  • Cherishing Each Other: A Conversation with Tara Brach and Father Gregory Boyle
Many are familiar with the Dali Lama’s words “My religion is kindness.” In this conversation you will sense the gritty and real way that we struggling humans can learn to cherish one another. We talk about the relationship between boundaries and compassion; the unshakeable goodness at our core; how we belong to each other, and how judgments arise from delusion and blind us to the blessing of that belonging.
Father Greg Boyle is an American Catholic priest of the Jesuit order. He is the founder and director of Homeboy Industries, the world's largest gang intervention and rehabilitation program, author of several books, including Tattoos on the Heart; Barking to the Choir; and in 2023, The Whole Language: The Power of Extravagant Tenderness.
Father Greg’s life and work are a huge inspiration: he is dedicated to living from love and cultivating loving community with a marginalized population of ex inmates, gang members and their families. You can find out more about Father Greg and Homeboy Industries at: homeboyindustries.org/our-sto...

@@unme4728 Thank you though I personally wasnt traumatized in any way. Its just the corrupt and cruel institution the Catholic church is in my country (I'm from Poland) - e.g. the way it treats women and children, the way it meddles with politics. It has long forgotten the teachings of the Christ.

You took a bold step away from religion and fear and into finding pure love. As we grow and mature we realize that spirituality is not about organizations of control but about connecting with genuine hearts. ❤

Thank you both for this tough and beautiful conversation. We don't hear the word Cherish nearly enough. "Cherish with our sleeves rolled up", this is true resilience.
To see the suffering not the sinner. Truth being Loving without ever needing anything in return, loving No Matter What, Yes! This is the true way to freedom and to reformation. Thank you Father Boyle for your years of dedication.❤

Thank you for your talk; I absolutely agree. Unfortunately, it took me 89 years. If I had been born into a Buddhist instead of a Catholic family, it might have been faster. (Maybe.) It would be nice if we could nurture young people before they end up in jail. I read posts online by people who complain about young vandals misbehaving and not getting punished severely enough: "we should put them in jail and throw the keys away." In the next post they are complaining about their real estate taxes going up because schools have to be financed. I hope that growing knowledge about how childhood trauma affects behavior will change our guilt-punishment orientation. See research by Dr. Gabor Maté. Jesus allegedly said: "Father forgive them, for they know not what they do." I don't know if he really said that, but whoever came up with that line had a good idea. It's the only line we need. The Buddha said we suffer because we lose what we are attached to or don't get what we want. Well, last Sunday it occurred to me that Trump suffers because he really wants to be president, and I suffer, because I want my husband back (he died 13 years ago.) Slightly different desires, but the suffering is the same. Be well!

I will come back to this again & again. I feel the same in many ways but failed to protect myself because I didn't hold the multiple layers well, and I think to put yourself in a service role until all are healed is the only way to inhabit and apply the perspective. All these individuals will go through a for profit adversarial legal system that has to protect the public but also must change. I am looking for a solution from the "justice" system and am greatly disappointed as I hold this perspective of integrated belonging. It's very conflicting. All and all, what has been discussed here is the vision, the cutting edge and where we need to go.

Beautiful. Yes. This my experience too. 2 suggestions: saying "the poor " is making a division. And I see misogyny as something that can be addressed if it's identified. That's different from calling someone "a mysogynist." Misogyny is a sickness of us and our society and there's specific medicine for it. Basically the medicine you're talking about. Thanks.

I think "loving" is merely subduing one's ego. When one does that a feeling of good will, or respect, becomes a dominant emotion.

I'm trying to lose the good/bad concept for positive/negative or healthy/unhealthy. Sin is a crime against a Being but everyone suffers. I prefer the Taoist attitude toward suffering, though. Blame is worthless. Accountability brings reform.
