for what you do, Harley should put you on the payroll... you're selling bikes and don't even realize it ! Thanks again !!! deuces \/ peace out !

Man, it’s a great bike to get people who maybe were not looking at Harley, into a Harley Davidson. That is exactly what happened to me. I was NOT looking for a Harley, especially as my first bike. But my wife, who is much smarter than me, got me to a local dealership and lo and behold, I now own a 2020 Iron 883!

First off, big fan from Canada. Solid vids. Love what you did to the Iron, and am now avidly following you, and the transition to your LRS. I'm looking to buy my first bike in 10 years (883 in 2007), and am torn between a sporty (for cost and availability primarily) and a street bob. I'm 6ft and have plenty of previous experience riding, so I'm leaning toward a SB, but, there are some amazing deals out there for XL's. My questions are, at 5"10, did you feel comfortable enough on the iron for commutes that could be 45min to1h long, daily? Do you regret buying the 883 rather than jumping onto a dyna right outta the gates? I'm not looking to race my ride, so performance isn't really a factor. I just want to cruise to wherever the fuck I want. Any experiences you can share would be great. Take care and thanks in advance.

For some reason I thought my 883 was a 2015 so I took it across 3 states three times this summer. It ran well just my shift pedal vibrated loose. My buddy reminded me he sold me a 2001 model. I wouldn't have never chanced it . I buy a lot of bikes. I'm taking it to Gatlinburg when when the leaves fall. Roll Tide

I really think this bike is underestimated too often...Sure, its smaller and not as powerfull as the larger Bikes from Harley but, that being said...It has plenty of power from a power to weight ratio! And its nimble. With pretty much unlimited mod options for astetics and power upgrades, id be totally satisfied with this bike even being a seasoned rider. I think the style you went for is sweet. Im going today to take a look at the 883 iron and just may end up coming home with one. lol. Really diggin the all black but think im leaning towards the Gray denim! A little contrast with the black and machined parts looks killer! Nice videos, Keep em coming! Sub'd. 👊

Some people buy a Sportster to get a Harley. I bought a Harley to get a Sportster. When people ask me what kind of bike I ride, I never use the word, "Harley". I simply say I ride a Sportster. Although I love Harley-Davidson's heritage and I respect the Big Twins of all years and models, I ONLY ever wanted a Sportster in the Harley line. My 2005 XL883 Standard scratches all my itches. I love the original looks and mine looks completely stock except for the seat which was uncomfortable and the base broke, so I replaced it with a Mustang. All of my changes are internal and they are for reliability and durability. It has enough speed for my style of riding, so I don't plan to upgrade it for performance.

Anyway, I like the sporty look and ergonomics of the street rod, ie better lean angle, more pickup n go etc. HOWEVER I also like the looks and sound of the iron 883 and all the customization available for it. I'm 6ft, have a bad back (damn Bain...but thats not gonna stop me). I guess what I am asking is which bike to get? Mostly going to be used on the weekends or in and out of traffic on main roads. Possibly some long distance riding, maxing out around 200 miles or so, but that wouldn't be often. Also I'm 41. A young 41. If there's anyone who owns both both bikes please let me know your opinion. Is the street rod really uncomfortable? Can you change the bars and pegs on it for comfortability? Will I get bored of an iron 883 faster than my street rod for upgrade purposes? Again if money was not an option I would definately go with a 2016 low rider s based on my research but that thing still sells for around 16-17k from my research. I like that the street rod doesn't look too sporty nor too much like a cruiser. Kind of in between, best of both worlds. But that iron is badass also!! I want them both!!! Decisions decions!! ALL opinions are welcome and appreciated. Sorry for the long post.

nice bike. it's good to see someone else who doesn't like big klunkers. I've driven an 800 suzuki for 20 years and have riden with bigger bikes . not fun to me . I live in Tampa and mainly only city driving anyway I ride a marauder and it's 440 lbs. very nimble . put a home made belt drive on it because I HATE, HATE ,HATE chains and sprockets. Never rode in Orlando ,but looks crazy. be safe , keep the shiny side up! ...... oops, you have a matte paint job. you know what I mean ! lol

Kevin Freist good on you for doing you're own thing man, but to say that you know why someone does something when you don't know them personally, is foolish. I have known several people, myself included, that started out on XLs and then wanted more, be it power, size or travel radius. Like you said, to each their own.

I love my Sportster, but i have to say that despite the weight and size, my Road Kind handles way better... at least for me... i found the combination of frame and suspension it's more balanced.... that being said, i cherish my Sporty, it's my baby...
